T Sands for Volant Mills

After the sumptuous brunch at the Iron Bridge Inn, we decided to walk off the calories by browsing through the shops at near by Volant Mills. From the website: "Volant is a unique village of quaint shops and restaurants located on Route 208 only 10 minutes from I-79 and I-80.  Enjoy shopping  on an old-fashioned main street nestled in the rolling hills of scenic western Pennsylvania Amish country."

View from the parking lot

The mill wheel though the water source that once turned the wheel was dried up.

This handsome, black and white sphinx pointed the way to the shops

Wooden rockers to set a spell on the porch

or a swing for a bit of sparking

Close up of the mill wheel

More shops along the main street in mid-19th century houses.

We were disappointed the Wicked Little Witches shop was closed due to renovations.

The mill stones

It was only mid- July when we were there, but all the Halloween stuff was out. Still this headless horseman was pretty cool.

After browsing the nooks and crannies of all the shops, put your glad rags on if you are so inclined

and take a break for some coffee

tea, or a cool beverage.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

    1. I loved that red polka dot teapot. Sitting on the porch in the rockers and enjoying a cuppa would be a great location to watch the tourists and to collect gossip :-D

  6. Looks like a lovely spot to visit. I have been to some Amish and Mennonite towns near Lancaster, PA and they were charming, not to mention the produce, handmade crafts and home baked goods. Thanks for sharing and happy T day!

  7. This looks a wonderful and interesting destination. Your photos all looked great and i was drawn to the headless horseman, I wouldn't like him in my home.
The teapots looked good and would hold quite a few cups to sit and enjoy while watching the folk pass by.
    Happy T day wishes.

  9. What an amazing post, CJ. It reminds me that there is still a working mill about 80 miles from me. It sits on a major river that runs through KS, so there is little chance of the river going dry or the wheel from turning. What I most enjoyed was seeing the old mill stones. Of curse, I enjoyed seeing the shops, too. They seemed to be former houses taken over and turned into shops which I think is a great way to recycle old buildings. LOVED the tea pots and the lovely set of blue and white dishes and teapot, creamer, sugar container, etc. It was a wonderful post and I really loved this unique entry you shared for T this Tuesday.

    1. All the shops were on Main St. in old 19th. century homes. They were filled floor to attic with all sorts of things. Was a little scary going up some of the stairs as in old homes the stairwells are steep and narrow. The floor boards all creaked, too. Someone figured out how to breathe new life into all those old houses.

  10. That looks like a lovely little town. Thank you for taking us there. I also love those rocking chairs, but I guess I’d need a porch to go with it.
Yes, that red polka dot tea pot is my favorite too. A beauty.
    Happy T Day,

    1. The red teapot was so cute. Had it been deep blue, it might have found a new home.

  11. So cool! I'm glad they've managed to make a going concern of this as a tourist attraction. It must've been devastating when the water source dried up. I'd love to visit the shops. Established 1812! There's a lot of history there. I looked up their Wikipedia entry and enjoyed reading about them. Happy T Tuesday :)

    1. The shops all had a bit for everyone and price point. Restaurants, wines, kitchen stuff, antiques, home decor.

  14. What a interesting place to visit. You have some fun things pictured. It is so disappointing when a shop that you want to visit is closed. We live in central Pennsylvania so we get to enjoy those scenic rolling hills as well.
    Happy Tea Day,

  15. This looks like a cool place to shop. Yup-I am very late for T. But I still enjoyed my visit. And it was cool to see that double hanging rocker. I have a single rocker (not hanging) just like it. Hope it was a happy T day. hugs-Erika

  16. I love quaint little shopping villages like that, CJ. We had one in NJ, Flemington, that provided many pleasant day trips. We also made it to New Hope, PA a couple of times. "Sparking" - I haven't heard that word in a while ;-)

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen
