The Fur Pig

We have a new visitor to the yard. The critter is a woodchuck (ground hog, fur pig, marmot) named Woody (very original)

Several years ago, we had a woodchuck that lived under the shed. He was pretty hefty, and I suspect he became coyote chow.

Woody is not as hefty as the previous Woody. He looks to be the same size as Ink. He has a cute, lumbering hop-run, but can move toot sweet for a chub.

What's in your yard?

  1. I think ground hogs are so cute. Unfortunately, the one in our back yard several years ago feasted incessantly on my tulip bulbs. Had to give up on the tulips and only grow daffodils.

    1. Yeah, the bunnies got the zillion tulip bulbs I planted. No there's only the daffs.

  2. He's so cute! We have Pterodactyls (Pelicans) Mermaids (manatees) Florida chickens (Ibis) Geckos, snakes, hawks, burrowing owls…….not to mention the mocking bird that wakes me up every morning at 4:30 AM….but I digress….

  3. I realize you posted this in 2015, but I just noticed it on your sidebar. I have a woodchuck, too. (I think they hibernate in the winter, because I haven't seen mine in awhile.) I also have chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, birds, and coyotes. I don't usually see the coyotes. They travel in packs but are stealthy. Oh, and an adorable red fox, but I rarely see him. And how could I forget the deer? They eat the bird seed out of my bird feeder, which is pretty nervy of them. I call them rats with antlers (because we have an overpopulation of them, and they eat all of my flowers).

    1. I hear the coyotes at night during the Summer. I did see a coywolf run through the yard one time. He was big, fast, and I have no idea what he was chasing. I've seen an occasional fox, but the deer are elusive. I know they are in the area, but I rarely see them.

  4. I also just noticed this: you should repost for Groundhog Day today! Do you still have groundhogs?

    1. I haven't seen the groundhogs for a few years now. Several packs of coyotes have been around town as well as a bobcat. I have a feeling Woody became coyote chow.
