Progress on Ink's Portrait

When I was a kid and did a paint by number kit, I began in a very linear fashion and started with all the number 1s, onto 2s, etc.

Winnie's Pick's kits have very general instructions. Taping the canvas to a piece of sturdy cardboard or foam core, and just begin painting. I had a large sheet of cardboard and taped the canvas to that. I like the fact that I can move the canvas and paint out in the sun room.

It was suggested that right-handers start in the upper left corner and Southpaws in the opposite corner.

I also decided that I would start on the background around Ink. The tapestry background of my our his chair may prove to be tedious.

I thought by starting with the background, I might be able to feather the edges around Ink to suggest fur. His fur wasn't very fluffy, more sleek, and soft like velvet.

I didn't like either of the small, round brushes that came with the kit. The brush hairs were uneven and too long so I switched to a small, round 0 brush I had.

This was after the first session.

After the second session, Ink begins to take shape. Project total: approximately 5 hours.

  2. Heavens, I've never had a paint by numbers kit and what you have described, makes me want one even less. Too fussy for me. And I have several brushes that remind me of the tiny ones you described. They are good for nothing except using them as embellishments in art quilts. I especially love how "Ink" is holding your brush, too. One good thing I can say is, you have lots of patience and skill. Good looking painting so far.

  4. It's been sooo long since I did a paint-by-number, and what I did was tiny compared to yours. I hadn't thought of the issues of where to begin depending on handedness. That's a shame the brushes that came with it didn't work well for you. I look forward to hearing/seeing how it goes.

    1. The kits I did as a kid were not any bigger than 8 x 10 so at 16 x 20 this seems huge

  9. I think I got a kit at Christmas, and found it so frustrating. I wanted to put the colors where I WANTED. But I was about 10.

    1. Yeah, we were such rule followers then. I felt the same way about coloring books. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized I can break those kinds of rules 😺
