T Stands For Tea

Blog post from April 15, 2010 and one of my favorite pictures of Ink:

With lousy weather, feeling crummy, and schedules finally syncing schedules, my friend, Red, was able to come over for tea. Several months back over steaming mugs of tea, Red mentioned she was looking for a china teapot. How she would love to use the china. Got me thinking because I have several teapots, china cups, and a china tea set which belonged to my mother. She  gave the tea set to me a few years ago. These items live in a curio cabinet and are not used. I thought setting the table with the china would seem pretentious. On the other hand, it seemed a shame not to use the fine china.

Ma bought the tea set when she first moved to the house where I grew up. She wanted something nice to have to serve the ladies tea. She found the tea set at Jordan Marsh. Most likely it was on sale as Ma was keen for the thrill of the hunt. The china is Rosenthal and the pattern is Caprice. Delicate ivory cups with pink dogwood and yellow forsythia blossoms. (I'd have preferred blue forget-me-nots) Ma worked so afternoon tea with the ladies didn't happen, but she used the set whenever we had company.

I set the table with the tea set, pretty dishes, and linen napkins. Baked a non-traditional Irish Soda bread. We ate, gossiped, laughed, and sipped tea from the pretty cups.  With Ink hopping up to check out the goodies, it was almost like being 6 yrs old and having a tea party with imaginary friends.

Do you use your fine china or best dishes only when you have company?

  2. Very sweet memories of Ink! And your friend.
Nah, you would not want me over. Elephant in a China store... I have my Tea-Rex and am super-mega-extra-careful!
I prefer bamboo or plastic or anything unbreakable... Happy T-Day!

  3. I got China when I got married, and I didn't really want it either. I really wanted these cool everyday dishes which I would save for best events, but everyone was against me. I ended up with china which now sits wrapped in newspaper in a big box in basement. I feel bad about not using it, but it isn't dishwasher safe and we are just not formal people. Maybe one day I will pull it out. My MIL has like 4 sets of china from all her relatives, and of course no one wants it either. BUT, saying all this, your table looks lovely and I think having a formal tea is really fun. And I love seeing Ink peeking over the table. Do you think he wanted tea-ha ha. Thanks for sharing and have a great T day.

    1. I didn't really want the china or crystal either, but like you had to cave. Yup, no one wants the fancy dishes. Ink was hoping for a crumb of the cake. He had a sweet tooth.

  7. What a fantastic memory. YES, I save my good china and such (I have five sets of wonderful china) for company. I/m prone to be a klutz and break good china.

Thanks for sharing this retrospective post with us for T this Tuesday, dear CJ.

  8. Very pretty. My mum had cups like that. It was nice that you used these china cups for a special occasion, a long awaited visit from your friend.
No, I do not use china cups. I have large glass cups (from Ikea) for my tea and I have thermal glasses for my coffee. Everything is dishwasher safe, so 'happy days'.
    Happy T-Day,
    Lisca

  10. How lovely. I wish I could come for tea. I use only one set of dishes, my good ones. When we became empty nesters almost 30 years ago, I decided we only needed one set of dishes. I got rid of the others. Until then, I always had every day and goo dishes. Happy T Dya.
