T Stands for Westward, Ho!

So we packed up the car. I thought the car looked like she was screaming. No more! No more stuff! But everything fit. The Eldest's little Prius is a TARDIS

I had suggested we take two cars. We could take more stuff, and I would have easy transportation home. The Eldest didn't want to drive down by herself, and truth be told, neither did I. The entire trip takes about 9 hours, and a bit longer with comfort, gas, and food stops. The first trip we took when we went apartment hunting, took us 11 hours. She decided she wanted to break the trip into two travel days. So we planned on stopping after 4.5 hours of drive time in Wilkes-Barre.

The Eldest waved good-bye to the house, and we were off.

Barely an hour or so away from home, and we had to take a comfort break. Who knew Connecticut could be so long?

Once again, we stopped at the Cracker Barrel in Fishkill, New York, about 3 hours away, and just a perfect stop for lunch. Easy off, easy back on the highway. I had the unsweetened iced tea with lemon and she had her favorite Foo-Foo Lahdidah, aka Latte with chocolate and whipped cream.

While waiting for our meal, I was content to bask in the warmth and glow of the hearth. Very homey. Very country. And then I noticed the fire wasn't real logs burning, but a gas fire! Illusions shattered.

Usually when I go to Cracker Barrel, I order breakfast. They serve breakfast all day long, and you can get breakfast with grits. Mmmmm. A student of mine had said she loved the bacon at Cracker Barrel so she always ordered a BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato). That sounded real good, but I couldn't find it on the menu. I asked the waitress if they had a BLT. She said they did, but it wasn't on the menu. You had to ask. Maybe it's some secret BLT club. Either way, it was delicious. The Eldest had the Bacon Cheeseburger.

Crossing the Hudson River over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, New York. You can see just under the guardrail of the barrier on the right hand side, the right side of the river is still frozen.

Notice no snow!

Crossing the border from New York to Pennsylvania and greeted by the sign. And a reminder, especially for The Eldest: Pursue Your Happiness

Higher terrain as we got into the Poconos Mountains.

I'm not the only one dreaming of Summer weather. A very large boat was being towed by a very large flat bed, truck. Someone was getting a fun toy.

The Choice hotel was clean, roomy, and a welcome break.

The view from our room. There was a Perkins Restaurant beyond the portico. But we decided to stay and have dinner at Pickles Pub in the hotel.

When we got downstairs, we walked into the small bar. Not many people were there. Four truck driver types. Two fellas sitting together at the bar. Another fella, a few bar stools away, and the last fella sitting at a table finishing his dinner. The bartender was a very perky redhead.

We sat down at a table by the wall near the bar where the two fellas were sitting. I decided I wouldn't take any photographs as the bar was tiny and no way not to get other people in the picture. The bar tender/waitress brought us menus. I ordered a Coke. The Eldest, as young women her age, likes to have a cocktail. She scanned the bottles along the bar and said "Oooh, they have fixings for an Apple-tini (vodka, apple juice, or apple brandy, or apple cider, and a cherry.) The Eldest pulled out her ID because even though she's in her late 20s, she looks like she's 14.

The bartender scanned the ID, and went to mix the cocktail, and asked The Eldest what kind of vodka she wanted in her drink. Ketel or Grey Goose. The Eldest was trying to decide when, the younger of the two fellas sitting at the bar told her to order the Ketel. He said it was real smooth. So on his recommendation, the Eldest ordered the Ketel.

I had a sip of the Appletini. Not bad. I'm not much one for mixed drinks as I prefer sweet, white wines. There wasn't a big selection on the menu. Hamburgers, fish, and chips. We ordered fish and chips for dinner which were quite good.

Now, in a small room, it's hard not to overhear conversations. The two guys sitting together were chatting up the bartender. She was chatty and flirty. She was also wearing an Eagles tee-shirt.

The Philadelphia Eagles football team and the New England Patriots (the team from my state) are set to square off in the Superbowl Championship on 4. February. Himself had said Philly fans are rabid. In fact, the Chief of Police or some official had ordered that the light poles in Philadelphia be greased so fans couldn't climb the poles whether the Eagles win or lose. We decided if anyone asked where we were from we would say

The bartender was a good hostess and eventually included everyone in conversation. The two fellas at the bar were subcontractors for Verizon cell towers. Worked on the ground and said the guys working on top of the towers don't get paid enough.  Conversation turned to where are you from, and I told the bartender she wouldn't like the answer. She laughed. Said a gentleman from Boston came into the bar and was asking about apartments. She was making fun of the Boston accent as we have a habit of dropping the R sound so apartment is pronounced A-paht-ment. She said she couldn't understand a word he said. She claimed she could do a good Boston accent. Asked how she did and everyone laughed. Not even close.

We had to be on the road at 7AM to make it to the Eldest's apahtment (=^,.^=) in time to meet the cable guy to hook up Internet so we got up to leave. The older of the two fellas asked me if we'd like to join them at the bar. Thanks, but an early morning. Yup, I still got it.

