We had been sick off and on during April and May so I had missed visiting the folks at Easter and Mother's Day.
Their 83rd wedding anniversary would be on July 4th. I told Himself I never heard the end of it from Ma if I missed this date. So on July 2nd, we headed out to the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Massachusetts.
We were in the middle of a heatwave with high temperatures and high humidity. Like a jaguar which lives in the rainforest, I don't mind this kind of weather. However, it was too hot for Himself to be sitting in the car even with the AC running.
There was also a Committal Ceremony going on when we arrived. The color guard and riflemen were going into the chapel to present the bereaved with the flag and the cartridges from the gun salute. So I didn't want to stay too long as it looked like Dad's area of the cemetery was going to have a new neighbor.
Usually on the ride home, we stop at Cracker Barrel for breakfast or brunch, but I didn't feel like going there. Instead, I found a diner in Sturbridge called The Little Rest Stop. It was in a cozy, little house and they put on a substantial breakfast. I had scrambled eggs, home fries, and raisin bread toast along with a cup of tea. The waitress was a little too perky, but the service was good.
As a special for the Fourth of July, the restaurant was also offering fried dough. So we each ordered that, too.
I didn't expect the fried dough to be the size of dinner plates! I was expecting the fried dough to be about the size of your hand. A normal size like Ma made. I had a small taste of the fried dough (delicious) and took the rest home.
Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

Our fried dough comes in the form of balls. As I don´t like sweets I googled that.
ReplyDeleteYour door-phone connection sure made me giggle. 30 seconds is quite a challenge indeed ;-) Even 2 minutes! Have a happy T-Day.
The two minutes has become a challenge 🤣
DeleteHello CJ and thanks for the comment on my recent post. It's always nice to met a fellow blogger and also one who lives in New England. That diner sounds like the type of place we would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteOff the beaten path so a lot of locals. It was cozy with very generous portions.
DeleteThat is such a cool thingummyjig to unlock your door. I'm not showing it to Barry 'coz he'll want one and I can't have another fob whose whereabouts I shall have to remember, because he never can. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteThere is no fob. The door control locks/unlocks manually from the inside, or automatically using your phone (if you choose that setting). You unlock the door with your thumb/fingerprint, or a passcode (numbers), or if the WI-FI goes out with a manual key. You can also use your phone to lock or unlock the door. As long as you know where your phone is, all is tickety boo. The device is called Ultraloq
DeleteThe door lock sounds cool!
ReplyDeleteIt is very cool. No more worrying about did I lock the door. Now I just have to worry if I left the stove/oven on 🤣
DeleteThat door sounds pretty neat! In my head i can hear hubby say...'just another thing to break down'..lol Aaaah the things in my head after 37 years... I'm sorry to hear your cemetery visit was rushed... the heat here? ... well lets not even talk about it... i would have been hard put to turn down Cracker Barrel.... I wish we had one... but it looks like you had a really good breakfast... I don't think i've ever had 'fry bread' .. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteFried dough is delicious. Same recipe as pizza dough (water, flour, yeast, a little sugar and salt) I like it plain and simple with powdered sugar. You can use it as a base for personal pizza or fruit with whipped cream. Whatever you can imagine.
DeleteI make Indian Fry Bread. It's so good. The door lock is a good idea. Have a good day today.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a great day
DeleteI’ve always wondered why the doors of houses couldn’t work the same way that the doors of cars work — ours simply unlocks when we approach it with a key fob in a purse or pocket. Yours sounds as if it’s close to that functionally.
ReplyDeletebest… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
The door has multiple ways to be locked/unlocked: a passcode, a fingerprint, and if electricity and WI-FI are down, there's a physical key
DeleteI haven't been to Sturbridge in for ever. I wonder if they still have all those great little shops and outlet stores. Your brunch looks amazing, and the fried dough does too. I also haven't had fried dough in a long long time either. If my mother was alive she would be on my case because of how long its been since I went to her grave. :( I hope your having a super T day and don't get any big storms today.
ReplyDeleteSo far no rain. I guess the monsoons are predicted for Wednesday
DeleteMust say that door lock sounds good.
ReplyDeleteHappy Tuesday.
All the best Jan
It's pretty cool
DeleteThat's very cool that you go and visit your parents in their resting place.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast looked yummy.
You got yourself one smart door lock:)
We visit the folks at least 3 or 4 times during the year. Around Mother's Day, their anniversary (4th of July), her birthday in September, and just after Thanksgiving when the cemetery allows a plain, live Christmas wreath with one bow (no decorations or doodads 😢) to be placed.
Deletethecontemplativecat here. Every Memorial day, our community always spent time with their late family members. Fry bread? Hmm.
ReplyDeleteFried dough. Fry bread is really a Native American thing
DeleteThank you to your father for his service to our nation. I haven't had breakfast yet, so that fried dough sounds delicious. Happy belated T is for Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteThe fried dough was soooooooo good.
DeleteIt was down right COOL where you were. Monday it was 106 F (41.1 C) and Tuesday it was 113 F (45 C). Talk about extreme heat!
ReplyDeleteWonderful to see you visited your parents graves on the 2nd. I always enjoy your cemetery visits.
That was a substantial breakfast. And the fried dough looked good. Our Native American Center makes something similar.
Thanks for sharing your trip, your breakfast, and your hot tea with us for T this week, CJ. Sorry I'm late visiting. Had a bad two days.
