T Stands For Beyond Burger

For the last teaching assistant's lunch, Himself chose the Nu Kitchen in Worcester. The restaurant has a large selection of vegetarian and vegan fare as one of the TAs is vegan. Though there are tables in the restaurant, it's more like a healthy, clean eating fast food, and it's quite popular. We got the very last table.

I ordered a Beyond Burger which is a plant-based "burger". It was paired with grilled pineapple, lettuce, a special sauce, (and pickled red onion which I chose to skip) on delicious ciabatta bread. The sandwich came with a choice of kettle chips or a spicy cucumber salad. Since there were no tables when we first got there and we were going to get the food to go and then take the food back to the school, I thought the salad might be cumbersome to deal with. I ordered the chips and then a table opened up. I also had an unsweetened iced tea.

I liked the meaty flavor of the "burger" paired with the pineapple. The burger was good, but didn't have quite the same juicy, burger texture as a traditional hamburger. Since it was "fast-food" lunch, there were no leftovers. So the poor, Little Princess had to cook dinner.

Have you ever had plant-based meat?

T Stands For Inspired By

Last week, Elizabeth had a pretty tea service for her post and another Tea Lady in an earlier post had mentioned making a decoction with sliced ginger and hot water. I'm so sorry I can't remember the name of the Ginger Tea Lady and I can't find a past post. When Bastelmania goes to her favorite cafes for her cappuccino, there's always a little goodie served alongside.

These ladies inspired me to treat my self like company, to try a decoction of ginger tea, and to pretend I was visiting a cafe for a cuppa

Setting the tea table was easy, but making ginger tea when there was no ginger root available was a little harder. I had some ginger taffy-like candy so I tossed a piece into hot water and let it melt. The candy is more spicy than sweet so it made a really nice tea. A lemon cookie along side added to the illusion of sitting in a nice cafe. Okay, it was really more like a little girl playing with her tea set, but I can pretend with the best of them.

T Stands For My Favorite Sandwich

When I was a kid my favorite sandwich was peanut butter and jelly. It was practically the only thing I ate when I was 5 years old that they called me the Peanut Butter Kid.  I hated grilled cheese sandwiches so on grilled cheese day at school, Mrs. Burns, a neighbor and the school dietitian, would have a peanut butter sandwich for me as I went through the lunch line. What me spoiled? I must have overdosed on the PB because I don't really care for it much. I will eat it if I'm too lazy to make something else or there's nothing else in the house. I learned to eat grilled cheese. Not my favorite, but it will do in a pinch.

So it may come as a surprise that as an adult my favorite sandwich is a Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo is a ham and cheese sandwich made fancy by dipping it in egg and fried like French toast. The sandwich is then dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of raspberry jam.

I was first introduced to the Monte Cristo during the late 1970s or early 1980s at a restaurant in Framingham, Massachusetts called Bumbershoots. Bumbershoots used better bread and a fancier cheese like Swiss rather than Arnold Bread and American cheese I used in my sandwich. Sadly, Bumbershoots is no longer in business.

And what happened to the Peanut Butter Kid? She overdosed on PB & J and only eats it now if there's nothing left in the house to make sandwiches with or she's too lazy to cook.

What's your favorite sandwich?

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1.For Mother's Day, Himself gave me a buoy bell windchime, with a black bear on the clapper, grilled Little Princess steaks (filet mignon wrapped in bacon), and baked brownies for dessert.

2. I also Skyped with the Eldest

3. I had fun playing with the Scan n Cut machine (to be seen in future blogposts)

4.  Himself also gave me a weather station as a very, early birthday present

5. With the weather finally warming up, we moved the television into the sun room.

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1. We went to see 1917 and then had a late lunch or early dinner at Uno's.

2. Awesome lunch and dinner leftover from Uno's. We got their buy one entree and get a second entree to take home. No cooking for a few days!

3. Kept getting errors on the Sleep Number bed controller. Tried one more time crawling under the bed and checking all the connections. Missed one. Plugged everything back in and no more errors.

