THE Most Horrific Scene in the Entire Game of Thrones Series

Brienne of Tarth writes in the book, turns the page, and closes the book before the ink has dried 😱

  1. I don't watch this series, but I can see why this would affect you being a calligrapher. Not sure if the title of this post was intended to be made in humor or not.

    1. But it made me scream, "Honey, that's not a ballpoint pen you're using" when I first saw the episode. :-D

  3. I'm assuming you're saying this is horrific because of it being a no-no for anyone who understands when you write with pen and ink, you must let the ink dry before you do something like close the book, right? (I don't have HBO, so I never saw Game of Thrones.) Interestingly, I've noticed in old black and white movies, when they wrote with pen and ink, sometimes they used something to blot dry the page. (I'm not sure what it was, but I saw it done in a few movies. Perhaps the Game of Thrones writers should have done their homework (research) better, and shown him blotting the page before closing the book. :-)

    1. Yeah, it was a shock to see her casually turn the page, write some more and then close the book before the ink had a chance to dry. Quick get the smelling salts, I feel the vapors coming on!

A kind of sand called pounce was used. This was sprinkled over the writing like speedy dry. Blotting paper was also used up through the 19th c.

  4. We always used blotting paper at school and I still use it here when I write with my fountain pen. Have a great week, Valerie

  5. I image for a calligrapher it was horrific. But I like to think she closed the book on purpose so his story would smudge up enough, since he did leave her. Hugs-Erika

    1. I don't think so. Sounds like something Cersei would do. Brienne was so much above that kind of pettiness. After all, she took the time to complete his page. She could have left his story unfinished.

  9. My husband did calligraphy is his younger days. I'll have to give him a trigger warning if we ever catch up on all we've missed ;)
