Saturday Morning at the Library

When I was 5 years old, I was forced to take dancing lessons while the Brother was forced to take accordion lessons. I hated dancing class. The Knights of Columbus Hall where the classes were given had no heat or it wasn't turned on. I hated wearing the pink beginner tights. I liked clacking around in the tap shoes, but Ma wouldn't let me practice inside the house on the wood floors. I spent most of my time in class being miserable and crying. Eventually, I was taken out of class.

While the Brother still had to endure accordion lessons, Dad took me to the library. He would leave me upstairs in the children's library where I could look at the books and choose to take some books home with my own library card. As I got older, I would go downstairs to the adult library and wander among the stacks enjoying the scent of the books before going to find Dad in the reference area consulting the law books and catching up on his work.

So for the next several weeks, a list of my favorite books, some I have read as a child, others as an adult and some  I have read more than once.

This week, The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey . From Goodreads: Helva had been born human, but only her brain had been saved—saved to be schooled, programmed, and implanted into the sleek titanium body of an intergalactic scout ship. But first she had to choose a human partner—male or female—to share her exhilarating escapades in space!...Gifted with the voice of an angel and being virtually indestructible, Helva XH-834 anticipated a sublime immortality. Until one day...

If you haven't read this book, you can find it at your library or favorite bookstore.

  2. I've never read any Anne McCaffrey, but I have heard her name. This one sounds very sci-fi, but interesting. Did she also write a lot of dragon books, or am I thinking of someone else? Enjoy the sun before the rain arrives this weekend.

    1. I didn't read the Dragonrider series when she started the collaboration with her son, Todd. I didn't care for his writing style.

    1. With the CGI and special effects available now, I wish someone would make the Dragonriders of Pern into a movie. That would be awesome

  5. I've heard of McCaffrey, but don't think I've read any of her books. From the way Goodreads describes it, it reminds me of a cross between Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Battlestar Galactica.

  7. When I was very young we used to go to a small local library after school, when I got older I was allowed to go to the library in town on Saturdays - so much more choice. I haven't heard of that book - sounds interesting! Chrisx