4. New, slim, filter carafe arrived from Amazon.  The Brita pitcher was too big to fit in the refrigerator. Now, crystal clear, water from the tap to refill bottles/thermos for teaching, activities and traveling. Now won't have to buy water bottles when traveling. The Little Princess can't stand the smell of chlorine in municipal tap water.

5. While waiting to pay the taxes at town hall, a man can down the corridor pushing a dolly (hand truck). He looked at me and asked, "Want a ride?" as he whipped around the corner. So non sequitur it made me laugh.

How was your week?

And the five participants randomly drawn from Monday's Visits and Kind Words are:

Robin, Sandy from CA, jinxxxygirl (Deb), Divers and Sundry, FSG (You said not to enter Da Tabbies, so I entered you.😺) . Please EMAIL ME your snail mail address. Robin, I have your particulars.

Thank you, everyone, for your visits and kind words.

The Princess and the Laundromat (based on a true story)

In honor of the new washing machine, a story from May 2008

Once upon a time, the Little Princess' washing machine broke down. The washer was not to be repaired for several days, and the Little Princess did not know what she would do. Himself came to the rescue and took the Little Princess to the laundromat.

The Little Princess had never been inside a laundromat before. Armed with two rolls of quarters, the Little Princess followed Himself into the building. He carried two, huge duffel bags filled with towels, jeans, unmentionables, and karate uniforms. He had begged the Little Princess to bring all the dirty clothes, but the Little Princess was too embarrassed to air all her dirty laundry in front of the other patrons.

Himself showed the Little Princess how to stuff the heavy duty machines with lots of laundry. There were two soap dispensers so the Little Princess poured a capful of detergent and divided it between the two dispensers. She set lots of quarters in the slots, pushed and the washing machine magically hummed to life and began washing clothes. Himself left the Little Princess to stuff two more machines while he went to the super, super machines.

When the Little Princess was done stuffing her loads, she went to help Himself. He had stuffed and filled seven machines. The Little Princess went to put the soap in the soap dispenser, but alas, the soap dispenser was on the top of the machine and the Little Princess could not reach.

When all the laundry was happily tumbling in all the machines, Himself found a National Geographic magazine and a chair and settled Himself for the wait.

The Little Princess was thrilled to see two of the washers had completed the cycle. She saw other patrons grabbing cards, emptying their wash, and wheeling the carts to a bank of dryers. The Little Princess grabbed a cart, her laundry, and a roll of quarters and found an empty dryer. She put all the clothes in the dryer, but looked at the dryer with dismay. There was only one slot for one quarter.

Mustering her courage, the Little Princess approached a patron. "I'm a laundromat virgin. How much time does a quarter buy in the dryer?"

The patron very sweetly told the Little Princess, "Eight minutes, but I find it usually takes three or four quarters."

The Little Princess thanked the patron, counted out three quarters, and fed the dryer.

Other loads were finishing so the Little Princess emptied more clothes into her cart, found more empty dryers, and fed more quarters into the slot.

About this time, Himself announced he desired a Coke. The Little Princess looked at her dwindling roll of quarters and told him to wait until he got home and then Himself could guzzle all the liters of soda he wanted.

The load of towels did not dry with three quarters, and the Little Princess had run out of change. Himself showed the Little Princess how to make change from the change maker. He fed a ten dollar bill into the machine and it rained quarters. The Little Princess clapped her hands with delight, scooped up the quarters, and fed all the hungry dryers.

When the dryers finished, the Little Princess, with help from Himself, folded all the laundry and neatly stuffed it into the duffel bags.

Himself and the Little Princess were the last patrons in the laundry.

The proprietor came to chat with the Little Princess. "This was your first time in a laundromat, wasn't it?" she said.

"How could you tell?"

"You didn't chat with any of the patrons."

"Oh, I thought you had noticed my charming deer in the headlights look."

The Little Princess was greatly relieved to see the washer repairman early Tuesday morning. He diagnosed something clogging the pump. He removed the pump and sure enough there was a little piece of wood inside."

The Little Princess tapped her cheek with her index finger.

"Hmm, who in this household would have a woody in his pocket?"

The Little Princess' washer was repaired, and she stuffed the remaining laundry in it. She happily filled the soap dispenser which she could reach all by herself, pushed the buttons, and played with her altered book while the washer sang.

