T Stands For - The Advent Tree

One of the traditions we had when the girlies were little, was counting down the days to Christmas with an Advent tree. Each day, one of the girlies would choose a tiny ornament from a wooden box to place on the tree. Who went first was determined by even and odd birthday. The Young One's birthday falls on an odd day of the month while The Eldest's birthday is conveniently on an even day. It also helped that there is a four year age difference between them so The Eldest was more patient about not going first.

The days of choosing an ornament have long past for them. I'm now the Keeper of the Tradition, if I remember to get the Advent tree out by the 1. December.

I also try to use the Christmas dishes, a gift from a cherished friend, through the month. I have to confess that after drinking my tea out of a mug the rest of the year, the dainty, tea cups aren't quite substantial enough.

So, what ornament did we pick for St. Nicholas' Day? Aww, a tiny, snow man.

Only 19 days left until Christmas. Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang are up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  4. We started a few traditions for our family since the ones we each grew up with didn't really mesh. I'm so glad to have our own to pass down to our kids.
    Happy T day!

    1. The Christmas traditions I grew up with revolved around food. So it's nice to have something of our own. Thanks for the visit.

  5. I love family traditions like yours. We have a few, but I'm afraid when I'm gone they will be gone too. The next generation doesn't seem to like the old traditions as much.
    Happy T-day

    1. The tablecloth also has cardinals and chickadees perched on the holly. The tablecloth belonged to my mother. She gave it to me when we moved into the house and started hosting family holidays. Happy St. Nicholas Day to you!

  7. I love your advent tree. I made my own one year, and it's in the shape of a tree. I made it using jewelry boxes and placed something "mixed media" in each of the boxes. I love your tradition. I have no traditions in my home, other than decorating my home the day after Thanksgiving. That resulted from years and years in school while working full time, and was the only time I had to get it all together.

I am SO glad you shared this tradition with us for T this Tuesday. I think traditions are a good thing, especially when they involve family. Now if I could only interest Bleubeard!

    1. Glad I could be of service. The angels are actually a music box. The girl angel remains stationary. The boy angel is the music box. As he passes by the girl, he gives her a kiss. The music box plays the theme from the movie, Love Story. Sadly, the music box no longer plays

  10. I love the idea of an advent tree. What a great memory for all of you. Its better than the candy advent calendars, which are yummy but not as memory making. :) Hugs-Erika

    1. The problem with the candy calender is the girlies never would have gotten the chocolate with me standing by :-D

  11. Such a welcoming looking home. I smiled when I saw the kissing couple on the table. My Mom had a similar couple (blue and white and no wings) that always sat in her kitchen window. It now sits in my daughters kitchen window. Nice memories

  15. Traditions are lovely. Your tree and Christmas dinnerware are very sweet.

I just got out the Christmas quilt my sister-in-law (no longer with us) made for us over 25 years ago. For Advent when our son was young, I did something non-traditional that became our tradition. I made a paperr chain from Christmas wrap and strung it on the banister. Each link had a surprise inside. Every morning during Advent he could remove a link, enjoy the treat, coupon, money, etc. inside and watch the chain shorten as Christmas Day approached. Your post brought back fond memories ;-)

    Happy T Day, CJ.
