T Stands for Manly Drinks in the Billiard Room at Blithewold

While on our way to the hotel for our trip to Newport, Rhode Island, Teague took me to visit Blithewold, a 45 room Summer "cottage" owned by the Van Wickle McKee family.  The name Blithewold is Old English for Happy Wood. The mansion is filled with family heirlooms and is surrounded by 33 acres of gardens and woodland overlooking Narragansett Bay.

The Billiard Room (technically that's a pool table)

Manly beverages include a giant Samovar. Though that might be a gas pump for the flying saucer on the right.

On the mantle a large stein pitcher, small stein, and a larger stein

View of Narragansett Bay

The saying on the stein pitcher reads:

Gut gekaut is
halb verdaut

Well chewed is half digested

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

Super cool pictures! Love that hanging angel. Happy T-day and hugz, CJ (I am not posting this week - just checking in to see what you are all up to).

The best of both worlds living by the water and in the woods.

The cherub lights were adorable. If I had a place to hang them, they might have gone into Cherub Relocation 😺

Those old estates have gorgeous architecture and what a great view! I am loving that China pitcher but what a strange saying to put on a piece of art.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate

I'm questioning the person who came up with that saying on the stein.....😕

CJ Kennedy said...

This is the literal translation. Perhaps Iris knows the meaning of the saying.

CJ Kennedy said...

Maybe someone who didn't chew their food 20 times before swallowing?

Lovely home, I like visiting spots like this.

It’s amazing to see those 19th century “cottages” — they seem so luxurious. But I suspect that our own ultrarich robber barons are living just as well, though they don’t let us tour the property.

It's nice to see how the other half lives

CJ Kennedy said...

They will. Once the properties become to expensive for them to maintain. Or as a gift to some historical society so that taxes don't have to be paid.

What an amazing place! I'd love to live in a house like that. But with servants to go with it i suppose....
The angel lamp is cute.
A strange saying on the jug. As the jug contains liquid and the quote refers to solid food. Oh, well.
Happy T Day,
Hugs,
Lisca

That is indeed a mansion! Wow! What a pretty view of View of Narragansett Bay through the window. Happy T Day.

Wow, why would anyone need 45 rooms? And it's only a "summer cottage"?

What a stunning and lovely old home. I especially like the old architecture. That light was amazing, too.

I immediately saw that stein on that mantle. You never want to eat with me. I am the slowest eater in the room. I bet I am slower than Iris. I always ask for a take out box about the time Sally is on her last few bites. I take my food home and enjoy it at my own slow leisure. Can't do that with a buffet, though.

Thanks for sharing this marvelous old home with us, as well as the stein for T this Tuesday, dear CJ.

My living room is the size of the foyer 😺

CJ Kennedy said...

Well, maybe the jug was supposed to be for beer. Beer is liquid bread.

CJ Kennedy said...

And the bay is the back of the house

They did a lot of entertaining

I inhale my food. I usually only eat half so I can take the other half home to inhale at my leisure 😺

Sorry I'm late for yesterday's T since it ended up being a crazy day. But wasn't it beautiful? I wish it would stay that way. And Blithewood does look beautiful. Image that as a summer cottage? Not my style...I hope you had a super T day-stay cool. hugs-Erika

I could live there. As long as there was the staff to take care of the house and gardens.😊

I would love to live there permanently. Though I would need the household staff, too. 😉
