The Young One's graduation hoopla had me a little behind. This week 2 letters to catch up to finish the month of May.

Cinnamon Apples Recipe

 

For last week's Friday Five Good Things I mentioned I had made Cinnamon Apples. Iris asked for the recipe.

Follow the link to: Cinnamon Fried Apples. The recipe is easy. I don't chop the apples into bite-size pieces. I just sliced them. Iris, I know you don't like really sweet things, I suppose you could cut the amount of sugar.

Not only does this recipe pair nicely with pork, but it can also be a dessert or dessert topping for ice cream or pound cake.

While it's still Wed, today and last week's letter B and Z. B Sharpie markers over tissue paper. Z, Ziller Glossy Black with the ever faithful Nikko G, Pearl Ex pigments because I felt sparkly today.

A re-do of the letter S. The first one was a wax resist on a pale blue watercolor background. It didn't show up very well.

A letter for last week, and a letter for this week.  Word of the week is Whimsy. The W is from a decorative element in Timothy Noad's The Illuminated Alphabet. That's my go to book for inspiration.

No surprise that I'd figure out a way to work something to do with cowboys into this project. Colored with markers. The scan came out horrible, but I'm not in the mood to fight with it.

H is für den Herbst. Frauee, did I get the grammar correct? Herbst is Autumn in German. Yesterday, most of the leaves on the trees were still green. Today, lots of trees popped with color.  Watercolor pencil on mongrel paper from the scrap box.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere have your trees turned color?

More like Wed Letter. Spent Sat. afternoon in the sun room catching up.

Played with a few ideas. The V and U are traditional designs. The candle I usds the gold leafing pen flame as a resist. The S in the lower left doesn't show up well. It's a Copperplate S written with a candle which acts as a resist to the watercolor wash. The C was inspired from a Dover book of Art Nouveau initials. The idea for the Y came from friend, Bev. Doodling fun. Reminds me of playing cards.
I have enough letters to assemble another block.

The Gremlins Are At It Again

This reminded me of a trip to the eye doctor. What letter do you see? Now if I put this lens on, is it better or worse? Better or worse? One more time...

Yesterday, Linda asked:  Hey CJ, where have your letters of the week been? How many do you have finished? Will we see more?
As of today, I have 27 letters completed and 25 letters to go. The letters are being assembled into blocks. Four blocks have been completed. Yes, you'll see more letters. Hopefully, I will complete my letter for this week and will post as soon as the ink/paint dries.

And gravy = spaghetti sauce?
Then what do you put on turkey and mashed potatos? You probably already guessed it, but I'm not Italian.

 LOL gravy, of course (-; You would know which meaning depending on whether you were eating Italian food or "American" food. If we were having Thanksgiving dinner at my grandma's, I don't recall ever seeing turkey gravy on the table. She cooked a turkey, and I assume other trimmings, we just didn't eat the "American" Thanksgiving meal.  The feast began with chicken soup with rice, escarole,and little meatballs, antipasto, her signature home-made pasta (shaped like little hats) in red (tomato) gravy (home-made, never from a jar!) ,eggplant Parmigiana, meat which was probably the turkey, but no one bothered with it as we stuffed ourselves on the pasta, salad which signaled the end of the meal. Then there would be fruit and nuts which would give us a chance to rest before her special deep fried bow shaped cookies drizzled with honey, nougat candy from Italy, cake and a pie made from ricotta cheese (pizza dolce). Then it was time for leftover eggplant sandwiches.  Are you sorry you asked? :-D

Four Letter Words

The word is "ragu". Are the gremlins hungry? Are they hinting for me to make home-made gravy? (What non-Italians would call spaghetti sauce?)

We have gremlins in the house. Usually, they are fond of taking something and hiding it. I know where I left the item, but it is never there. They giggle as I go on a wild goose chase looking for the item. When my back is turned, they return the item to the very spot where I left it.

This time, the gremlins are amusing themselves making four letter words with the blocks I'm constructing as part of the Letter A Week in 2010 project.

I've seen boar, boat and this week boot.

Hard to believe this is the 26th week of this project. 26 letters down. 26 to go. Watercolor pencil, Schiminke gold watercolor and pigma pen.

Catching up. From the WPI schwag The Young One got from the Great Beginnings seminar. The school colors are crimson and grey. Cardinal Red Ziller ink on suminigashi paper (a scrap of Arches text wove)

What are you working on today?

For a change up, white on black. Ziller Winter White on black Canson Mi Tientes.

Before calligraphy took over, I used to cross-stitch, needlepoint, and a bit of crewel work. Thought it might be fun to include a needlework letter. Found the pattern at Tiny Bird Organics Colors were changed as I didn't have the suggested colors. Stitched on 14 count Aida using DMC Floss.

The pattern worked up quickly, in an hour and a half. I had forgotten how relaxing needlework could be. I used to stitch lots of gifts and for a time, stitched up samples for a woman who owned a needle shop in town. I'd get to choose the pattern and she'd supply the materials. Might have to dig out some of the old pattern books and work another small project. Have you gone back to an old past time?
