Himself and I have been sharing the never ending cold from Hell. We've been this way since the middle of December. You think you start to feel better and wham! Stuffy nose, feeling tired and blah. At least this time around we're not coughing up our souls.
I thought I'd try to give the cold the heave-ho by brewing some elderberry tea. I got the recipe here. The recipe is very simple. Just 3 ingredients and you can customize it for your taste. You will need:
2 cups of water
2 T. of dried elderberries
cinnamon stick. (I didn't have a cinnamon stick so I used a teaspoon of ground cinnamon)
You can customize the recipe to your taste. I added 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves.
Bring the elderberries and spices to a boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Take your pan off the heat to cool for 5 minutes.
Strain
Elderberries are a bit tart so I like to add honey to sweeten the taste. Mmmm. very comforting. Hopefully, this will kick the cold to the curb.
What remedies do you use when you're feeling under the weather?
Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

ReplyDeletefeel better Happy T
Thanks for the suggestion
DeleteAh, "the never ending cold from Hell." Yes.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen elderberries for sale. Interesting. I hope your tea chases off your cold and you feel well soon. Happy T Tuesday!
I purchased them online from an elderberry cooperative.
DeleteOhh I am so sorry you both have not been feeling well. Enjoy the tea and get better very soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteSo sorry you're under the weather. Hope you & Himself feel better soon! (My go to is Zinc....don't know if it really works or it's just a placebo effect but I THINK I feel better so to me it's worth it!)
ReplyDeleteI have some Cold-eze so I'll grab one of them now
DeleteI’ve been fighting the start of a cold ever since I got home. I haven’t tried elderberry tea, but I have some elderberry gummies. I think they work. I do think the tea sounds more soothing as you can sip for awhile and enjoy it. Hope you feel better soon CJ and that you are having a great T day. Hugs Erika
ReplyDeleteI hope you didn't pick up something on the plane. When the Young One travels she always comes home with Plane Crud. Elderberry gummies sound good, too. Take care and Happy T Day
DeleteNothing seems to work consistently for colds, and people have been trying to find the magic bullet for centuries. Just about any hot liquid is somewhat of a relief, so whatever it tastes like, it’s probably good for you. There are so many superstitions and old wives’ tales!
ReplyDeleteGood luck finding the magic bullet… mae at maefood.blogspot.com

DeleteWasabi and Saltine Crackers-- it works if you catch the cold at the very first signs-- I like the Wasabi in the tube best for this, I squirt it onto the saltine cracker and then pop the whole thing upside down into my mouth--so the wasabi hits your tongue and not the roof of your mouth which is far more sensitive. It burns like you can't imagine but after 2-3 the cold germs are burned out of your system. It's been working for me for years.
ReplyDeleteYou couldn't have suggested licorice and chocolate, could you? 😺
Deleteha! I like licorice and chocolate- sometimes even together! Yeah it's unpleasant but it works like a charm. All of my sons do it and it works for them as well.
DeleteBig fan of the elderberries as you know, I would add ginger and chili to the tea, and yes it definitely needs some kind of sweetener, I agree. Hope you shake off this cold soon. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteThank you for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteWeek 7 with only a bit of coughing and runny nose, feeling stronger and had one tiny sport session today (25 minutes).
Let´s see how tomorrow will feel like ;-)
Happy T-Day!
Sounds like you're on the mend
DeleteThat cold really likes you guys. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I do Vit C.
ReplyDeleteI've been doing a multi-vitamin, vit. C, vit. D, an immunity boosting supplement made from mushrooms Himself got from his chiropractor.
DeleteLemon and honey in hot water is our household cold relief. We always have the ingredients and it comforts even if it doesn't cure. I usually have more allergies than colds though. I should own stock in *K l e e n e x*
ReplyDeleteWe should own stock in Kleenex, too
DeleteI have elderberry tea in a bag that I always forget about. I make a big batch of elderberry syrup every 6 months or so and we mainly consume that. It tastes SO good! Hope you are feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteHappy tea Day,
Kate
I should make a batch of elderberry syrup, too
DeleteYour mug made me smile, hope you're both better soon
ReplyDeleteThanks, Finn
DeleteSounds like it would taste good. Hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteIt tastes good with the honey. A bit on the tart side without it.
DeleteI hope that finally knocks it out. (Teddy said that honey with your tea will help. ;-) I have the elderberry gummies. I also like chicken noodle soup when I have a cold.
ReplyDeleteTell Teddy, I'll switch my sweetener and thanks 😺
DeleteFrom Elizabeth and Bleubeard: I've never tried elderberries, but I almost bought an elderberry bush one year during herb day. I bet it tasted good and went down well, too. I am sorry you and your husband are having problems getting well. Seems like a vicious cycle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your elderberry tea recipe with us for T this Tuesday. I hope it works for both of you.
This cold just seems to love us. I wish it would love and leave us
DeleteI like the recipe to chase cold away. I think my Mum used to use elderberries. I hope you are both better soon. Belated Happy T Day, Chrisx
ReplyDeleteThe elderberry tea is very comforting. Knock wood, we seem to be doing better
