T Stands for the Greenville Drive

Himself is a fan of the baseball team, the Boston Red Sox. The Boston Red Sox has a farm league (minor league) team, the Greenville Drive in Greenville, South Carolina. The team had a home game while we were visiting so Moopa got tickets for us to go to a night game.

At the entrance to Fluor Field the logo for the Boston Red Sox

and the logo for the Greenville Drive

A statue to Greenville favorite son, Shoeless Joe Jackson. As a teen, Jackson was a textile mill worker and played for the mill's baseball team. He got his nickname Shoeless Joe when he removed his cleats because of blisters and played a game in his socks. Jackson is best remembered for his alleged association with the Black Sox Scandal when members of the Chicago White Sox fixed the outcome of the 1919 World Series. As result, Jackson was banned from baseball for life.

Fluor Field has a replica of Fenway Park's Green Monster.

Moopa got us great seats behind third base and across from the Jumbo-tron.

The Drive was playing the Rome Braves another A-league team for the Atlanta Braves. A Rome Brave player warms up before the game.

Players and fans stand for the National Anthem at the start of the game.

"And the home of the brave....Play ball!" (The last line of the National Anthem =^,.^=)

The score was tied 0 - 0. The Drive had 2 runners on base when fierce lighting and rain halted the game. The grounds crew scrambled to roll out the tarp to protect the infield.

Pouring rain and bolts of lightning come closer and closer. We were under an awning, but had to seek cover inside as the rain blew in. So what do you do?

You get a hot dog and a soda from the concession stand. I was too lazy to go get mustard and relish.

The storm passed and the grounds crew removed the tarp and mopped lakes of water off the field.

Back at our seats which miraculously stayed dry. Eye to the sky

Waiting for the grounds crew to finish

Ominous skies and storms on the horizon poised to roll through the area.

After an hour and a half debate of whether to play the game or not, the game was called because of the severe weather in the area. A make up game was schedule for the following afternoon. Fans could bring their tickets to gain admission to see the game.

Sadly, we were headed back to Ohio to pick up the Young One so weren't able to go. Moopa texted us that the Drive, pretty near the bottom of their division, won the game against the Braves with a score of 4 to 1. Moopa thought our presence in the field must have brought the team luck.

  1. It's great to see another farm team and how different they are from the farm team in Wichita that is for the Royals.

Those were some incredibly scary clouds, and I think a hot dog and a coke (in a Pepsi container, even!) might not have been incentive enough to keep me at the ball park. You were quite brave, because I know how lightening travels.

Thanks so much for sharing your hot dog and coke with us for T this Tuesday, and for the wonderful humor and great photos you shared of the experience you got at the Greenville Drive ball game.

    1. :-D I edited the generic coke to soda. We were just waiting for the umpires to make the decision and we were safe when we moved inside the stadium.

  2. That was quite the game, and you got a free heavenly spectacle added in. Good that you were able to use the time to grab a snack. Thanks for sharing the photos. Happy T Day, Valerie

  3. Aaaawww CJ i'm sorry they had to call the game! Kind of surprising they still had a statue of Shoeless Joe since he was a part of that scandal.... that doesn't seem to be the trend these days... Now i want a hotdog...lol Good to see you this T Tuesday! Hugs!deb

    1. Yeah, I was a bit surprised to see a statue to Shoeless Joe. On the other hand, he might have been involved with the scandal, and they can ban him from baseball, but they can't take away the records he held.

  4. I love baseball and my grandmother is the person who got me into it when I was just a kid. We were Philadelphia Phillies fans of course and if she could not watch a game on the tv she listened to it on the radio. GOOD MEMORIES FOR SURE!

    1. Himself's Nana got him interested in baseball. She was blind so she listened to the games on the radio. Sometimes he'll listen to the game on the radio. I think it brings back memories of Nana. That old lady could cuss out the ump if she thought a bad call was made :-D

  5. I didn't know the Red Sox had a farm team in SC. I knew about the team the Pawtucket, but that's a long way from SC. That looks like a fun night out. Too bad they had to call the game and you couldn't go back the next day. But a good vacation thing to do during a good trip. Hope you stay dry today but looks like maybe tomorrow we will dry out a bit. Hugs-Erika

    1. I thought the same thing, but Himself told me that most major league teams have farm teams all over the country.

  6. Even with the storms coming in-looked like a very fun night out-good memories for everyone too

    1. We had a good time even though the game was cut short. And there was ice cream waiting when we got back to the house.

  7. Looks like a fun time! Seeing a baseball game is on my someday list, I've seen plenty of American Football and ice hockey games while we have visited America but never a baseball game. Those clouds look so amazing and very atmospheric 😁. I hope you had a great time despite of the weather. Happy T Day! J 😊 x

    1. Baseball is a pretty slow game. But there's nothing like seeing the game live. The clouds and storm were amazing and didn't dampen our spirits even if the game was cut short.

  8. Looks like a beautiful night and a fun game. I was to Greenville a long time ago but I never got to see a game.
    Happy Tea Day,

  9. I have only been to a couple of minor league baseball games...and usually end up watching the fans instead of the game...your stormy weather provided some excitement and a pretty evening sky. Too bad you had to miss the make-up game! thanks for sharing your hot dog with us...happy t day!

    1. I've been to two Red Sox games and this game. Exciting to be at the stadium. I loved watching the crowd as much as the play on the field. We had it all. A game that promised to be a good one, hot dogs, natural fireworks, and I got a cap, too.

  11. A super post to read, it was certainly an eventful day, your photos were great and you got to see some of the game. It looked a tasty snack to have while you sheltered from the rain.
    Happy T day wishes.

    1. It was exciting to take in the sights and sounds of the ballpark. The crowd, crack of the bat, heavenly fireworks. All in all a great time.

  12. Another great story, CJ. I would have been rooting for the Braves. They were in Milwaukee when I was a kid. I saw some baseball greats: Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, Joe Torre.

What a fun thing for Moopa to arrange. It was an adventure for sure, even though you couldn't be there for the win.

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen

    1. It was a wonderful outing. Ticket prices for the Boston Red Sox are pretty steep so Himself hasn't gone to a game in decades.

  13. My husband is a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan, and your photos and descriptions made me feel like I was with you in the park. It's a shame about the game getting called. Ball park hot dogs are the best, aren't they! I remember hearing about that scandal and have heard people argue that Jackson was innocent. Maybe the people responsible for the statue are on that side of the argument. ;) Happy T Tuesday

    1. Himself and I were talking about Shoeless Joe. Himself said from some of the plays he made during that series, there was no doubt he wasn't throwing the game. Jackson's guilt was that he accepted the money.

  15. That was very interesting. I naively thought that baseball and American football were the same thing. (It is pretty obvious that I have never watched either of them)
Those clouds looked pretty ominous. Surprising that you kept dry. But what a shame you missed the game altogether. Never mind. I’m sure you had a good time anyway.
    Happy T Day,

    1. Baseball and (American) football are two very different sports. Baseball is probably close to the English Rounders and (American) football might be a bit like Rugby except players wear protective gear because getting thrown to the ground can be pretty rough.

  19. I wouldn't have known who Shoeless Jo Jackson was if I hadn't just seen Field of Dreams! Can you believe it is the first time I had ever seen it? Oh, how cool to go to a almost game at the Green Monster! I have only seen it on a bus tour of Boston when we were in port on a cruise.
Thanks for sharing the photos of the sky; pretty awesome.

  20. I love seeing photos of another area and another kind of life. I don't think we have baseball in the UK, not the way you have it over there. Shoeless Joe Jackson! - imagine playing a game in your socks! You got great skyscapes too.
