How Does Your Garden Grow?

Frigid temperatures to start the week

didn't stop the snowbirds from visiting the bird feeder.

The solar fairy lights in the Japanese maple that haven't worked in forever decided to flash

The temperature warmed up

balmy temperatures and light rain

turned into heavy rains. The snowy backyard became a slushy lake that emptied into the basement when the sump pump couldn't keep up with the amount of water melting and coming down from the sky.  We waded out and Himself set up another pump outside in a dry well by the garage window. It helped.

The temperature has dropped and everything is frozen again.

The next project is to see if we can solve the wet basement problem once and for all without using a match and an accelerant.

How does your garden grow?

  1. A match and an accelerant? Sounds drastic. Glad it has warmed up a bit. It's a bit milder here, too, but grey and wet. Vaerie

    1. Sometimes you just get tired of fighting the water. Temps have dropped and we're going into a deep freeze

  2. good morning, love your new background-we are getting some of that very cold as well but hopefully not below 0 just a few degrees above 0 I always worry about losing the well when it gets this cold.
Hubs is hoping he has the water in the basement issue solved for the lake house-but this wintry weather has stalled the job.
stay warm and safe hugs-oh and cool that the fairy lights decided to come on

  4. Here's the difference between weather there and weather here: You call 52 degrees "balmy" lol! We're expecting a high today of 55 and our lowest temp so far this winter on Wednesday night when the predicted low is 17. We're not expecting any precipitation at all this week.

Houses here don't generally have basements, but we did see one when we were house-hunting back in the day. Us: "There's water standing down here." Realtor: "It's a basement." We decided a basement wasn't a thing we wanted ;)

Your fairy lights are pretty. I've sometimes been tempted to put some around a window inside.

    1. After minus temps and the wind making the temps feel even colder, 30 would be warm!

  6. I got finally got the basement about 99% dry so I can relate. We only get this when the ground is frozen and we get that heavy rain we had. I do love your temperature kitties. is that a phone app? Let's hope its a snow free week and so we can the end the month in a good weather way. Happy what is left to the weekend. Hugs-Erika

    1. Here's to no more rain or snow for a while. We've had more than enough since the Summer and Fall.

Yes, the temperature kitties is an app called Weather Kitty

    1. Winter is my least favorite season. Give me sunny, hot, and humid any day of the week. And twice on Sunday :-D

  8. Sounds like your weather is unpredictable and it's not much fun having rain after the ground is frozen either It's been much colder here too although we haven't had any snow. By the way the little cats are too cute ...lol 😉. Wishing you a happy new week! J 😊 x

    1. We can only hope that we're done with the ice and snow. Is it July, yet?

  9. Cold, cold cold. The temps have been so up and down (mostly down) here for the past few weeks. I would take July over this weather any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

  10. I am so sorry about your basement CJ!!! We had the same problem a few years ago, until we got the house waterproofed! They dig all around the house and put this hard plastic against the house. Touch wood it has worked amazing!! Wishing you all the best with the weather! We are freezing and have like 10 feet of snow!

    1. That will be the next project to waterproof the basement. We don't have that much snow, but we did get a visit from the Polar Vortex. Brrrrrr. Glad it will be retreating by the beginning of next week.

  11. Now I know about your basement. I've considered the same thing in mine (a match and accelerant). PLEASE get fans down there so the basement can dry out and not have mold. Believe me, you don't want mold.

BTW, we are supposed to have a 55 degree difference between yesterday and this Sunday. And that doesn't include wind chills, either.

    1. We did have mold and had a company come in to remove and treat it. Waiting for them to come back this week to test to make sure the treatment worked.
