T Stands for Thanksgiving in August

After a visit to urgent care, a pizza lunch, and an afternoon at the motel pool. the Two Old Ladies on the Road decided to treat ourselves to a real dinner. We went to the popular Hart's Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith, New Hampshire.

I can't remember if it was last year we were there or the year before, but we had their amazing Thanksgiving turkey sandwich called The Gobbler. Real roasted turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy on a brioche bun. This year we went all out for the Thanksgiving dinner.

The waiter, the same one who served us lunch last time, started us off with drinks, I had my usual unsweetened ice tea with lemon. He also brought a delicious, house relish served with crackers. It was hard not to wolf down the relish and crackers because it was so good, but it would also mean not being able to finish dinner. He also brought bread (my downfall) and cornbread. My self-imposed rule on this trip was not bringing leftovers back to the hotel.

We both had ordered the small dinner which came with 3.5 ounces of turkey though it still looked like a lot more. There was also cranberry sauce, stuffing, and gravy. Because eating for the week was mostly going to be pizza, burgers, ice cream, I decided to get a vegetable, green beans, and a plain jacket potato.

We finished dinner and there was no room for dessert. We rolled ourselves back to our little cabin on the hill.

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week

1. Two old ladies on the road checked in at the Half Moon Motel and Cottages. We got our favorite cabin #6. Because weather for Friday sounded iffy, Teague asked if we could add an extra day. The answer was YES.

2. Over the weekend I had done something to my knee. Getting up out of a chair or climbing stairs it made a click or a snap. By Tuesday it was very swollen. Teague took me to Urgent Care. I wasn’t in pain. I had X-rays which only showed arthritis. The doctor prescribed short term dose of Prednisone for the inflammation, put me in a knee stabilizer, and sent me on my merry way.

3. I was told to start the medication the next morning. I have reactions to several medications and I was worried about taking this one and having a reaction.

4. I took the Prednisone after breakfast and had a little nausea, a very common side-effect. The nausea wore off by noon. I did not spoil Summer vacation.

5. We went to the beach at Lake Winnipesaukee. With the brace, I was able to walk to the water and wade up to my ankles so the brace wouldn’t get wet. Did I mention I did not ruin Summer vacation?

Monet and Miro

Monet and Miro, and Me

are resuming Two Old Ladies on the Road from the Ogunquit trip at the end of June 2026

27. June. I woke up at 6:30 am and thought TFE. Too early. I thought I'd just lounge in bed, but fell asleep. I woke up at 8:30. I had a leisurely breakfast of oatmeal and a bagel.

Mornings are luxuriously slow for us. Quiet. Minimal chatting. We each have downtime to work in puzzle books (Teague) or journal (me).

For a late lunch, we decided to head North to the next town over in Wells. We stopped at Billy's Chowder House. It's on the Ogunquit River. We were seated at the window (I think it helps being old ladies) and had a nice view of the river and marshland. I had a salad and a cup of clam chowder.

After lunch we drove along the coast to Kennebunk. There were lots of beautiful beach houses to admire and dream about.

On the way back we stopped in Saco at Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shops. It was a nice shop to putter in. Books, souvenirs, stationery. I was glad there was a nice art and stationery area as I had forgotten to bring a pencil sharpener and my colored pencils were pretty blunt. I found a nice blue sharpener that would catch the shavings. I also found, to my surprise, a Micron Pigma Pen. The one I had brought was drying out.

T Stands for How Unimaginative Another Lobster Roll

After running the "What do you feel like doin', Marty?" lines (from the 1955 movie, Marty, starring Ernest Borgnine, we ended up at the Shore Road Restaurant in York Beach, Maine. I had another Connecticut Lobster Roll, home-made potato chips, and a ginger ale.

After lunch, we drove over to Nubble Light. In all of the times that I've been to see the lighthouse, I've never seen it with fog rolling in. This might have been the day that I chatted with an older couple (probably the same age or even a few years younger than me!). They had ridden up on a motorcycle. The fella told me they had been up there the day before. He said the fog was so thick, you couldn't even see the lighthouse.

The fog bank rolling in reminded me of one of my favorite movies, The Incredible Shrinking Man.

Monet, Me, and Miro

are looking over the journal I kept while two old ladies were on the road in Ogunquit, Maine. Day 3 started at 8 am and rainy. We had a leisurely breakfast in. I had tea and a cinnamon scone

Late afternoon cleared so we took a drive to York Beach and had lunch outside at the Sun and Surf Restaurant. After lunch, you'll never guess where we went? That's right, in the cheap seats. We visited Nubble Light. The views never get old.

Thunderstorms were predicted and the sky got a bit threatening. We drove to Ogunquit Beach maybe hoping to see the storm, but the sky cleared. We found a parking spot and the parking app worked.

We sat on the beach. I got brave and put my feet in the water. The water temperature was around 61 °F. (16 °C) I thought my heart was going to stop as the water was so cold. I thought if I waded around a bit, I'd get used to the water. All I got were blue feet (embiggen the above photo)

On the way back to the motel, we stopped at Big Daddy's ice cream. I had a small dish of Chocolate Almond Joy. Chocolate ice cream, almonds, and coconut.

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things about this week.

