Whatcha Doin?

Seems Old Man Winter is going to rear his ugly head. My area is under a Winter Storm Advisory of mixed precipitation. Total snow accumulation of 2 inches and ice accumulation of around 1/4 inch.

While the snow is a pain in the ass. The ice accumulation is a worry. At that thickness, tree and power lines could come down.

Fortunately, the solar panels will charge the solar battery backup so in case of power failure. But I have a superstition that if I go through the process of storm preparation (mainly filling some buckets of water so we can flush the toilet. Before the solar battery, no electricity meant no power to the well pump and no way to flush the toilet), then we won't lose electricity or lose it for very long.

Whatcha doin?

  1. NO sympathy from me if you're only predicted to get 2 inches. I'm in the 6-12-AUGH! And we still have that dirty gross leftovers on the ground already. Let's hope the storm fizzles and neither of us get any. Fingers crossed for some kind of weather miracle.

  2. We nearly hit 90 F yesterday! We went fishing... the fish weren't fooled .. its still Winter.. didn't have a nibble much less a bite.. Today is in the high 70's with 50 mph wind gusts.. I think while your having your Winter Storm we are going to be in the 50's.. Stay warm and safe CJ. Hugs! deb

  3. I have that same superstition! That's why (after Ian) we had a Generlink installed (an easier way to set up a generator rather than have a million extension cords all over the place!) Got a 'wind up' radio, USB powered (can plug into the generator) lights, and a TV antennae so we can have some contact with the outside world! I'm working on the theory if I'm prepared for the absolute WORST it won't be so bad! I'll let you know how it goes......🤷

    1. We have the solar battery backup and it will keep us going if we don't get a ton of snow on the solar panels. I have the dynamo radio, a flashlight, a bunch of battery operated lanterns, one in each room (no candles with the ktties), a power pack to recharge cellphones. I even cleaned off the flat file in the kitchen (aka the kitchen table) so I can put these items on the table and find them easily if needed.

  5. wow u have a lot more problems than we do with losing power. Nice you have solar you can use. But the bathroom, water thing.with being on a well..ugh. Hope the storm goes easy on you. Ice is definitely the thing we dread up here.

  6. You have it worse than I have it. I am under a weather WATCH, less scary than the weather WARNING.

If I lose electricity, I also lose my heater and my water heater, both of which have electric starts. I DO have water, since I'm on city water, but it would be too cold to bathe in.

I plan ahead by having cheese and crackers and tuna salad. And I always make at least a full pot of coffee in advance, since I am addicted to caffeine. I have two warm fur babies to snuggle with, too. I just hope both of us dodge the bullet.

    1. We're in a weather advisory. Yes, part of storm prep includes foods that don't need any preparation. Like Boston Cream Pie 😉

  8. Since forever I want to pack such an emergency kit and always forget. Here we never lost electricity. If we did I would not be prepared. And the toilet. Oh. Never thought of that! Would take forever to fill a bucket...

    1. Since you live in the city, you are most likely on the city water supply so wouldn't lose your water if the electricity went out. I live in a rural community. We get our water from a well on our property. No electricity means no electricity to power the pump at the bottom of the well to pump water into the house
