The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1.  All set to do my civic duty and go to jury duty, and I received an email saying I didn't need to report. Gained a day!

2. Planted Reggie's Magic Seeds

3. Nice lunch with a friend to discuss seating and place card ideas for her daughter's Cinderella wedding.

4. Went with my friend, Teague, on a cemetery hop to Mt. Auburn Cemetery to find the grave of my great uncle Vincent, the Judge. Seems there's a bit of a mystery  and a family secret. We also found Teague's great aunt in Mt. Feakes Cemetery. Back to Teague's house and while poking at Uncle Vincent's mystery, she found Uncle Francesco, the blind baker Dad talked about. I had an incorrect spelling of his name.

5. Enjoyed a great lunch at the D Line Diner in Watertown.

How was your week?

  1. Sounds like an interesting week. Glad you do not have to report for jury duty ... IMO the entire thing is way overrated. I got summoned a few times myself in the past and luckily got out of it (although it is not as easy to do that as it used to be here, mind you). Once I even got as far as having to show up at 7AM at the courthouse, sat there all damned day and around 3:30PM they took us in the courtroom for a DUI case. After the defendant's attorney requested the judge use another selected jury because too many in my jury group had family and/or friends who were killed by a drunk driver and could not be unbiased, we got to go home after all that wasted time!

    Have a great weekend!

    1. I've been selected for jury duty 3 times. This would have been my 4th. The first time, I was 1 juror away from being impaneled. Most times got to go home after lunch. The last time,I was impaneled as the alternate juror in an assault case where a minor child (13 yrs old on behalf of his mother) filed suit against his father. More of a case of the mother using the child as a pawn in an ugly divorce/custody agreement. Jury found no evidence of assault. Like you, I would have had to give up at least half a day sitting in the courthouse, but gained a day as it must have been a slow day on the docket and not all of the juror groups were needed.

  2. Sounds good, but what are magic seeds? Glad that you got any extra day for not having to do your duty. My week was mixed, too much dentist and trepidation about the bill when it arrives! Enjoy your weekend, hugs, Valerie

    1. After the year long calligraphy class I took last year (called The 26 Seeds), the instructor, Reggie Ezell gave us each a packet of Magic Seeds. There were seeds from morning glories he has growing in his yard.

  3. Your week sounds as interesting as mine. Seems I've been partying all week, out to lunch (in more ways than one). I enjoyed seeing the magic seeds have been planted and look forward to seeing tiny shoots soon.

  4. Forgot to mention, jury duty is the bane (and result) of voting. I have been called up twice and both times didn't make it to the pool of possible jurors. Just sitting around all day is no way to make $5.00!

    1. My dad was a lawyer so I don't find it a bane. Though it can be at inconvenient times so when the summons comes in, we in Massachusetts can change the date you have to appear. Used to be able to change the courthouse, too, but that option doesn't seem to be allowed any more. In Massachusetts, we serve on day or one trial. Most trials don't last more than 3 days. We don't get paid, not even $5, unless the trial goes over 3 days and then the pay is $50 per day. State regulations require employers to pay a worker's regular wages for the day(s) missed.

  5. You guys are neophytes! I've been called or served on jury duty 17 times!!!!! Up north I used to like it. It meant a day (or longer) off from work. Now I feel I've done my duty and that's what I'm going to say when I go for #18 next month!!!! (On the bright side....in 5 more years I can say no forever!)

    1. 17 times! WOW! You're like a professional juror! :-D Good luck with saying you've served enough.Up here, the only way you are excused is due to hardship. And the judge decides if it's a hardship or not. And age does have its privileges
