Saturday Afternoon at the Movies

This idea came from a Facebook meme:
Over 10 days, post your 10 all time favorite films. What movie has really made an impact on you or what films can you watch over and over and never tire of? Post either the movie poster, DVD cover or even a screenshot on your timeline. No need to explain.

Only I had a hard time picking out just 10 movies so my favorites over the next few hundred Saturdays 😸 in semi-alphabetical order:me favorite films. Only I had a hard time picking out just 10 movies so my favorites over the next few hundred Saturdays 😸 in semi-alphabetical order:

Down to the Sea in Ships (1949), Richard 😻 Widmark, Lionel Barrymore, (Baby) Dean Stockwell

Sadly, this movie isn't available online and it's rarely shown. After his successful, movie debut as thug,Tommy Udo in Kiss of Death (1947), Widmark found himself playing thug-type characters. He was afraid he would be typecast so this movie was a vehicle for him to show he could play a good guy as well.

It's too bad this movie isn't readily available. It's a charming coming of age story for Stockwell's character, Jed, as the grandson of Captain Bering Joy (Lionel Barrymore). Widmark plays the First Mate, Dan Lunceford. There's a bet on between him and Captain Joy. Lunceford is entrusted with tutoring Jed. If Jed can pass his school exams, Lunceford will be granted his Master's license a ship of his own, and Captain Joy will retire. With Lunceford's modern seafaring knowledge, it's also a coming of age story for himself as he learns wisdom also comes with experience.

  1. I haven't seen this film, I don't think. The hubby loves old naval films so it might have been something we watched at some point in time. I will have to mention it to him. Happy december and thanks for sharing. Hugs-Erika
