More from our tour of the Hammond Castle.
Out of all the beautiful art in the castle, Hammond's family tree made my heart sing. Done in calligraphy, the Hammond family traces it's lineage back to Charlemagne. With the amount of money the family had, you would think that the tree would be better framed so the paper wouldn't buckle.
Hammond had 3 brothers and 1 sister. None of the Hammond children had offspring of their own. When Hammond and his wife passed away, the Hammond Castle became a museum.
Award cups
A beautiful, calligraphed poem dedicated to Hammond.
Looking down on the pool from the balcony. Supposedly, Hammond and guests jumped from the platform. The pool is 8 feet deep.
The Master Bedroom

Steuben glassware (more cups)
A guest bedroom
I thought Kathy would like to see the spinning wheel
This guest bedroom has 2 exits and a door to a private bath. Hammond had the door wallpapered in the same covering as the walls. First time guest would be shown to the room, and all the doors would be closed. There were no knobs or pulls on the doors from the inside. So the guest would have a difficult time finding the door to the bathroom or a door to get out. Hammond was a practical joker.
Lots of wondrous things to see here. The family tree could really be better framed! The caste ruins here belonged to the Emperor Barbarossa, but Charlemagne also stayed here back in the very distant past! Happy T day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool.
DeleteHow fun to see more of Hammond Castle. Funny how out of a family with 4 kids no one had children themselves to inherit the estate. And I bet you shivered when you saw that wrinkled paper. Even I shivered, and I am not a calligrapher. Have a super T day CJ. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI shiver every time I look at the photograph 😺
DeleteGood morning, Yes I Loved seeing the spinning wheel-thank you. This was such an interesting home, I bet he had fun with the bathroom door you can not see haha. that was interesting that the calligraphy geneology was not framed properly-is it now too late to fix that?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing more rooms and the dishes, and we put down a parque floor like that In hubs business room at our woods home. Happy T hugs Kathy
I don't think it's too late to fix, but it would take some careful (and expensive) conservation to see the piece is properly taken care of and to prevent future damage
Deletethey should restore it then if the monies are there-thanks
DeleteI'm surprised the museum hasn't conserved the family tree better! (and that none of the Hammonds had kids!)
ReplyDeleteI was surprised, too, on both counts
DeleteThe calligraphy family tree looks so beautiful, it's such a shame it's all buckled like that. I loved looking around the castle with you, it's an amazing place with so much history 😀. Wishing you a very Happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeleteThe castle is amazing with so much too see. You'll see more next week. 😉
DeleteHow strange none of them had children, sad really not to have someone to pass it on to. That would freak me out not being able to get out, I wouldn’t sleep worrying about how I would find the door.
ReplyDeleteHappy T day, Jan x
I think I'd find something to prop all the doors open a crack so I could get out or to the bathroom. 😺
DeleteAnother fun, fun post. It appears the glue that held the family tree in place lost its oomph. Too bad, too. I agree it can be salvaged, but the restoration would be expensive.
ReplyDeleteHad to laugh at Hammond's practical jokes with the bath doors.
I love the dresser in the photo below the spinning wheel. It's too dark, too modern, not my style, and not my wood, but for some reason I love it, because it reminds me of one my grandmother had when I was growing up. Hers wasn't quite so dark stain wise, though.
Those cups, cups, and more cups were impressive. That was a great find. I look forward to seeing more of this castle, too. Thanks for sharing it and your cups, cups, cups with us for T this Tuesday, dear.
The cups, cups, and more cups, was to make up for not having a proper beverage in last week's post.
Delete"None of the Hammond children had offspring of their own." I find that quite surprising! I love the window details. That kind of practical joke isn't a good thing for a guest expecting more hospitality in a host.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would have found Hammond's practical jokes amusing. Probably would have responded in true Little Princess fashion: We are not amused. 👸
DeleteI forgot to mention. I LOVE tomatoes, just not hot tomatoes stuck between two slices of bread.
ReplyDeleteGrilled cheese and tomato is a favorite sandwich around here.
DeleteThat is a shame about the condition of the family tree, CJ. You'd think the museum would restore it. Maybe the paper is too delicate.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered a beginner's calligraphy set. I'm excited for it to arrive so I can try my hand!
Happy T-day! Eileen xx
I'm sure there must be a way to back the paper to provide stability. As noted above, it would take a lot of do-re-mi.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your calligraphy set!
Nice to see more of Hammond Castle …
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
And you'll see more next week. The last part, I promise. ✋
DeleteI loved seeing more photo of your visit to the castle. It was a shame about the condition of the family tree, I hope the curators of the museum may get it restored sometime.
ReplyDeleteHappy T day wishes.
Yvonne xx
It would be nice if they could have the family tree restored.
DeleteMore beautiful photos of this castle. What a great place to get to visit. Happy T-Day!
ReplyDeleteThe castle would make a great backdrop for Teddy portraits.
DeleteHammond Castle is very interesting. I would not jump into the pool from that balcony. :) Happy T Day!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'd jump from the balcony, either.
DeleteCan you imagine, if you really needed to use the facilities and couldn't find the bathroom. Ack.
ReplyDeleteMost likely would be the last time I would stay as his guest
DeleteWhat a place! I shivered seeing at the family tree displayed like someone's graduation diploma. Surely it could be restored?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it could be restored or at least stabilized, but the conservation wouldn't be cheap.
DeleteGreat photos of Hammond Castle. So surprising that they haven't framed that family tree better. I think it got damp and wrinkled.I'm sure it could be restored.
ReplyDeleteAlso surprised none of the children had offspring.
And surprised the guestroom doesn't have door knobs. I'm not sure I would have found it funny if I needed the toilet in the night.
But the house is magnificent. I love the Steuben glassware and the parquet floor.
Sorry for being so late again,
Happy belated T-Day,
Hugs,
Lisca
I'm with you. I wouldn't have found his practical jokes funny.
Deleteno doors on the inside ...that really made me laugh!! i enjoyed the tour and the calligraphy is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou might not laugh if you couldn't find the bathroom door. 😉
DeleteThis is a super post CJ !! Thanks so much for sharing it with us. The photographs are awesome, I´ve enjoyed this visit to Hammond castle. The Master Bedroom is spectacular, would like to rest there one night !
ReplyDeleteLove the cups, and all the furniture, it´s a fabulous castle. Love the calligraphed poem!!
Wish you spent a lovely T-day,
I wish you a very nice Thursday, and send big hugs