The End.

T Stands for The Start of the Journey

We left on our trip the day after the Fourth of July. The Fourth celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4. July 1776. Even the gas pump wanted in on the celebration when we stopped to get gas.

We made a detour which would add an extra hour to our trip and stopped at the cemetery to visit my folks. The Fourth of July would have been their 75th wedding anniversary. As is custom, I greeted Ma first and brought a bouquet of flowers. She was the Queen of the family and would get her nose bent out of joint if we said hello to

Dad first.

While at the cemetery, a few rows over from the folks, I noticed a symbol on the headstone I had never noticed before. The Department of Veteran's Affairs only allows approved graphics on the headstone. I thought this must have been the Angel Gabriel, but looking up the symbol, it is the Angel Moroni, the designation for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

We got back on the road and stopped at a Friendly's restaurant for lunch.

I had an unsweetened ice tea and the Young One had a Sprite, a lemon-lime soda.

Turkey sandwich and fries for the Young One and a chicken sandwich and waffle fries for me.

Don't eat!

Hanging on the wall in the restaurant: "A balanced diet is a vanilla cone in one hand and chocolate in the other." Wise words to live by. Back on the road again. We left on a Thursday to avoid heavy vacation/Summer traffic on the Mass Pike. We also decided we wouldn't rush to get where we were going.

The Eldest was working the second shift ( 3 PM - 11:30 PM) at the hospital so we wouldn't get much of a chance to see her before the weekend. The trip to where the Eldest lives is 9 hours without stops. We stopped at the halfway point in Wilkes-Barre (pronounced Barry), Pennsylvania.

Across the parking lot from the hotel is a Perkins Restaurant. We had their Duo Combo. Half a Sandwich and a slice of pie. I had ice tea with lemon, a Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich and a slice of Lemon Meringue pie. I don't remember what sandwich Himself ordered, but he had the Chocolate Silk pie.

There was a fund raiser for Give Kids the World so I made a contribution and chose this funny chicken duck which reminded me of Henery Hawk from the Warner Brothers cartoons.

In the evening, I like to have a last cup of tea for the day. When I travel, I bring my own fixin's for tea. (I usually carry a couple of tea bags with me in my purse in case I visit friends who do not drink black tea. I'm not a big fan of herbal teas.) For this road trip:  English Breakfast tea, cream that doesn't require refrigeration (the powdered creamer makes me dizzy and sick), and bottled water because the Little Princess is spoiled and doesn't like chlorinated tap water. Not even to brush her teeth. I must have left the bottle of liquid Stevia in the car and was too lazy to go out to get it so used a packet of sugar that is left with the coffee machine in the hotel room.

The Little Princess and the Pea-low

Once upon a time there was a Little Princess, and she had a terrible time falling asleep. She didn't have a problem with the mattress.

For a long time she slept on two Eider down pillows, but they became flat and couldn't be laundered. She tried all sorts of pillows expensive, cheap, foam, never latex as she has a severe allergy. They all aggravated her Achilles Pea. They were too hot. Some became so hot the Little Princess was surprised she wasn't immolated in her sleep. And the pillow companies that boasted their pillows were cool and would dissipate the heat, LIED! So the Little Princess would wake up hot and cranky with migraine headaches.

She tried the Possessive Pronoun Pillow, but it was so lumpy, it felt like it was filled with little, brick peas. And it was hot. On the plus side, it could be laundered. But running the pillow through the washer/dryer did nothing to make it more comfortable.

Since she got the Number mattress, she also tried the Number Cooling Pillow. While she grudgingly admited to being able to sleep on it, the pillow retains heat. And can't be laundered. After 5 years, it was recommended to get a new pillow.

The Little Princess saw an ad for a Sleepgram pillow. It boasted comfort, washable, cool, and customizable, and was not very expensive. It sounded perfect. So, she ordered it. The pillow comes in three parts. A soft outer shell which unzips. And two inserts, one soft and one medium. You can use one or both inserts to customize the pillow.

The Little Princess tried all three pillows together. The pillow was so high and so hard that it felt like a very, large bag of frozen peas. The Little Princess could feel a headache coming on. That was NFG. Not good at all.

