In 1620, Mayflower was also the name of the ship which brought settlers (Puritans) from England and Holland. Originally, these immigrants were to settle land near the Hudson River, but blew off course to Cape Cod. They explored the Cape and eventually decided to settle in the area of Pataxet, what is now Plymouth. The Mayflower Story, Mayflower 400
Although I knew the "Mayflower" in connection with the name of the ship, I had - to be honest - never thought about the fact that there must also be a flower with this name. It looks very pretty with the delicate shade of purple, too bad it's endangered.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!

Yes, such a shame a lot of native plants are endangered
DeleteWhat other flower could be the state flower of MA? Enjoy this nice day as it sounds like the weekend weather is going downhill after today. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteThe weather didn't sound like a washout.
DeleteI only knew the ship (there is also a The Simpsons episode on this) - what a pretty flower this is!

DeleteSo pretty but I didn't know it was endangered. You'd think we could have gotten a handle on it since 1925!? :-/
ReplyDeleteWith all the building, developments, and invasive species brought in since then, it's no wonder the flower is still on the endangered list.
DeleteWe do have a state flower! Y'all have so many more official state things than we do.
ReplyDeleteWe've been a state longer than you.
DeleteSo pretty CJ! Ours is the Bluebonnet.. Not much of a showing this past Spring because of lack of rain... but let it rain and oh my goodness what a show! Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a mayflower in the wild and I've only seen pictures of fields of bluebonnets
DeleteThe roadsides are like a carpet on the good rain years.. I believe if i'm right we have Ladybird Johnson to thank for all our wildflowers along the roadsides in TX .. it was a personal campaign of hers..
DeleteI learned two things from this post. One is that there is a plant/flower called Mayflower and two is that it is endangered. You are a font of knowledge, CJ.
ReplyDeleteNot me, but the Internet sources I use are - CJ
DeleteWhat a beautiful flower that is.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
It looks very delicate
