T Stands for Errand Day

Two weeks ago, Himself had the day off from school as it was finals week, and he didn't have a final exam scheduled. (If you're new to the blog or just forgot, Himself is a chemistry professor and teaches at a community college just outside of Boston)

One of his errands was to renew his driver's license and car registration. A trip to the Registry of Motor Vehicles is never fun. The state closed several offices so trying to find an office that is conveniently located, has adequate parking, and short lines and wait time can be difficult. Himself had heard that if one is a AAA (American Automobile Association) member, you can do license and registration renewal at AAA offices.

With the amount of running around to be done and the potential for waiting in lines, fortification was needed. As it turned out, the AAA office is close to Friendly's Family Restaurant and Ice Cream. During the week, Friendy's offers 50% off your entire breakfast. You can't go wrong with that.

Himself was a good sport and patiently waited while I photographe our breakfast.
We both ordered the Big Two-Do breakfast. Two eggs (we had them scrambled), 2 strips of bacon (me), 2 sausage (Himself) and we both had the French Toast. I had a cup of tea and since Himself doesn't like tea or coffee, he had a Coke (beverage of champions). By the time we got moving and out of the house, breakfast was really brunch.

After breakfast, we walked over to the AAA office. No one else was there to renew a license or registration, so the whole process was very quick. Himself had been thinking that keeping AAA membership for emergency road service was a waste of money. Most car dealers offered emergency roadside assistance for free. Himself decided that not waiting in line at the Registry was worth the price of membership.

The view from the office . Glad we didn't have to be there at night as the area wouldn't be well lit.

After AAA, Himself had to go pick up his CPAP machine which had been repaired. He uses the CPAP when he sleeps because he has sleep apnea. The office wasn't too far away from the restaurant and AAA, but it was in a desolate office park. There were tiny signs to direct you to the building, The building was locked up tighter than Fort Knox. One had to wait to be buzzed in and then forced to sit in a drab, dinky waiting area. It was a very creepy place.

On the return trip home, I asked if we could stop at Michael's craft store at the mall. I was looking for a small, portable cutting board to use for teaching workshops. I have two cutting boards, but both are big and bulky.
Wandering through the store, I saw the removable tape Reggie wants us to use in class. While at Staples I had purchased 3 rolls, so was happy to see Michael's also carried the tape as Michael's is closer

There were several cutting boards to choose from, and I spent a few minutes debating which to buy.

I finally decided on one that was a bit more expensive than I wanted to spend, but it also doubled as a scoring board, and I had a coupon for 40% off. The scoring tool stored in a slot on the side of the cutting board and the board folded in half which would take up less space in the tool bag.

After Micheal's, we stopped at Great Clips to get our haircut. The salon is two miles from the house and in the new shopping area (grocery store, 5 Guys Hamburgers, Starbuck's, nail salon, bank, dentist office) The hair salon was offering a $5.99 haircut special.

After our busy morning, it was time to go home to a well-deserved nap.

  1. Many of my friends have AAA and wouldn't give it up for the world. They like the convenience of getting a battery recharged or being towed up to 50 miles for free. We don't have the option of free roadside assistance, even when you purchase from the dealer. We live in the midwest, so rules aren't the same here (grin).

Both my friends Kathy and Sally use a CPAP. I am sure I don't have sleep apnea, because I can sleep through just about anything. I'm pretty sure I would know if I didn't get a good night's sleep due to not breathing. I heard you can "not" breath up to 40 times an hour and never feel like you've been to sleep. Not sure it's true, but it was a study done by some major university.

I wondered what a cutting board was. After you showed them, I realized it was a cutter. Mine is a guillotine, so I know it wouldn't fit in a tool kit. I have a Fiskars, but it is HUGE. I mean HUGE. I never use it, because it doesn't make sense to me. You got a great scoring tool out of it, though. I know that will come in handy.

Great Clips is much cheaper where you live. We pay $12.00 for adults like me and $10.00 for Seniors like Sally.

I want to go to YOUR breakfast. I'm in awe. That is my kind of bargain.