Then the Little Princess just used the soft insert. The pillow was soft, but the Little Princess still couldn't get comfy.

Then the Little Princess removed the soft insert and used the medium insert.  The Little Princess slept. She didn't spend the entire night tossing and turning the pillow over to find a cool side. She woke up and didn't have a headache. She woke up rested, but felt sleeping on the pillow was just...okay.

Maybe it will take the 100 day trial period for the Little Princess to fall in love with her pillow. Maybe the Little Princess is just too fussy. She has been accused of this before, but she doesn't really give a...bag of peas.

Please, Let there Be Light

The Little Princess was tired about having to paint the lantern post. She whined why couldn't the post be made of PVC or resin or some material that didn't need to be scraped and painted every few years? So she let her fingers do the searching. And lo, and behold, the Little Princess found her dream come true at the website of the Big Orange Box Store. She showed it to Himself. Wouldn't this make a great Mother's Day gift. He told her to order an Outdoor Landscape Lighting Post Enclosure with Outlet Cover, too. Yes, indeed, a fine gift.

The lantern arrived and Himself installed the outlet. The Little Princess selected the spot for the lantern and weeded. Himself brought home dirt and stone to weight the planter. They put the post together despite the inadequate instructions. It's a good thing Himself is very handy.

He helped the Little Princess to level the spot. The lantern was moved into place and weighted with the stone. The Little Princess plugged the lantern into the outlet and went inside to turn on the outside lights. Nada. Nichts. Nothing.

Then the Little Princess noticed an on off switch on the lantern. Pushed it and still nothing. There was power coming to the outlet as it had an illuminated red light.

Himself sent the Little Princess inside to get a lamp that worked. They plugged it into the outlet. Nope.

Himself suspected the problem was with the outlet. It was one he had hanging around in the garage. He had tried to trip the reset switch on it, but the switch wouldn't give.

So when it stops raining and the grass is dry so Himself can safely play with the electricity, Himself will go to the Big Orange Box Store and buy a new outdoor outlet and try again.

At least the lantern looks good, doesn't need to be painted, and is not leaning.

T Stands For Treated Like A Little Princess

After I posted T Stands for Blooming Tea, my friend, Tiggy, from Scotland commented on how I didn't have a sandwich plate with the tea service. I told Tiggy since my friend, Red, has dietary issues, I don't usually put out goodies when we get together for tea. Tiggy just said, "too late."

After 3 or almost 4 weeks went by, Tiggy asked if I had received a package. Nothing had showed up, and I told her not to worry. I had ordered a custom made bracelet from England for the Young One's college graduation back in 2014. Over a month had gone by, no bracelet. I contacted the jeweler and he sent another. The day after the 2nd bracelet arrived, the 1st bracelet arrived. And so after a long wait,

Tiggys package arrived tightly wrapped as if the Crown jewels were inside.

Pretty stickers hold wrapping tissue in place.

Inside, a lovely sandwich plate depicting a scene with "heeland coo design" (Highland cows). I didn't know these oblong plates were called sandwich plates. I thought they were used to serve crackers and cheese or cookies. In her note, Tiggy said, "Nowadays, some people use these as dressing table tidies."

The markings on the back of the plate.

Tiggy's lovely postcard with a notation that that date of the plate is from the 1920s or 1930s. I did a little research on the Empire Porcelain Company. To find the stamp: England 6-58 means the piece was made in June of 1958. Still vintage, but not as old as Tiggy may have been told when she picked it up. Old or new, it's a lovely, charming piece.

And fit for the table setting for a Little Princess's lunch. The postcard also included instructions on how to serve. "Sandwiches cut into triangles and placed like a mountain peak on the plate." There was even a fun drawing showing how the sandwiches were to be arranged.

When I'm home alone, I usually eat lunch on a paper plate or over the sink, but Saturday was such a beautiful day, I decided to treat myself like royalty. set a proper table, and enjoy lunch in the sun room.

I made some egg salad, cut the crust off the bread, and arranged the sandwiches on the plate as directed. I didn't have white sandwich bread so my triangles aren't evenly sized. I thought the sandwich plate would look nice with my Willow Ware plates, and the blueberry teapot a remembrance of my Godmother. She would have approved of the sandwich plate.

