For lunch this day we headed South to York Beach and the Sun and Surf Restaurant on Long Sands Beach. It was a perfect day for fried clams, but MP (market price) on the menu means expen$ive. The waitress told me the fried clams were $42. Yup, thank you, no. Portions at restaurants are hefty, and I didn't want to bring back anything to the motel. Reheating fish in a microwave isn't a pleasant thing. (To think when I came up here with a work friend 47 years ago, while Teague was living in California, this restaurant was just a little clam shack)
I opted for a cheap less expensive cod basket and an Arnold Palmer. We ate outside on the terrace. If I stood up and looked over the seawall around the restaurant I could see
Nubble Light at the tip of the point
After lunch we drove over. Yup, the lighthouse was still there. The only difference was the cloud formations were different and a fog bank was rolling in.
I struck up a conversation with an elderly couple. I have to stop thinking like that because I don't think I was far behind them in age. They had ridden up on a motorcycle. They told me the day before you couldn't see the lighthouse because of the fog. We watched a young woman putting on scuba gear. She had booties, gloves, a hood. The water was really cold. I had never seen anyone diving here. Teague told me they did testing and diving certifications.
After conversation and admiring the scenery, we decided to stop at Ogunquit Beach. If there was parking and the parking app I downloaded worked. We found a parking space, the parking app worked, and I dipped my toes in the water. The water was a brisk 61 °F (16 °C) I thought my heart was going to stop from cold water shock. No wading that day.

Deep fried cod and chips equals a very British 'fish & chips'. It's my favorite meal and one that is not readily available here. I have to travel an hour and a half to find an English restaurant here in southern Spain.
ReplyDeleteI also love clams, but here they also are very expensive.... (sigh)
I smiled at your comment about the elderly couple. I am 75 and I also talk about 'an elderly couple' when I am probably older than they are. (Spanish people look a lot older than they are)
You are visiting a very beautiful area. I know you have been there before as I recognise the light house. Nevertheless very beautiful.
No, I wouldn't go paddling in that sort of temperatures. But it's summer! How come it's so cold. I suppose the ocean is a large amount of water and it takes time to heat up.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca
Maine is quite North so the water in the Atlantic takes a long time to heat up. Usually by the middle/end of August the water will be around 70 °F (21 °C). It's been a weird Summer. Cool days then hot. It wasn't really beach weather on our trip. We should have gone on our trip last week when the temps here were in the 90 °F and close to 100 °F.
DeleteI love these posts so much. I always get whole bellied clams at the start of Summer. I have a rule; if that first order isn't perfect I'm going to never fail Harry's for one that will be top notch. #2 son and my mom are also big clam fans so I usually treat. It's a splurge but it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteThis year I got some from Pinecroft in West Boylston which if you google.com best whole clams in Central MA they come up #1. They were good and I polished off a whole pint but the bellies were a little on the small side so I'm still going to Harry's. There are some things I don't care about the price, even though I absolutely can't afford it. I'll just cut back on other things I usually indulge in for a few weeks-- buy bye DUNKS ™ !
I was too cheap to buy them knowing I wouldn't be able to finish them. I didn't want to take them back to the motel only to toss them the next day. I love Harry's fried clams so I'm sure we'll be making a trip there this month.
DeleteYour trip sounds wonderful CJ! We see the MP on food when we go to the steak house now.. crazy... I never liked fried clams.. for me it was countless steamed clams.. with butter... I would give away my LobsterTail for all the clams...lol Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteI'll take your lobster tail. To me, steamers are too much work for too little gain. Having to wash the sand off them before eating.
