It all started with the Young One not feeling well and complaining of stomach cramps on top of the my cold that made its way through the family. She called in sick to work.
Of course, getting sick always happens on a weekend or a holiday. Because New Year's Day fell on a Sunday, Monday was considered the official holiday. That's why you didn't get mail delivery yesterday.
The Young One has IBS and by mid-morning the Young One was feeling worse. Trying to drink water or eat a little food cause her more pain. We checked on the urgent care offices that accepted her health insurance. The closest office was closed for the holiday. Say, what? A closed office defeats the purpose of not clogging up hospital emergency rooms with non-life threatening illness or injury. One office had an opening at 6pm and the other didn't have any appointments until the following day.
There's an urgent care office about 5 miles down the road. It wasn't one of the offices listed, but it was open. A note on a whiteboard at reception noted the wait time to be seen was 4 hours. Because of the Young One's complaint about abdominal pain, the receptionist said that if it was decided an ultrasound was needed, we would be sent to the Emergency Room of the small, community hospital associated with the urgent care office.
Since it sounded like the Young One would end up in the ER anyway, we decided to leave and just head to the hospital. The wait time to be admitted to the exam room was about a half an hour.
Lots of people trooped in and out. The triage nurse, the care nurse, and someone from the billing department. Triage and care took the Young One's history and complaints. The first thing was lab work. The care nurse inserted an IV lock so if more bloodwork was needed or an IV was to be given, the Young One wouldn't have to be stuck with the needle a second time.
While the labs were being run, a Physician's Assistant came in to do a work up. It was decided to give the Young One a cocktail of Maalox and Lidocaine to settle her stomach. Because she was also dehydrated, an IV drip was started along with some other pain medication.
The afternoon wore on and the medications made the Young One feel a lot better. In between, I was texting Himself updates and since it looked like I wouldn't be back in time to feed the fur babies, I also told him he would have to take care of the babies.
An hour after the IV drip was empty, an Emergency Room Physician came in to poke and prod. Lab test were all normal. The next test was to see if she could eat and drink something without pain and to keep the food down. If she passed the food test, she would be discharged.
The nurse fetched the Young One some graham crackers and ginger ale. More waiting and updates to Himself. I didn't think of taking pictures of the ginger ale and graham crackers. So the drink reference is the description along with the picture of the IV drip.
Another hour or so later, the Young One wasn't having issues with the food. The doctor would call in a prescription for Prilosec to be taken twice daily for a month along with instructions to follow up with primary care and the Young One was sent home.
I told the Young One I love spending time with her, but not for 6 hours in the hospital. I had another hour to wait at home until I could go pick up the prescription at the pharmacy.
Today, we are both dragging. She call in sick to work again, and I see a nap in my immediate future.

wow, awful. I hope you are both feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Andy. Mass quantities of tea should help me today along with an afternoon nap.
DeleteDziwne. Żeby dawać piwo imbirowe choremu na zespół jelita drażliwego
ReplyDeleteI thought the ginger ale was and odd choice, too. Why not just plain water? But maybe the doctor was trying to trigger an episode.
DeleteWe always were given gingerale when we were sick! (Bev - Cdn)
DeleteThat is never a fun way to spend a day. But luckily the young one doesn't have something horrible going on. With the clouds it's a good day to nap. I hope you both feel rested afterwards. Happy nap day on this T day.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a good day to nap
DeleteOh no! I'm so sorry for both of you! (but more so for the Young One as I also suffer from IBS....) Hope she's feeling better today.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed. 🤞
DeleteI hope you enjoyed your nap, it was well deserved! Wishing your young one a speedy recovery and I hope you're feeling better too ☺️. Take care and Happy New Year! Wishing you a very Happy T Day too! Hugs Jo X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jo
DeleteTrips to the hospital wear down not only the sick one but the one helping. I'll bet she was happy to have her mom with her. :) Hoping she feels better soon... and i hope you got that nap! Happy T day! Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteYeah, even though she's a grown woman now, I think she was relieve to have me with her
DeleteI hope that you both feel better soon! And get PLENTY of rest! :(
ReplyDeleteThat's the plan for today
DeleteOh dear, so sorry to hear this, it must have been awful having to wait so long. Hope your little girlie stays well now! Valerie
ReplyDeleteWho knew that waiting could be so tiring?
Deletesounds awful for the both of you-ugh Hope she is doing better-hugs and not sure it is a Happy T
ReplyDeleteShe's doing a little better today. Thanks.
DeleteThat sounds like a not so fun start to the year. Mine not starting out too great - COVID positive this morning. At least the mail was nice and bright today!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that, Finn. I hope you'll feel better soon.