Thank you so much for thinking of me, my dear friend. Oh, and Tiggy, for future reference. I take my tea white with one sugar. One day, I plan to visit and have tea in your wee hoosie.

My Little Corner

This week's project in my little corner was to bring up my main computer and peripherals from the basement. I've been usingThe Young One's old laptop networked to the printer, but I was getting tired of running up and down the stairs to print something.

I had been looking for a computer desk. Something that would be able to hold the printer and the document scanner. Nothing seemed to fit the bill.

I had a 6 foot folding table in the garage. The table was used when I did craft fairs. Himself graciously dug it out so the Little Princess didn't have to worry about the spiders or any critters that might have decided to make a home in it. Fortunately, they didn't. I gave it a good cleaning and a colorful, cheap inexpensive tablecloth gave the table a makeover.

All the equipment fit and all the electrical spaghetti is contained and hidden under the table. From downstairs, I brought the chair up from my writing desk. It's seen better days, but is serviceable for the time being.

Next up is to reconfigure the computer  arrangement so I can get Himself's computer off the dining room table. Just on the off chance we use the dining room table to dine on instead of a flat file.

T Stands for Dinner and a Meeting

I belong to a Wellness Group. On the fifth Tuesday of the month, the group meets at the Villari's Natick Martial Arts Studio. This is the dojo where Himself (a 4th degree black belt) teaches and takes classes. Since I had the meeting, I thought he'd like to come along. We could go out to dinner before the meeting, and he could work out while the meeting was going on.

There are lots of chain restaurants in the Natick/Framingham area to choose from, but I had a gift card to The Outback. I love the Outback especially the Coconut Shrimp. Perusing the menu online, I saw the restaurant was offering a Surf and Turf Special. Steak with Coconut Shrimp. My mouth watered.

Something didn't look quite right when we pulled into the parking lot. There were no cars. Not one. And then we saw the notice on the door. This location had closed. So no Coconut Shrimp for The Little Princess.

Steps from Outback is Legal Seafood, but Himself didn't feel like eating at Legal. We were also near Pizzeria Uno's and Bertucci's, an Italian restaurant. I didn't feel like Uno's, and Himself and The Wizards (other professors from the college) usually go to Bertucci's a couple of times a semester. We decided to head across the highway to the Natick Mall and

The Cheesecake Factory. It was chilly so no diners on the patio.

The menu is extensive. It takes nearly 20 minutes to decide what to eat. I debated skipping dinner and just ordering a slab of too die for cheesecake.

I liked the mermaid skylights.

We ordered stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer. They were good, but Ma made them better. A Coke for Himself and an Arnold Palmer (half lemonade, half iced tea) for me.

We each had a house salad. Mine with balsamic vinegarette and Himself had Ranch dressing, I think. We also had bread, but I was too busy eating and didn't take a picture.

I had hoped The Cheesecake Factory had Coconut Shrimp on the menu, but nope. Himself ordered a surf and turf special, Steak Diane with Salmon, mashed potatoes, and asparagus.

I ordered Crispy Pineapple Chicken and Shrimp with veggies and rice in a sweet and spicy sauce. Yup, those are Himself's asparagus spears as he doesn't like asparagus. He doesn't know what he's missing. I also got a taste of his salmon, and he had a taste of my shrimp.

Portions were bigly, yuge so we got a doggie bag, and I asked for a to go cup so I could take the rest of my beverage to the meeting.

This is Bob. Bob is the same rank I was 14 years ago when I went on sabbatical. Green Belt with stripe (four ranks away from 1st degree black belt. There are 10 levels of black belt.)

The Wellness meeting is held in the waiting area between the large and small studios. Some members of the group recently participated in The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, offering Reiki treatments to cancer patients/survivors (free) and a nominal fee for others. All money collected was donated to the American Cancer Society. I think this was the 5th year the group has participated. I had to miss as I was teaching a workshop at the Worcester Public Libary. We also discussed people coming to Reiki to reduce stress (that's how I began the journey).  Because Master Beef, Reiki Master/Master of Masters has a martial arts background, he also brings and shares with us Chi Gong (breathing and moving) and Wu Chi ( the art of stillness) exercises. Discussion also invovled other energy work, and philosophical discussions.

