T Stands For Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns!
Hot cross buns!
One a penny,
Tow a penny.
Hot cross buns!

If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons.
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot cross buns!

Hot cross buns are fluffy bread rolls of fruit (currants, golden and regular raisins, etc.) and spices. They are marked with a cut cross or the way I like them a frosting cross. Lots of religious symbolism in the the little bun. You can read the history of them here.

They are easy to make and with this simple recipe, you can have them year round. I like them with a cup of tea and a side of Hershey Kisses.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  2. I have never had a hot cross bun. I think I need to add it to my bucket list. Yours looks very very yummy. And I love the little chick bowl with candy. That looks delicious too. Have a super T day CJ. Did you get sun or clouds yesterday? Hugs-Erika

  3. Yummy! I have never had a hot cross bun but I have seen so many varieties that now I am thinking I need to give them a try. Tea and kisses on the side sound like the perfect tea time.
    Happy Tea Day,

    1. It's just a sweet egg dough. Very easy to customize with things like craisins or chocolate chips. The Young One doesn't like craisins so I just use a combo of golden and regular raisins.

  4. I had some hot cross buns recently (from a bakery) that had truly fabulous frosting, with a citron flavor. I would love to know how they were made, but bakeries usually don’t give recipes! I didn’t think of eating them with a Hershey’s kiss, but it would have been fine.

  5. We love hot cross buns, I’ve never made them as I’m hopeless using yeast, we toast them and spread butter on them, I love the spices, I made a special journey to the English shop to buy some.
    Happy T Day

  6. My grandmother made these, too, CJ. I remember her cutting the cross into the pre-baked rolls. She also only used currants and raisins. I like the look of yours. I am sure it went well with your tea and Kisses. Just a wonderful way to celebrate Easter and beyond. Thanks for sharing the recipe and your tea with us for T this Tuesday, dear friend.

    1. I don't bother cutting the cross into the dough as I like the frosting, but the cut cross is traditional.

  15. Hubby and I love hot cross buns. Impossible to find of course here in the backwaters of Spain. I have tried to make them more than once. This year the bottoms burnt and hubby had to cut off the bottoms and I thought they tasted too bready. Next time I will try your recipe.
    Belated happy T-Day,
    Hugs,