DeleteThis bout is not nearly as bad as the last time, feels like a bad cold (vs being run over by a truck for a month)
DeleteI'm still fighting a bad cold, nearly 3 weeks now. My Covid test was negative. Here's to both of us feeling better soon. 🐔🍲
DeleteI'll drink hot chocolate to that!
DeleteI'm joining the IBS club too unfortunately, not fun but had it for a long time. Always have ginger-ale and crackers on hand just in case and lots of herbal tea. Hope she is feeling a lot better now, and you too. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx
ReplyDeleteShe had a good restful day Wednesday. Thanks for asking
DeleteThat's no fun! Sometimes it is really hard to figure out where to go for help when it is an urgent issue. Hope you had a nap and the Young One is on the mend.
ReplyDeleteI missed my nap and did early bed instead. The Young One is doing better
DeleteEmergency rooms are just horrible, even when they see you quickly (we’ve had both experiences). I hope you don’t need them again! And that you have good health in 2023.
ReplyDeletebest… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Knock wood. Thanks, Mae
DeleteI have IBS also. Had a lot of tests, before they diagnosed it. So, scans etc. of all other body parts, like gall bladder, etc.
ReplyDeleteNow, I have some kind of little blue pill to take if I feel an attack coming on. Before, I would be totally debilitated with pain, no walking, no standing, no laying. So, I really can feel your daughter's pain. I know everyone's different, but I found I can't eat raw broccoli, or raw cucumber. I also can't wear panty hose, too tight, and bring on an attack. LOL Hope the rest of the year is better. Happy T Day.
Yes, she went through lots of tests. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason about what to eat or not to avoid an attack. Garlic and onions are a big no. Sometimes, she can eat plain, white rice and have no issues, and the following day, plain, white rice can cause lots of problems.
DeleteOh, yes. Ingo is a master at that. Weekend, public holidays... hospital time.
ReplyDeleteI read your pain. Your fear.
Once got stuck with Ingo in ER waiting room for 2 hours and he was bleeding (took blood thinner on doctor´s orders) It went on for hours and I had to leave him there.
I had to get a bit "un-polite" to get it all started, too...
We are Germans, it was in Australia, hallelujah.
Glad all went well - for all of us!
"Fun" drink-relation ;-)
Belated happy T-Day and to health!!
That ER experience must have been very scary being in a foreign country.
DeleteP.S. What about the background? That´s written in the old-German style... right? Yes! "versöhnen"! Took me a while to get that! My Niece would think she´s at the hairdresser!!!!!
ReplyDeleteShe would read "verföhnen"! BIG LOL!
Very good one!!! Hahahaha.... And just yesterday I put the Fön away (not even kidding!)
Yes, the background is the old-German style, Fraktur. It's one of my favorite scripts as I think it's so pretty. At the end of this month, we'll be celebrating National Handwriting Day so the background a nod to that. Yes, the long S can be confusing. 😺
DeleteOhhh what an ordeal. I have never heard of drinking Lidocaine. I guess that would help though. My doctor gives me Bentyl it helps me a lot. I am glad the young one is better.
ReplyDeleteBecause she was having muscle spasms, the lidocaine was to calm everything down
DeleteThat's an awful start to the new year. ER visits are such a drag - fortunately, we had that experience only once and it's enough for the rest of my life. I'm sorry that your daughter was in so much pain for such a long time, but good that eventually they were able to able her. I hope she is much better now and wish you and her a healthy 2023.
ReplyDeleteShe seems to be doing much better. Fortunately, she's not scheduled to work until next week so she has a good, long time to recover
DeleteOh my goodness! This sounds awful! Glad you found somewhere to help. IBS is not to be taken lightly and I'm sure it was a worrying time for you all . Hope she is feeling much better now! Happy New Year, hugs, Chrisx
ReplyDeleteYes, she's doing better
DeleteOh dear ... I am so sorry to read this. What a way to spend a day!
ReplyDeleteHoping that you are both well rested now and that 'young one' is feeling a lot better.
My good wishes.
All the best Jan
Hopefully, we got the bad stuff out of the way for the year.
DeleteThis is a generic copy and paste because I have so many I need to visit. I have been offline since early Tuesday morning. Not only did I lose internet and phone, I also lost heat and electricity. Thank goodness for extra blankets, layering, and two very warm fur babies. Just wanted you to know why you haven't heard from me.
ReplyDeleteI feel for your daughter AND for you. I waited over five hours one time when I drove Sally to the ER. At least your daughter knew she could count on you, dear. Thanks for joining T Tuesday this week, CJ.
