Throwback Thursday - The Notebooks

Video; Feast of St. Agrippina - North End, Boston, Massachusetts

I recall having a little cart that I had on the piazza and I would run with it and slam it at the door, it made a noise and I kept this up and my mother would get tired of hearing the bang. She would call Stop! I didn't.

I also at this period crawled on the piazza one day and I didn't watch what I was doing and as I put my hand down I put it on top of a nail that was in a board and my had went down on it and out the top. Mother panicked but I pulled it out. Went to the Relief Station.

I was sitting on the window sill rocking myself I went out too far and landed on the piazza floor. Got a split head and was taken to the hospital actually the Relief Station.

My mother was with me and the doctor wanted to put stitches in and she would not let him do it. I got a bandage.

It would not be my last visit I would need first aid and as I grew up and did foolish things.

I began to acknowledge my brothers and sisters but for the most part, I was a loner.

Holidays were observed and aunts and uncles would be invited.

Summers were nice and there were two or three fiestas with bands. Started on a Saturday with the band marching and each fiesta was in honor of a saint. The neighborhood was Italian, but they came from different parts of Italy. Italy is made up of 22 different people who were brought under one ruler by a general named Garibaldi. His reason that they would do better economically if they were a nation.

The fiesta started on Saturday and ended on Monday when the band at about 9:30 would come down from the bandstand and march a couple of blocks to the park and watch the fireworks. Besides shooting them up in the air, as you see them today, they also had those that lit and would be a work of art as it displayed a figure, or flower, and last by the flags. Italian and American. Each was a work of art.

Also during this short period there would be a display of Italian cookies, pizza, etc. for sale. They were nice times.

    1. I've never been to a North End feast, but was there either before or just after St. Agrippina's Feast in 2009. A friend from Iowa was visiting, and we were walking the Freedom Trail. The crown decorations were up in the North End streets.
