Throwback Thursday: What Was the Best Gift You Got As A Kid?
There were 2 gifts I got when I was a kid that I loved to death. And I still have them.
The first was the Spirograph, a drawing tool that made intricate designs using gears. I was around 10 or 11 years old when my parents gave this to me one Christmas. Out of all the gears that came with the set, only one small gear is missing. Not bad since a lot of children played with this set besides me in the 50 plus years I've had it.
The other gift was The Language Book. For those that followed my dad's Notebook series on Throwback Thursdays, this book was a Christmas in July gift from Charlie and Doris. They lived in West Newbury quite a distance from us, before the Interstate was put in. And the weather always seemed to turn bad during the Winter when my folks and Charlie and Doris would try to make arrangements for a holiday gathering. So, they decided to celebrate Christmas when the weather was better and traveling was easier during the Summer. I was 12 years old when I received this gift. The book covered the history of language from cave paintings to space communications. The subject just fascinated me and probably one of the reasons I majored in English Language and Literature in college.

Ohhh, I remember having seen a Spirograph at a friend´s!
ReplyDeleteAnd the book sounds awesome, I´ll have a look if it´s available on Kindle!
Hmmm. To be honest the best gifts I received as an "adult"!
I remember a stupid barbie-doll who had a bath. You could put water in the tub, push the button... did it once, done, boring.
A doll house, boring. Dolls in general, boring.
But when I was 24 my parents gave Hubby (back then boyfriend) money, so we could spend six months in Australia and they repeated this, as I brought so much money back (we slept in the car etc).
Does this count? I was still a student. Right? I´m still not mature.
Yeah, that counts especially from you parents because no matter how old your are, you are always a kid to your parents.
DeleteSounds good. I never got presents as a kid, so I can't choose a fave one! Have a great day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteHow about as an adult?
DeleteAhh yes, I also loved my Spirogragh and it is somewhere up in my mom's attic. I also still have my very first baby doll from my nana and her eyes close when you lay her down. My mom used to sew handmade dresses for her. Good memories indeed!
ReplyDeleteCool that you still have your spirograph and the baby doll from your nana. Sweet that your mom made clothes for the doll.
DeleteI have not heard of the spirograph sounds like a fun toy. Only thing I remember as a child for gifts was clothes-my Mom was always too practical so we rarely got toys. but one year when I was young she bought me a Toni Doll and made a whole wardrobe of clothes for her-dolls always creaped out though-wierd I know but they seemed like little people trapped in these dolls haha they still give me the creaps
ReplyDeleteI was a tomboy so didn’t really play with dolls even though I had them. Yeah, dolls are kind of creepy especially the antique dolls. 😱
Deleteyes those especially
DeleteI remember having a spirograph as a kid..loved it! And now someone from work gave me an old spirograph they no longer wanted.. I intend to have fun with it too.. I asked hubby your question and he says he didn't receive many gifts as a child but remembers loving those little plastic army men as a great gift.. Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteCool about the spirograph. I just figured out that the Pigma pen will fit in the little holes and Pigma comes in colors besides black. Himself and I loved playing with the little, green army men, too.
DeleteI can't think of any at the moment because I'm blinded by this year's gift....a Cintiq Pro!!! :) (I'm not trying to show off....I'm just overwhelmed!) :O
ReplyDeleteWOW! I’m coming over to your house to play!
DeleteAnytime! :)
DeleteI loved my Spirograph. I don't still have it, but I used it for many a year. I remember my delight over my green tricycle. And the year I got the 64-color crayon box with the sharpener in the back. Joy! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, that Crayola 64 was another gem.
DeleteI had a Spirograph until the first flood, at which time it never made it back from the storage facility. I was sick, because I loved it. All those plastic gears were a mathematician's dream come true. I loved hearing about yours and how well it has held up over the years. I'm also impressed that the book Charlie and Doris gave you helped shape your future.
ReplyDeleteNothing special comes to mind for me, as I simply don't remember anything as a child. I've blocked it out after I lost both my grandparents within 9 months of each other. Amazing how a brain works.
Aww, too bad the flood claimed your Spirograph
DeleteIncredible - Like WoW
ReplyDeleteCheers
😺
DeleteI wish I still had my spirograph. That was a great toy. And I had this heat oven like thing that used to make creepy crawlies. And play doh and this spinner where you would add paint to make those cool splatter paintings. I could go on, as this post has brought back so many cool memories. Thanks for that CJ. It's nice to remember. Hope you had a wonderful holiday. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI had the creepy crawly set and a flower power set , too! Play Doh was pretty much a staple. I didn’t have the splatter painting machine as a kid, but I bought one as an adult to do a stress relief workshop. Lots of fun!
DeleteI can remember getting Spirograph and youngest Grand-daughter has now got one, she loves it!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
A timeless toy
DeleteCool gifts! I loved my colouring books! My mom would get me some really unusual ones, that were really large! I also still have my "Merlin" hand held computer came. It doesn't work anymore, but I still love it!
