T Stands for Mary on the Prairie Makes Distilled Water

with a little bit of help from Himself as Mr. Wizard.

This past month grocery shopping has been a bit of a challenge. Some items on the shelves have been completely bare like bread or still are completely bare like toilet paper.

At the beginning of this month, we were having a difficult time finding distilled water. Himself needs distilled water for his CPAP machine that helps him to breathe at night. He has Sleep Apnea so without the machine he stops breathing several times during the night.

Now bread I can bake (and I've whined this before) as long as I can find flour and yeast. So I asked Mr. Wizard how difficult would it be to make distilled water. Not difficult at all. You would just need a bucket with a smaller bucket filled with water and placed inside the larger bucket. Tent some plastic wrap over the bucket with the ends inside the bucket. Then you just let the whole thing sit in the sun.

Ok. So Himself cleaned out one of the new blue buckets formerly filled with water to flush the toilet in case of a power outage. I had a plastic, Tupperware canister no longer needed to hold a 5 lb. bag of flour as I got new canisters. So I filled the smaller canister with water and placed it inside the bucket.

The plastic wrap wasn't wide enough to fit over the bucket, but I had a clear, plastic trash bag and used the handle to prop it up. The idea is that the sun will cause a green house effect, the water in the bucket will evaporate, condense on the plastic and roll down the sides into the big bucket where it is distilled water.

Distilled water is water that has been heated and has had minerals removed through the process. Like when you boil a pot of water  with a lid on the pot. The droplets that form on the lid is distilled water.

So with 15 days of rain, the bucket was moved into the sun room where it can get sunlight if the sun every comes out.

My drink reference for the post is water. Water, water everywhere and so far a tablespoon of distilled water to drink. Though why anyone would want to drink distilled water with its flat taste is beyond me.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  1. Well you've told me something I never knew, how to make distilled water, that's very clever, we were told that the water that comes out of the air con unit is also distilled! not sure if that's true though.
Have a good T Day, hope your idea works, take care

    1. Yes, and no. Water going through AC goes through the distillation process and is pure, but the equipment is not. So as soon as the water is distilled it passes through the unit picking up rust, mold, mildew, whatever is inside the unit and defeating the purpose of distilled water.

    1. Fortunately, he only needs a cup. Maybe 1 year ๐Ÿ˜บ Though I bet the process would work faster where you live where the sun is out every day.

    1. I just showed this to Himself. Mr. Wizard said technically it's not distilled water, but the pitcher does what he needs it to do. Cool

    1. We did manage to get distilled water. Flour and yeast are still not available. I did get some plant derived spray disinfectant and I have some paper towels and also reusable microfiber cloths to use as wipes. Yup, first world problems

  5. Wow, how fabulous that you can produce your own distilled water! This takes me back to Chemistry lessons at school ...lol ๐Ÿ˜‰. Sending you Happy T Day wishes and keep well! Hugs, Jo x

  6. Sounds very complicated. I still have a big bottle of distilled water if I need it for my iron or to mix with some chemical for painting. Not that I iron much, so it keeps a long time! Happy tea/ water day, stay safe, Valerie

  7. What an interesting post. I had no idea how to make distilled water from water. So glad that you shared this. We too have gotten a lot of rain as of late.
    Happy Tea Day,

  8. So glad you all are clever enough to make your own distilled water so hubby has it for his much needed machine treatments. Although some things are emptied off the shelves where I shop - things pretty much get replenished (outside of disinfectants, wipes, soaps mostly) each week, and I have learned that going at certain times also makes a big difference. Keep well, and happy T day!

  9. Yeah, we've had a lot of rain here in the Northeast US, over the past week or so, and more in the forecast. The sun hasn't made much of an appearance. And with all of the covid-19 created shortages continuing, we might all have to become Mary on the Prairie. :-(

  10. These supply and food shortages have been the strangest thing for me to wrap my head around. I have read several explanations, none of which make sense to me. How brilliant of y'all to make your own distilled water. Even the best tap water isn't appropriate for some uses. Happy T Tuesday!

    1. The toilet paper shortage still has me baffled. I thought by now people wouldn't still be in panic mode buying. And if they are stockpiling, why are they whining about getting out to normal? Weren't they supposed to be able to stay in their bunkers for a zombie apocalypse? ๐Ÿ˜บ

  12. I've had the same days of rain you also have apparently suffered. I just get mine a day sooner than you get yours.

Your Mary on the Prairie post had me smiling. I definitely learned something new today. It's really good to know in case my distilled water that I use in my art can't be replenished. Thanks for sharing how to make distilled water and the drops of water you got from the process for T this Tuesday, dear CJ. Hope the sun comes out soon.

  13. Uff here too many items were missing from the store shelves, a little bit of everything, mostly flour, rice, eggs, milk, meat, and, yes, also toilet paper.
What a great idea to be able to get your own distilled water. Thank you very much for all this information.
Bake bread is a very good idea, I have done it sometimes, and it tastes better than the bread we can buy. Happy T-day!
I wish you a very nice evening, stay safe and healthy dear, and big hugs,

  14. I think you distilling your own water is fantastic. My hubby uses a sleep machine as well, fortunately it doesn't need added water. Along with the other health issues he has I think I would be going a bit crazy by now, if I had to distil water.
Happy T day wishes, stay safe.

  15. We are lucky that in our supermarkets there are no empty shelves. I have plenty of toilet paper and flour etc. I have only been out to the supermarket twice but everything was there.
But we are unlucky in the weather. So far 27 days of rain this month and the last two weeks of March we rainy too. Very unusual in this arid part of the country. The hills are green and I have never seen them like this!
Clever hubby to figure out how to make distilled water without a distiller. Can I make my own gin like that?
    Happy T-Day,

    1. I'm not sure why store shelves can't stay stocked. I thought the panic buying would have ended by now. So far this month we have had 17 days of rain. As to the gin, I asked that question, too. Um, no. ๐Ÿ˜บ

What?! That toilet paper-thingy is still going on?! Bakeries are open and have plenty of bread here...

Scary with your hubby! I am sorry, life can be mean.
I think you should not drink that distilled water, you need the minerals. But glad you can produce it!!!

We are lucky, we get such clear water from the Harz mountains we can use it for everything, never any calcium carbonate in washing machine, boiler etc...

A happy belated T-day and hugs, to staying healthy as good as we can!

    1. Yes, the toilet paper shortage is still going on. I wasn't able to get any in today's shopping run.

Some people drink distilled water. It's a new health craze fad. Don't ask me why. We don't use the distilled water for drinking. Just for his machine and I use it when painting.

We have our own well where we get water, but it's very high in iron and manganese. We have a whole house filter to take care of the metals.

  20. Interesting, CJ. Do you know you can whiten old yellowed plastic. Paint the yellow with hydrgen peroxide. Seal item in a plastic bag and set in the sun for aa few hours. Very similar to your process foor distilled water. I sure hope the sun comes out soon to do the job.

    Happy T-Day! Eileen xx

We are still having a flour and yeast shortage but very happily, although I put plain white flour on our online list they sent bread flour which made hubby(the bread maker) very happy as we had dried yeast in already! Belated Happy T Day! Chrisx

  23. wow, that's clever. The only thing we can't find is flour. Lots of water to be had. i'm in the process of filling gallon jugs etc.. I'm getting a good supply in case anything goes wrong and i would need this.

    1. Though our well water is perfectly fine to drink, I bought a Britta type pitcher so I never have to buy bottles of water. The filters last a couple of months and you have an endless source of water from your tap.