The journey continues next week.

  1. Must have been such a nice road trip. There are a lot of things one can remember from such an adventure -most especially the company. I liked that Pennsylvania sign...Pursue Your Happiness!

    1. The road trip was a transition for the Eldest and me. Time for me to let go of her hand, and her to let go of mine. The sign was a validation that this is the right move for The Eldest.

  2. What a fun trip you had, I very much enjoyed the story of your evening in the bar and the 'apahtment'. It's nice to get into contact with strangers and enjoy time together. Have a great T Day, keep having fun, hugs, Valerie

    1. It was a nice trip spending time with The Eldest. Seeing her as an adult and not a wet-behind-the-ears kid.

I was surprised how friendly everyone was. I'm not sure that camaraderie would be felt back home. As a general rule, New Englanders can be cold.

  3. Wow what a trip - in our country we can cross from one end to the other during 6 hours or so....
And I can imagine that it was a great experience to have that trip together with your Eldest! I have just one child - my daughter starts with her driving licence this summer...I am not looking forward to have car trips with her then.... grrr.

    Happy T-Day !

    1. It was fun spending time with her. I was a little nervous when she was driving. Part of the change to see her as an adult. She did fine. Your daughter will do well, too. Just remember to breathe!

  7. Reminds me of the time a guy at the Holiday Inn tried to pick my mother up! We had just come from my grandmother's funeral and we were relaxing at the bar. BigBro was incensed! LOL Sounds like it was a nice trip and a smooth transition for both of you. :)

  9. An adventure! Such fun, and an exciting time in both your lives. I like Cracker Barrel and have enjoyed everything I've tried there. Gas logs are fine with me ;) It's cozy anyway. I got a kick out of the Doctor Who reference :) Happy T Tuesday

    1. I was all for the rustic ambiance and though they burned real logs. So finding out they have a gas fireplace, which probably makes more sense, was for me O-:

  10. I realize I'm late visiting. I was up all night and slept in today. I'm STILL waiting to know if you got that cook book at Cracker Barrel. Likewise, i also appreciated the Doctor Who reference.

I really enjoyed this phase of your trip to PA. Of course by now, we all know who won the Super Bowl, so I won't go into that. Go LAKERS!

Thanks for sharing this leg of your trip and drinks with us for T this Tuesday.

    1. :-D I forgot to include the cookbook story in this post!

I did not watch the Superbowl. Championship games get to intense for me. Himself said it was a good game. The Pats played well, but the Eagles were better. this time. =^,.^=

  11. What a fun and interesting adventure! I am not looking forward to my children driving or moving away but I know it will happen someday soon. PA is a wonderful state. I can say that because I was born, raised and am currently living here. I also lived in New York for 9 years so those welcome to PA signs look very familiar.
Looking forward to hearing the rest of your adventure.
    Happy Tea Day,
    Kate

    1. I wish she wasn't 500 miles away from home, but young ones must go where the work is. The area she is in is very small, town. Her apartment is very nice. The landlord is a gem and the people in the area are friendly. I think she's in a very nice place to live.

  12. really good idea to break up the trip! interesting to read about your stop at the restaurant...you never know what conversations you will overhear, and whether or not you wished you hadn't heard it! lol. good luck to your daughter and the unpacking...love that her car is like the TARDIS! too funny...happy T day!

    1. Her car is really like the TARDIS. Bigger on the inside :-D

  13. Sounds like an adventurous move. But luckily a smooth move. And I thought the Tardis comparison was great. I remember I had a Toyota Tercel many years and I could pack it up with so many things when I moved. Of course you needed a seat too. Did you manage to move everything? You must miss your daughter and hopefully it's not too hard. Happy belated T day. Hugs-Erika

    1. The move went very smoothly. Everything that she packed I managed to fit in the car. We had a couple of big shopping trips down there for her to buy stuff she needed: microwave, toaster oven, washing machine.

I do miss her. It's a little quieter. And she would sometimes cook dinner. And there's no one to watch Food Porn (aka cooking shows like Chopped, Worse Cooks,) We did text a couple of times and I talked to her yesterday because she needed some info employment paperwork

  14. What an adventure! So great that you could start it off together. Doing a road trip with a person usually strengthens the relationship (or totally ruins it!).
You write so beautifully and make it sound like a novel. I'm looking forward to the next bit. There must be a good few instalments to look forward to.
The hotel restaurant sounds like a friendly place. I don't think the chap that invited you had particularly bad intentions. Truck drivers often just want some company other than fellow truckers.
Yes, BLTs are great. The English fore runner of this is called a 'bacon butty', which are just two slices of white bread with butter and bacon. In the north of England they would pronounce it: bacon botty, lol
Although I live in Spain, I have heard the results of the superbowl. No more said.
    Happy belated T-day,
    Lisca

    1. So, that's what a bacon butty is. I've heard of it, but didn't know what it was. Bacon and butter sandwich. That makes sense. And as to the Superbowl. Better luck next year.
