T Stands For Krispy Kreme

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of hype about Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. How to die for they are. While grocery shopping with the Eldest, we came across a box of Krispy Kreme Boston Cream Pie doughnuts. The Eldest indulged me and bought a box for Saturday morning breakfast. I couldn't wait to try them. A fluffy doughnut stuffed with custard cream and topped with chocolate frosting.

The results? Where’s the creme or the cream?

And the cream wasn’t the nice vanilla, custard cream but the overly sweet frosting. The verdict: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are overrated. Dunkin' Donuts are way better.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  1. Sorry you were so disappointed with the donuts, I wonder why people make such a hype when they don't live up to their name? I haven't had donuts in ages, thanks for the reminder, must wander past the bakery tomorrow! They have wonderful ones filled with eggnog, yummy! Hugs, Valerie

  2. We had that hype here a couple of years ago when the first Krispy Kreme came north to our area. I am with you. The hype wasn't all equal to the taste. But I am shocked how little creme is in the donut. I can't believe they sell a donut and call it a Boston cream if they don't stuff it with cream. Those are my hubby's favorite. Happy Tuesday and T day. hugs-Erika

    1. If you notice, they aren't called Boston Cream donuts, but Chocolate Iced Donuts with Kreme Filling. Being the week before the Super Bowl and the Philadelphia Eagles the favorite team here, there is no mention of Boston anywhere. I've been careful about mentioning where I'm from. Sports fans can be rabid. Go Pats! =^,.^=

  3. I went to Krispy Kreme right after they opened in Wichita. I was NOT impressed, either. I watched as they went through the ovens, etc. I ordered six donuts and I thought they tasted like they had been cooked in fish oil. So I agree that they aren't worth all the hype. Thanks for sharing these and your tea with us for T this Tuesday.

BTW, in response to your comment: What did they have for dessert instead of pie?

It appears the women of the church made different types of sheet cakes and cut them up in about 2 inch squares. Could be why there was no pie, since the cakes were so small, it would be hard to cut a pie that small and disproportionate.

Had to laugh at what you said about the sewer plate. It's not a face, but the symbol of my city. It's really a W for Wichita. The crooked smile is actually the two rivers that meander through the city. The sunburst is a reference to the Wichita Indians (yes, that is the name of their tribe).

    1. Too bad they didn't think of making individual pies in muffin tins.

I know the W was for Wichita, but it looked like a face to me :-D I didn't know Wichita was the name of a tribe. Just like my state (technically a commonwealth) was named after the Massachusett one of the Algonquian tribes

    2. I had no idea about the name of your commonwealth being one of the Algonquian tribes. I learn something new each Tuesday.

  4. when I was really young growing up at home we had a krispy cream near us my father loved that place. I remember liking the donuts with all the glaze on it-they would make me really really sick now. I did get the opportunity years later to watch them being made was pretty fun to watch them on the big machines-but they were always so greasy too
I see them being sold here in the grocery stores-they remind me of my childhood but they were never that good
    Happy T Day Kathy

    1. I suppose nothing is as good as the memories from childhood.

I think it would be fun to to see the dounuts being made, but I'll pass on them next time

  5. Never had a krispy kreme -mostly because I heard what you have discovered and I don't like things so sweet. But, now give me a good Boston Cream and I'd be quite happy to enjoy a treat:) Happy T day!

    1. Wish I had a good donut now. My favorite is Bavarian Cream. Like a Boston Cream, but without the chocolate ganache and generously dusted with powdered sugar

  7. We can get Krispy Kreme donuts over here but I'm not a fan. I much prefer Dunkin' Donuts too, especially the pumpkin pie ones which are so yummy ...lol 😉. It's a good job that we can't get them over here though otherwise they'd feature on all my T Day posts ...lol 😀. Wishing you a Happy T Day! J

  8. I agree with you completely. I'm a big fan of whatever locally-owned donut shop there is. We have a local favorite and avoid the chains like the plague. I feel for you not having a local source. That said, I've had Dunkin Donuts, and I liked them fine. We're just spoiled for choice here.

  9. CJ, Dunkin Donuts are horrendous. The only time Krispy Kreme are any good is when they are made hot and fresh in the shop. You want a decent donut-- surprisingly Cumberland Farms has them. You want a good donut? Donut Kitchen in Holden or Dippin' Donuts. You want an amazing donut? Blue Star in Portland Oregon-- worth the drive and now you're almost halfway there when you visit the eldest.

    1. Wait, I thought the must have donuts in Portland, Oregon were VooDoo Donuts.

  10. we bought them and the supermarket too to try and my sons didnt think much of them...overhyped we prefer the cheaper jam doughnuts in the supermarket

  11. I was really thinking that the doughnuts sounded delicious with the custard filling and then as I read more of your post, I could imagine your disappointment.
Still you tried them and I'm sure won't be buying anymore.
    Happy T day wishes.

    1. Fortunately, we don't have Krispy Kremes where I live. In Massachusetts, it's Dunkin' Donuts born in Quincy, Massachusetts

  13. Phew! My blood sugar rose all by itself just thinking about donuts until I read what you said about them - how disappointing! I have tried Krispy Kremes but never Dunkin Donuts (which I guess must only be in the US) Strangely, if I want a treat at the weekend, donuts have the least sugar of all cakes, even with cream and jam - although I usually take most of the jam off. When we used to go to the seaside as a child there used to be a donut stall - now there was a donut!! In answer to your question - yes Lincoln Green was indeed the the cloth used for Robin Hood's clothing - so they say! Sherwood Forest is around 30miles away so not such along walk!!! At the time Lincoln was famous for it's cloth - especially Lincoln Scarlet. Happy T day! Chrisx

    1. I didn't find the donut greasy. Just very little cream and way too sweet

  15. Haha! This made me laugh. Where's the cream? In my opinion one can never have too much cream. The best cream filled donuts I have ever had came from a local bakery. Yum!!

  16. CJ, I agree with you! When they first came to Canada, there was line ups! Well, they don't exist in Canada anymore! LOL! But, I have to say, we tried several of their donuts, all the different flavoured ones, were yucky, but the "original" ones, are good!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, and they have to be fresh and hot! But, like I said, only their original "glazed" donut.

    1. Didn't see any of the glazed donuts. Though they would have been boxed and cold.

  18. I'm not a Krispy Kreme fan either, CJ. I figure any bakery made in a factory is more fillers and preservatives than food. With the exception of Entenmann's ;-)

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen

    1. I haven't had Entenmann's products for long time. The girlies loved their chocolate chip cookies.

  19. Don't look like they are really good -we have our fresh baked Vanillekrapfen or Krapfen filled with Apricot- marmalade. Thea are always fresh from the bakery ------- too delicious!