1. We celebrated the Eldest's birthday at the UxLocale for dinner. At home, we had home-made, (lactose free) ice cream cake: cookies and cream ice cream, strawberries, and chocolate chips between pound cake layers

2. The groomer kindly fit in Calli and Quill to have a nail trim before she went on vacation back home to England.

3.Two old ladies are going on another trip the last weekend of August. Teague made reservations.

4. We watched Hail, Mary. I'm not crying; you're crying

5. We ran some errands and then called a lunch order in to Tony's, our local pizza and sub shop. They make excellent sandwiches. I wanted to eat a little healthier so I ordered an eggplant Parmigiana sub. 😉

T Stands for Billy's Chowder House

We decided to go for a drive up the coast. We stopped for a late lunch at Billy's Chowder House in Wells, Maine. I wasn't very hungry so I had a cup of clam chowder and a house salad. The salad was a kale mix. Kale! I don't understand its popularity as it tastes like grass clippings.

We talked how the area had changed.  In my mid-twenties when Teague had moved to California, I spent weekends with a work buddy. Wells was known for shoe outlets so we would visit the Bass and Dexter shoe outlets. Sadly long gone.

The coast road was dotted with small cottages. Small cottages around Nubble Light, too. All those little cottages were razed and in their place large and glorious homes with magnificent views of the ocean. We admired the beautiful homes as we toodled along.

Monet, Me, and Miro

are looking over the journal I kept while two old ladies were on the road in Ogunquit, Maine

Day 2: We were up at 7 AM. Since we had bought breakfast stuff at the grocery store, we had a leisurely breakfast in. I had tea and a bagel and honey pecan cream cheese.

Late morning, we tried to go to the beach. Teague found a parking spot. There was only one parking kiosk and a line was forming. I texted Teague that there were three people ahead of me. When it was my turn the 🤬machine wouldn't ready my debit card. A line was beginning to form so I stepped out of line. The fellow in front of me was walking away and I ran up and asked him, which way he had inserted his credit/debit card. He kindly showed me. I had tried it that way. I turned back to the kiosk, but now everyone had arrived at the beach and there were a dozen people at the kiosk. I tried downloading the parking app, but no joy. Apparently, you have to be on Wi-Fi to download apps.

We skipped the beach and went to the Maine Diner in Wells for lunch. The diner is a popular spot as it was featured on The Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri in 2010.

Since we were planning on having dinner at the food trucks, we wanted a light, that is normal portion lunch. I had an egg salad sandwich, chips, and a Coke. Perfect.

After lunch back at the motel, Teague went for a swim. The pool is not heated and thought it was a pleasant day, it wasn't really a beach day. I put my hand in the water. BRRRRR!

Teague had to take a call so I walked down to the river with my journal and had some plein air time. A Red-winged Blackbird kept me company. There were lots of birds singing and calling. I used to Merlin app and heard a Gray Catbird, Cedar Waxwing, a Song Sparrow, and a Willet

We went to the food trucks and even though we went late, the place was packed. We almost decided to leave, but a table opened up and I bolted for it. While we were waiting for our food, three women from South Carolina asked if they could share the table. They were fun to chat with.

We had burgers and fries. Teague and one of the women went to the Congdon's window to get a sundae built on a doughnut. I asked Teague to get me a donut with coconut on it as I heard people saying there were no more Bavarian Cream or Boston Cream doughnuts.

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1. Himself saved movies on TCM and he saved Big Wednesday for me.

2. I dropped a heavy object on my toe and didn't break my toe or the heavy object. I did swear a lot

3.  I followed the Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffin recipe made with the blueberries from the garden

4. I talked to the Young One. She's planning on coming back for a visit

5. Teague and I talked about plans for Two Old Ladies on the Road in August

T Stands for Sun and Surf

For lunch this day we headed South to York Beach and the Sun and Surf Restaurant on Long Sands Beach. It was a perfect day for fried clams, but MP (market price) on the menu means expen$ive. The waitress told me the fried clams were $42. Yup, thank you, no.  Portions at restaurants are hefty, and I didn't want to bring back anything to the motel. Reheating fish in a microwave isn't a pleasant thing. (To think when I came up here with a work friend 47 years ago, while Teague was living in California, this restaurant was just a little clam shack)

I opted for a cheap less expensive  cod basket and an Arnold Palmer. We ate outside on the terrace. If I stood up and looked over the seawall around the restaurant I could see

Nubble Light at the tip of the point

After lunch we drove over. Yup, the lighthouse was still there. The only difference was the cloud formations were different and a fog bank was rolling in.

I struck up a conversation with an elderly couple. I have to stop thinking like that because I don't think I was far behind them in age. They had ridden up on a motorcycle. They told me the day before you couldn't see the lighthouse because of the fog. We watched a young woman putting on scuba gear. She had booties, gloves, a hood. The water was really cold. I had never seen anyone diving here. Teague told me they did testing and diving certifications.

After conversation and admiring the scenery, we decided to stop at Ogunquit Beach. If there was parking and the parking app I downloaded worked. We found a parking space, the parking app worked, and I dipped my toes in the water. The water was a brisk 61 °F (16 °C) I thought my heart was going to stop from cold water shock. No wading that day.
