T Stands For Welcome Home

The trip to Pennsylvania to help the Eldest move into her apartment continues. We left the hotel at Wilkes-Barre (pronounced like Barry) at 7 AM. We still had 4 1/2 hrs to travel and needed to be at the apartment before 1 PM as The Eldest had contacted the cable company to hook up Internet service. She had decided she wouldn't bother with getting cable TV.  (This fact later seemed so odd to the landlord. I explained to him young people nowadays don't bother with television. They can get news and weather from apps on their phone, and for entertainment they watch Netflix, Hulu, or some other streaming service from a computer or phone.)

The landlord met her at the apartment, and gave her the key to her very own castle.

I had brought some snacks from home for the trip, Clif Bars ( from the Faq: CLIF BAR is a great-tasting energy bar made with a nutritious blend of organic rolled oats and wholesome ingredients for sustained energy) and water.

View from the front door into the apartment. Since the rugs had been shampooed a day or two before, the landlord left drop cloths down. The real estate agent who had helped find the apartment also had gotten The Eldest some used furniture. The furniture was free, but she would have to pay some fellas (only $60! )for moving the furniture. They would swing by later in the afternoon, so the landlord left the drop cloths, and he would pick them up when everything was moved in.

The first home improvement project was hanging a hook on the wall by the door for keys.

The furniture was delivered and brought in by a father and son team. The father was cranky, obviously didn't want to be doing this job. The son was very nice and polite. The furniture that was delivered was a sofa (pink roses, The Eldest's favorite color), a coffee table, end table, pea green ginger jar lamp, a brass lamp, an ugly lamp, a comfy brown chair, another chair with cushions that were stained, and seat cushions but no chair. The son was kind enough to ask The Eldest where she wanted this or that put. The father just wanted to dump stuff by the door.

Some of the furniture was some sort of wall unit hutch. There were 3 such pieces with tops and bottoms. Everything had been taken apart. So when I went to look at the units, there were brackets to hold the top to the bottom but no screws.

When the landlord came over to get his drop cloths, I asked him if he could tell me what kind of screws I needed to get to hold things together. I figured I could get screws at Walmart, and I had gotten The Eldest a tool set so this would be a first project. He said he would take care of it when he came to install a programmable thermostat a day or two later.

As we were moving boxes and bags into the apartment, some of the neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves. The elderly gentleman, 91 years old, who lives next door offered to take us out to dinner. He also told us he had just gotten out of the hospital. We declined the invitation with the excuse that it had been a long day, we were tired, and would take a rain check.

Since there was no food in the house except water and Clif bars, the Eldest had found a pizza place in town that delivered. She ordered a cheese pizza for us, Cokes, salad with chicken and breadsticks, and  cinnamon breadsticks with icing for dessert and also breakfast. We sat down to dinner and relaxed while watching Doctor Who on Amazon.

After dinner, I left my dirty dishes in the sink. Afterall, turnabout is fair play. =^,.^=

The saga continues next week. Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

    1. Yeah, everything fell into place. Because of the weather on the first trip, she only had one day to find an apartment. The real estate agent, furniture, the landlord. Like it was meant to be.

  15. Is your daughter settling in OK? It's nice that she got some furniture. That is always hard when you start off because it is pricey. Nice to see how the moving story is going. Happy a little late T day. Hugs-Erika

    1. Yes, she seems to be. We had a Skype dinner last night as Himself was teaching. She got most of the car stuff completed. PA license, insurance, registration. Tonight, she emailed me to say she had gone out to dinner with some people she works with. She also found a place that sells furniture on consignment so after she gets a little more financially settled, she will probably see about getting something besides the card table and chairs.

  16. I deeply apologize for being so late for T. I would have been by sooner, but I ate something at dinner last night that did not set well and I got very ill. I'm still fighting it.

What a great post and a wonderful landlord. Sounds like she will have some good neighbors, too.

My only concern is that the keys are so close to the door that even if she kept the chain on the door, someone could reach in and grab the keys.

Now when I visit, I normally LOVE the food. I'm a big pizza fan, and any other day that pizza and salad would have me salivating. Thanks for sharing this latest adventure in the Eldest's move-in saga with us, as well as your coke, pizza, and salad for T this Tuesday. Again, I am sorry for visiting so late.

  17. Your Eldest is really blessed. That furniture. All for nothing. What a great gift. When eventually she gets round to buying her own, she can give it to another new arrival.
The landlord sounds really nivçce and helpful. She is so lucky.
Thank you for sharing the sage. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.
    Happy Valentine's Day and a
    Belated happy T-Day,

  18. It sounds like the Eldest really lucked into a nice apartment and area. A real estate agent that finds free furniture, welcoming neighbors and a landlord who's really on hand to help - what more could you ask?

It's wonderful that you were able to make this trip with her and help her get settled in. I'm sure some great memories were made as well.

I don't know if I could handle the solo drive back. I look forward to the next episode to hear how that went.

    Happy T-day, CJ! Hugs, Eileen