While we were having our meeting, Himself was working out in the small studio, or as I like to call it the CJ Kennedy Gallery. I was commissioned to paint the five Shaolin animals. Dragon, Tiger (I named him Fluffy), and Leopard (affectionately named Burly) hang in the studio. Snake and Crane will be painted later this year.

A Prezzie

My friend, Frauee, is a German teacher from Mason City, Iowa. (Home of  Meredith Wilson famous for The Music Man) Frauee's German 4 students designed a tee shirt for a fundraiser. (I think it was for a fundraiser) The students used the Bavarian coat of arms and the blue fusils (diamonds) mostly associated with Bavaria. Bavaria is where Frauee's heart lies. The students did a great job with their design.

I had tried to order a shirt but heard about the fundraiser too late to get my order in on time. Frauee told me if a second printing was done, she'd let me know. Of course, she didn't let me know, but sent me the shirt anyway. Yeah, she's very generous that way.

If the front is spectacular the back is even better. You got to have a name printed on the back of the shirt. What could be more perfect for a Little Princess? Danke sehr, Frauee. Das Hemd ist ausgezeichnet! Ich mag es sehr gern.

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1. I saw my first robin of the season. Too bad, its poor little beak will be buried in snow this weekend.

2. Dusted Ma's chairs and thought of her. Looked out the window and the male cardinal was sitting on the trellis. Lots of birds were visiting the feeder. Chickadees. Nuthatches. Juncoes. The cardinal hopped to the ground and was joined by the female cardinal. They pecked at the seeds on the ground for a bit. She flew off and he followed. Always a good day when they show up.

3.National Grid showed up to put in the new meter for the solar panels. Himself switched on the solar panels. Now we need some sunshine.

4. Another breakfast date with Himself. As we were seating ourselves, the waitress brought a couple of menus and said: A tea and a Coke, right? Made me think of the TV show, Cheers: Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came. (source: http://www.lyricsondemand.com/tvthemes/cheerslyrics.html) 😸

5. There is radiant floor heating in the bathroom. A year or so ago, there was a power failure. When the electricity came back on the surge must have scrambled the heating control's brains. The read out was in Klingon instead of  English date and time. Fixing it was a low priority. There was the hassle of trying to find an electrician. Was the repair simple, just fix some wiring in the control? Or would the tile floor have to be ripped up? How much would it cost?

As I walked down the hall the day after the solar panels were turned on, the radiant floor heating control was back in English showing the date and time though the time was a half an hour slow. (About the same amount of time as it took the National Grid technician to turn off the electricity, install the new meter, and turn the electricity back on. Hmmm.)

I don't know if the rewiring of the electrical box for the solar panels fixed the problem or the floor somehow got wired into the solar panels. Whatever happened, I'm grateful the Little Princess no longer has to walk on cold tiles in the morning.

How was your week?

Dr. Strange

Another hit from Marvel Studios. Himself said Dr. Strange was his favorite Marvel comic book hero even if the comic book series was somewhat short lived. I had never heard of Dr. Strange. Great story. Marvel has such a way of showing the hero's struggle as he becomes. This is definitely worth your time though do see it in 3D if you can. An extra plus if you can see it in a Little Princess theater with reclining seats.

The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1. Playing around with the bells and whistles in my car. Used the GPS. Happily, this GPS has a warning ding-ding so you know where to make the turn. It also tells you which side of the road your deistination is on. The GPS in my other car didn't have these features.

2. A rainy, raw Saturday gave me the excuse to try the heated car seats. Mmmm, heavenly.

3. For Mother's Day, I got to indulge with Five Guys Little Bacon Cheeseburgers, coconut gelato, and chocolate dipped strawberries. No, I'm not spoiled (much) goodies just fit for a Little Princess

4. I got word that I'm enrolled in Reggie Ezell's year long calligraphy class 26 Seeds. Class starts March 2017. Can't wait.

5. New essential oil arrived. En-R-Gee.  Love the oily goodness.

How was your week?
