Before heading home from our trip to Ogunquit at the end of June, Teague and I stopped in Wells, Maine at a Dunkin' Donuts for breakfast. I got a Chai Tea Latte and a Boston Cream donut shaped like a starfish. Too cute.
We stopped for lunch at a Friendly's in Marlborough, Massachusetts. There aren't many of these sandwich/ice cream shops left. The one thing about being a Weeble (old person) is getting discounts. Friendly's has a Weeble menu featuring a few smaller sized sandwiches, and the sandwich comes with a Happy Ending sundae. Just a small scoop of ice cream, topping of your choice (hot fudge, caramel, strawberry) and whipped cream. I had cookie dough ice cream and hot fudge and forgot to take a picture.

DeleteFun donut. And my thoughts as I was reading was you found a Friendlies. Then you said how there weren't many left. I know there's one in Concord, NH, but all the other I know of are gone. Which is sad because I spent a lot of teenage years visiting one and it's is a place I never minded going. Your lunch looks good. Have a great T day.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of us spent a lot of time at Friendly's. The one we stopped at was in Marlborough on Rt20. I think the problem they had was trying to compete with some of the other chain restaurants. They started offering steak tip dinners and stuff. People didn't want to spend the $$ for food at a hamburger/sandwich/ice cream shop. They should have stuck to their original formula because it worked. Stay cool today
DeleteI hear you about being a weebie (new term to me!). I get my senior coffee at McDonald's when I'm the road. Friendly used to a favorite years ago. Remember Brigham's? I've had many a good lunch there in Boston.
ReplyDeleteWeeble. Like the toy from 1970s, 1980s. Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down. Teague and I always like Brigham's better than Friendly's. That's another ice cream/sandwich shop that went the way of the dinosaurs

I love hearing about nostalgic stops like Friendly’s. It brings back so many warm memories.
Friendly's was a great place to get relatively inexpensive eats and ice cream. Too bad so many of the shops were closed

Just this morning Mike tells me how Starfish have eyes at the end of their "legs"...I tell him I have to look for my starfish photos I took way back on one of our many visits to the central coast. We were walking along the shoreline when I saw the tide pool and took quite a few photos. So a minute ago I'm looking in my photos for the Starfish. So then I come here and you mentioned Starfish.

ReplyDeleteFriendlies is a funny name, though. I studied in Hildesheim, people are rather unfriendly there and each and every Christmas they had the slogan "The friendly Hildesheimers".

I remember one Christmas the whole Coca Cola trucks drove by the Christmas market! And NONE of us had a camera!!! SH....T!! On the other hand you could concentrate on "the magic"...
