Ductless Mini Split System

So, I've been asked about the mini split, what it is and what it looks like. The mini-split is a ductless air conditioner and heater. It's called a mini split because the compressor is split off from the main unit.

This is the wall unit. A 6 inch or so hole was cut into the wall to run wires and stuff outside.

This is what it looks like outside. Wires and stuff were then run up into the attic crawl space. We had 4 units installed. One in the living room/dining room/kitchen area and one in each bedroom. Each unit can run independently.

From the attic crawl space, wires and stuff were run outside and connected to the condenser or compressor.

This thing. So, that's what it looks like., and no more lifting heavy, air conditioner units to put in and then out of the windows. Himself is very happy about that.

  1. Nice. Besides not putting them in, I think those ac's block the windows. That's what we have. And then one of those rolling units for the first floor. A major pain to move around. I like your new units and I bet they are keeping you nice and cool.:) Hugs-Erika

    1. We used to have a low-profile window unit many years ago. Didn't block as much of the window. They don't seem to make the low-profile anymore

We have the rolling floor units, too. They take up so much floor space.

We'll be running a test on the new units today. We're waiting on the elecrical inspector. Hopefully, we'll get the go ahead to use in time for the return to humidity at the end of the week.

  2. Makes more sense than a whole house unit, and probably a lot cheaper. :)

    1. Coupled with the solar panels, we're hoping for cheap on the electric bill.

  3. That's a great idea, I like that they are all individually to control. We don't have any AC here, when it's hot it's hot! Hugs, Valerie

    1. I don't really mind the heat and humidity. It usually doesn't last more than a couple two or three days. But AC makes for a comfortable night's sleep.

  4. What a great way to add AC when you don't want to put in a whole house unit. I have a home in MO (where humidity is a bear) and I had to install window units because the age of the house prohibited whole house AC. They would have had to replace the lathe and plaster walls with sheet rock, tear out ceilings and cut into the second story floor. Your solution sounds incredibly cheaper and better. Great that you showed the entire system to us.

    1. Our heat is forced hot water by oil. so no ducts. No way could duct work be installed for central AC. This is a convenient alternative.

  5. Cool! No pun intended, well maybe:)
    Are they energy efficient?
Are you liking them so far?

    1. Love the pun. They are energy efficient. We've tested the units, but haven't gone live yet. There was a bit of a coolant leak so the installer is coming back on Wed. to see what happened. We're also waiting for the electrical inspector to check over the wiring to the service box.
