T Stands For King Cake

We don't usually celebrate Mardi Gras, but I stumbled on an easy recipe for Mardi Gras King Cake, a traditional sweet served at this time. I always thought King Cake was something different, an elaborate cake with different fillings, but it's really just a giant cinnamon roll.

I had most of the ingredients in the house except a plastic baby.  The plastic baby is hidden in the cake and the person who gets the piece with the baby is King/Queen and will have good luck and prosperity for the year. Also the person who finds the baby has to make the King Cake and host the Mardi Gras party the following year.

I didn't want to run out to the party store looking for a plastic baby. Also, if you're including something inside food, it should be edible.

I pulled out a small, heart cookie cutter, melted some chocolate and voila! an edible baby.

Traditionally, King Cake is frosted and decorated with colored sugar in green, yellow, and purple. I didn't have colored sanding sugar, but with a few drops of food coloring was able to color the sanding sugar I had. The purple looked almost black, but c'est la vie.

Ta-da! King Cake. It was so big, the only large plate I had was a spare microwave turntable dish

The piece of cake I had didn't have the baby in it. Neither did the piece Himself had.

But we all know who wears the crown, whether or not she finds the baby. On the mug: She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Since the King Cake is just a giant, cinnamon roll, a slice made an awesome breakfast the following day. I found the baby in the breakfast slice and split the baby with Himself. Breakfast of Champions.

    1. I had never had the cake either, so that it was way more elaborate, and more like cake.

    1. It was a nice recipe. The only difference is it used sour cream (I substituted plain Greek yogurt) which isn't an ingredient in the cinnamon roll recipe my friend, Lambie gave me

  4. Your king cake came out looking super, even the dark purple. I know, who would have thought a king cake was nothing more than a giant cinnamon roll? I made one last year and it tasted good, but wasn't really the most exciting of cakes. And your mug works perfect for a King cake, because let's face it, the queen is the ruler. Have a great T day. Hope you don't have these crazy winds. hugs-Erika

    1. It certainly looked pretty, but I prefer the cinnamon rolls without the sanding sugar

  5. My sincere apologies for this universal message, but my electricity has been off from about 4:25 Monday afternoon until shortly after 7:40 this morning. A transformer blew in my neighborhood. I heard the boom and felt the aftershock. It was a bitterly cold, windy night, so once my hands get warm and I get hot coffee and food in me, and I’ve had a chance to sleep (sleep was impossible in the cold), I’ll be by to visit properly. In the meantime, please accept my apology for not leaving a proper comment.

    1. The Eldest and I used to watch all the cooking contest shows. They would be faulted if any garnish or thing in the food wasn't edible.

  15. Looks like a delicious cake! I didn't realize it was just a cake version of a cinnamon roll. I might give this a try sometime. Good thinking to use something on hand for the baby.
    Happy Tea Day,

    1. Yup, instead of making a dozen cinnamon rolls, you make just one giant one.

  16. So funny about finding the baby and splitting it. It has been years since I had this cake. My stepmom sent one to me one Mardi gras, as they lived in N.O. This was probably 50 years ago! LOL I forgot about the baby! Thanks for the memory. Happy T Day!

  20. I absolutely adore your interpretation of the King Cake. I bought one in NOLA when I was there for Mardi Gras one year. It was not cinnamon, but I think I like yours better. Love the colors, which are definitely true to the colors they use. Thanks for sharing your tea, your King Cake, and your She Must Be Obeyed mug with us for T this week, dear CJ.
