T Stands For - When One Project turns Into Another

For Thanksgiving dinner, I set the table with the fine china and Ma's sterling silver. It seems silly to have these beautiful pieces living behind glass doors waiting for a special occasion that never seems to come. Thus, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for the annual cleaning of the china hutch after the festivities were over.

Himself thought with the hutch emptied, the opportunity to try the sample of paint we bought last week, was too good to pass up. So after the hutch was emptied, and chairs, table, and rug moved, Himself vacced the floor, washed and painted the wall behind the hutch.

I actually joked that we should just paint around the hutch like the previous owner did when we moved in. The dining room/living room combo was painted a beige color. The only room that had been painted that didn't have a dozen different layers of wallpaper peeking through. We originally saw the house with the previous owner's hutch in place. When we stepped foot in the house, besides finding trash left all over the place, there was a giant turquoise rectangle where the hutch had been.

Because of Himself's bad knees, I got the job of painting the baseboard. The paint chosen was Benjamin Moore Ice Mist with an eggshell finish. My parents always used Benjamin Moore paint so that is what we use, too. The paint glides on and covers well with one coat. The downside of painting walls are the paint fumes. A few years ago, Moore came out with a low odor line of their paint called Natura. That is what we tried this time around. Same great texture and coverage and no nasty smell.

I also got to wash brush, roller, and the roller tray lining. That was a quick and easy clean up compared to washing the china and crystal by hand. (Though to be honest, Himself had offered to help dry the dishes, but it was easier for me to wash, dry, and arrange without giving instruction.) Besides, Himself wanted to watch the Patriots' game and deserved to watch it in peace.

China and crystal waiting for a turn in the sink.

Dining room back in order.
We probably should have painted the ceiling first, but can start with that when the big paint project happens after Christmas while Himself is on Winter break.

It's hard to tell in the bad lighting, but the new color is a huge improvement over the color on the wall which I've called White Trash. The last time the inside of the house was painted was 2001. The outside of the house needs to be painted, too. Shhh, don't tell Himself, but that's the project for his Summer break in August.

  1. Welcome to T day!! Nice teamwork gets things done without being over tiring. Lovely hutch and vintage tableware. Yes, a bit more to clean up and put away carefully but I so enjoy having those things about for special occasions-and i do my own washing, drying and putting away for the same reason:)Happy T day!

  2. So, so glad you joined us for T this week, CJ. I am like you. I need to wash my dishes and glass ware before I use it each year, even though I also put it away clean. Your lovely hutch is perfect for your beautiful dishes.

This is the first home I've ever had that didn't have a dishwasher. Sadly, neither Bleubeard or Squiggles will help. Seems they don't want their paws getting all sudsy. And I don't mind doing it, either.

Now I know what the color of most of my walls are: white trash. Love it!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful hutch, your painting endeavors, and your incredible china with us for T this Tuesday. What a wonderful first T post.

    1. I'm so glad I joined. And thanks for not chiding me for not having a beverage. The dollhouse does't have a built in dishwasher. Christmas about 15 years ago, we gave each other a portable dishwasher.

  3. I find myself never using my china and crystal, even for occasions like Thanksgiving when it would seem to be fitting. It does seem a shame to have it and not use it.... Moving furniture is why I've never re-painted lol Happy T Tuesday

    1. I was the same way. A few years ago, The Young One, a 20-something, remarked she had never eaten off the good china. That made me feel bad.

    1. I think I gave the wrong impression. We didn't paint an entire room. Just a small wall 7 1/2 ft high by 11 feet wide. Just to test the sample of paint we bought. The rest of the room will be painted during Himself's Winter Break.

  8. Its fun to pull out the fancy dishes and accessories and use them. Sometimes I think they are such a waste to have. It used to be the style that you had to get them when you got married, whether you wanted them or not. I was a not, but got them anyhow. I bet your table was gorgeous. Happy T day. Erika

  11. Love the new paint, love the china, and love the plans for inside and out...will the dollhouse be blue come summer?

    1. Most likely. I do like the wedgewood blue though now the house is looking more like old, worn, blue jeans. I also like the fact that we are the only blue house on the street for 3 miles.

  14. What beautiful china! It's good that you actually use it (for special occasions). I don't have special plates and glasses. I only have the one set. And they are plain white. I never got round to buying anything fancy.
    The paint job looks grand.
    Happy T-Day

    1. Ah, but the beauty of white plates is they can be dressed up or down with accessories. Flowers, candles, and linen napkins for special occasion. Good old paper napkins for every day. Nice meeting you.

  15. Hahaha...I can relate to the 'not painted behind the china cabinet' when you moved in! When we moved in here the previous owners left their entertainment center...we thought it was so kind of them even though it wasn't our style. When we replaced it we saw the reason they left it...the carpet underneath was a totally different color! Apparently the carpet layers didn't bother to move it when the laid the new carpeting! We have lived with it that way for fifteen years! LOL

  16. OMGosh i've been painting for three days!!! My color was blue called 'Something Borrowed' ... we used Valspar Signature high hiding paint and we loved it... no smell and it covered in one coat! Loved seeing all your china and crystal...I think cleaning out the brush and roller is the worst job ever!! lol Happy Belated T day! Hugs! deb
