T Stands For Hammond Castle - Part 1

After leaving the Gloucester Fishermen's Memorial, Teague followed the coast road to

Hammond Castle was the residence and workshop of inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr. His home was built in the style of a medieval castle and was a wedding present for his bride. The house took 3 years to build from 1926 to 1929.  Besides being a brilliant inventor, Hammond also collected art and artifacts from ancient Rome through the Renaissance. The castle provided the perfect backdrop for his collection.

A Green Man

The Great Hall

The pride of his collection, an 8,400 pipe organ. Hammond could not play the organ, but famous organists were invited to his home to play the instrument.

Hammond wasn't especially religious, but he did collect a lot of religious art. Hard to see in this display are objects used in Catholic Mass. I think if you looked hard enough you might see a chalice, my drink reference for this post.

Behind this eagle is the Bishop's Chair Alcove. I wasn't tall enough to see over it to get a picture of the chair. I think I read in the booklet that was given to us for the self-guided tour, it said, Hammond liked to dress as a monk and hang out in the chair. Besides being brilliant, he was quite eccentric.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

    1. Hammond Castle is closed for the season. Well, they do some sort of haunted thing for Halloween. The Castle reopens in the Spring. Check dates and times before you make the trip down.

  12. This looks a really interesting destination, I hope he added suitable heating for his new bride when he built it as the ones I am used to seeing here are very, very, cold in winter if you are not close by a fire.
    Happy T day wishes.

    1. Yeah, it was cool to visit, but I’m not sure I’d like living there. A lot of the rooms were very dark.

  16. Wow, what a visit. That castle was unusual and very different for here in the states. I would LOVE to hear that organ. Can you imagine the sound when all the pipes were in use?

I saw the Eucharist, but had trouble finding the challis. It was a clever take on your drink choice this week, though. Thanks for taking us to Hammond Castle and helping us find that challis for T this Tuesday. Sorry I was so late visiting. I'm having trouble catching up.

  19. What a fabulous castle house for his bride. An amazing story.Yes, I reckon he must have been a bit eccentric.
That organ is amazing! Interesting that with a name like 'Hammond', which I associate with organs, he couldn't play himself.
    Happy belated T-Day,
