T Stands for Portland Head Lighthouse

On our Camp Ogunquit trip, we took a ride to visit Fort Williams and the Portland Head Light House in Cape Elizabeth. There's a museum in the lightkeeper's cottage, but as our trip was early in the season, it wasn't open.

A field of potential wishes on the grounds of Fort William. After wandering around the park and reading the historic stuff about the remains of the WWII battery that was stationed there, we headed for lunch at

I had the best gyros I had ever had. The first time I have ever had a gyros made with beef (usually it's lamb). What made the gyros amazing was the fresh-baked pita. I also had sweet potato fries and unsweetened iced tea with lemon.

Teague had a turkey sandwich made with thick slices of real turkey breast, not deli sliced turkey. She had a lemonade.

After lunch, we went to visit Two Lights State Park to visit the twin lighthouses. The park is a popular spot and there were no parking spots. The Western light  is no longer a functioning lighthouse but is now a private home. The Eastern light is an automated lighthouse and still working. Because we couldn't get into the park, I couldn't get a picture of the twin.

  2. Fun that you took a trip up to Cape Elizabeth. That's where my husband was from (well after Reading, MA and Atlanta). Cape Elizabeth always reminds me of being back in my 20's when the hubby and I were dating. Sounds like you had fun. Happy T day. hugs-Erika

    1. There are 65 lighthouses in Maine, many open to the public. I should tell Teague we should see if we can visit all of them. Wouldn't that be fun.

  5. What a wonderful outing-I have never seen a lighthouse up close that would be really cool to tour. I have seen some restoration programs on the tv fixing up old lighthouses.
Your food looks sooo delicious too, sounds like an awesome day with your friend Happy T hugs Kathy

    1. There are a few lighthouses that are open for a tour. Nubble, Portland Head, Twin Lights can only be seen from the outside. It would be very cool to see the inside of the lighthouse.

    1. The lifestyle wasn't quite as romantic as we imagine a lighthouse keeper's job to be

  8. I was super impressed with the light house. Beautiful. I was also quite impressed with the restaurant where you ate. For years, many Mexican restaurants and food trucks have featured beef gyros because lamb was not as available as beef. The beef is shaved off the skewered cone like traditional lamb.

Thanks for sharing these lighthouses and your gyro and iced tea with us for T this Tuesday, dear CJ.

    1. Most of the Greek restaurants around me, seem to get the lamb. Until this trip, lamb was the only meat featured in gyros where we ate. The beef was equally delicious, too, though the homemade pita was the best

  9. Everybody loves lighthouses -- for good reason! Your sandwiches look delicious. I really enjoy when they use house-roasted turkey for a sandwich.

    1. It was such a nice, little restaurant. Since the season hadn't really started (Memorial Day weekend will be the kick off) the restaurant wasn't crowded. I can see it being a popular place for lunch and dinner after visiting the lighthouses