Thanks for sharing your time out and about, your incredible breakfast (now I'm starving) and your drinks with us for T this Tuesday.

    1. I pay extra for the 100 mile tow as I've been that far from home and got stuck. Too bad about the dealerships not offering roadside assistance for a new car for the first year or two.

The CPAP study is true. When Himself had the sleep study done, the tech woke him up after 1/2 an hour because Himself had stopped breathing 40 or 50 times. That was the diagnosis that lead to sleep apnea.

The new cutting board is working out well and the scoring board feature came in handy.

The $5.99 haircut was a special come-on as the salon is new and they are trying to woo customers. The regular haircut price is still reasonable at $14 or $15. compared to the salon across the highway where I used to go. I stopped when I was paying $40 for a haircut. Just a cut, mind you. No styling, no mousse. My hair is very short. Not much longer than Himself's hair. Himself only paid $20. Not fair to be over charged for the same thing. So I started going to another place similar to Great Cuts, but that was close to 1/2 hr away. Great Cuts is only 2 miles down the road.

Friendly's has a good breakfast. Can't beat that price. Only good during the week. Not on weekends.

  2. You had a fun day out. I didn't know about renewing your license at AAA. Good idea though, and I bet a lot of folks get a membership too. My hubby has a CPAP machine also. I like that he doesn't snore but when his mouthpiece gets moved slightly off his face it sounds like a hurricane next to me and keeps me awake, so I am not sure it solves my sleeping or not. But it does help him which is good. And I love seeing your trip though Michaels. Always good to see what is out there.Oh yes, and my hubby is a great clips guy too. HMMM. I know we aren't married to the same man but they do sound a bit a like. In some small ways. Happy T day. Hugs-Erika

    1. It was a nice day spent together. I hope I don't jinx no lines or waiting for license renewal by blabbing about AAA. Everyone will sign up and the lines will be just as long as the Registry!

The CPAP has been my lifesaver. Before it, I would end up sleeping on the floor in the living room or in a chair in the basement. There are times if his mask is not seated properly, it is like a wind tunnel or the mask sings which is funny. For the most part, it's quiet and we both get some sleep.

  3. What a packed day-but enjoyable too! Glad your hubby made good time and choice at the DMV-they sure are a headache to go to. I think you may now be able to do something online. Great breakfast to gear you up for the rest of the day. Who doesn't love a trip to Michael's?? Happy T day!

    1. Every other time, you can renew your license online. This time, he needed a new photo so had to show up in person.

I would have stayed longer in Michael's but Himself was waiting in the car.

    2. Wow, you sure packed a lot into one day. The breakfast looks great, and even better that you didn't need to wait to renew the license. You got good bargains at Michael's, and the haircut was a great price. The cheapest cut I can get here is 20€. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

    3. Lots of breakfast choices at Friendly's. All good. The $5.99 haircut was a special offer. The regular price is close to what you pay including a tip.

  5. I didn't know you could renew licenses at the AAA office! Good info.
I also didn't realize your HH was a CC instructor. I'm sure I've mentioned before that I retired from a CC, the HH is getting ready to retire from the same one and both kids work at CCs. One in a different part of the state. One in Philly. I hope your state has been more generous with their raises than NC.

    1. No, I didn't know you taught at a CC or your hubs. I think teaching at CC must be the same everywhere. Half the time the profs work at teach to rule because they are usually 2 or 3 years into a contract before the contract is negotiated. Whatever gets put in their left pocket, gets taken out of the right

  6. What a fabulous bargain day! The breakfast looks great especially for the price! My son's partner sleeps so much better now he has the monitor (didn't know it was called a cpap) Good to get a discount on your haircuts too! Happy T day! Chrisx

  7. What you have to go through to renew a driver's license in Boston sounds very much like what we have to go through in Mexico, CJ. But we have to do it in our second language - lol.

You planned it out, just like we do here. Expect the worst and you won't be disappointed. A little pre-battle fortification at Friendly's never hurts. And thank goodness for AAA! Wish we had that here ;-)

Coke - beverage of champions - love that line, even though i'm trying to break (or moderate) my Coke habit.

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen
