Tea Stands for Drolleries

Today, some of the students in my class will be learning about Drolleries. The drolleries are doodles or drawings in the margins of some medieval manuscripts.

They usually involved animals doing human things. A famous drollery is a rabbit knight riding a snail to a joust. The drawings are fun and some of them quite rude. Perhaps the drawings were done to alleviate boredom, to make political commentary, or hallucinations from mushrooms or Ergot poisoning.

"Border decoration showing a cat seated at a table laid with fish in blue dishes, attended by large mice servants. Missal, England, mid-15th century (Bodl., Laud Misc, 302, F.210)" There is also a goblet on the table which is the drink reference for the post.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  1. I knew about the illustrations along the edges of these manuscripts, but I didn't know their name. Thanks for the new word. And Ha ha, those servants better be careful or maybe that kitty won't have had enough to eat and those mice will become dessert. :) It can't possibly be snow later today with the way the sun is shining right now. But perhaps you will get rain.

    1. Himself's computer weather app said 6 inches of snow! 😱 Weather is saying starting out as a mix, maybe a bit of ice before changing to rain. I was just outside filling the bird feeders. It sure feels and smells like snow

    1. Yes, but only because I was up to feed the kitties. I saw a bit of the eclipse, Earth's shadow across the face of the moon. The window to see the Blood Moon was very small as the moon was setting and the trees obscured the horizon. So I didn't get to see it live.

  3. It's good to see humour and comment from times past. and to know there was a lighter side to the serious business of life.

  5. Thank you for teaching me a new word! What a fun little detail. Are those mice? They could be dogs too actually. Anyway, whatever, it's fun.

  9. Sorry I'm late visiting. I scheduled too many things on Tuesday, starting with voting. Gone till late evening, then wiped out.

I was fascinated by the images and even more so that you taught me a new word for T this Tuesday, dear CJ.
