Whatcha Doin?

I'm trying to get our 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆(ducks in a row) assembling photographs, trying to get a copy of the police report to submit a claim to the insurance company because

on March 9, 2022 with an inch of snow on the ground, our mailbox and planter were brutally murdered. Horribly decapitated!

We're not sure of the time of the accident as we didn't hear anything though the Young One said around 2:30 AM she thought she heard a thunk and the sound of a soda can being crushed.

The morning after when I called the police, the dispatcher told me a report had been filled out (but needed the lieutenant to sign off on it). There was a witness and the police caught the driver.

Someone walked around

Part of a bumper or fender, and a hubcap got left in the ditch

The poor telephone pole took a hit again.

Looking back from the telephone pole, you can see the skid mark across the entire front yard, some 300 feet.

A piece of running lights and tire tracks to the phone pole

A bite taken out of the bottom of the phone pole.

Someone walked around. The driver? Police? We didn't see any flashing blue lights.

Side-view mirror behind the granite post

Start of the skid to the phone pole.

The mangled remains of the mailbox bracket to the left of the granite post

We're also waiting for the contractor to come out to assess the damage. To see if the mailbox/planter can be repaired with a new bracket or if there is damage to the post and the stone has to be replaced.

Later that day, the witness stopped by to tell us what he had seen. He was driving and saw the accident. He called the police and followed the car two miles to the grocery store parking lot. He said the guy's muffler was dragging and sparks were flying. The police caught up with the driver at the grocery store, the driver was cited, and the car was towed.

Whatch doin?

  2. Your poor mailbox! I'd be tempted to build a stone wall big enough to embed a mailbox in it. Drivers have trouble resisting your post :(

    1. The granite post is at least 4 feet from the road. There's also a cobblestone area in front so the mailman can drive right up to the box.

    2. Wow! I guess extending the post into a stone wall wouldn't make much difference. What a pain :(

  4. WTH is wrong with people these days anymore? (I know, A LOT!)

I am glad there was a witness and the police caught this crazy. There is simply no excuse for that kind of behavior in my book. Makes you wonder if he was drunk or something?

    1. According to the police report, he was cited for DUI (alcohol and drugs), speeding, marked lane violation

  5. with as many "parts" that came off the car; it's a wonder the muffler wasn't left somewhere as well....when I lived in Indy; someone took out my mailbox and post; sunny summer day, mid afternoon and kept right on driving....

glad this "person" was caught ~~~~

  6. Yay for the good Samaritan. We'll have a brief moment of silence for the decapitated mailbox.

    1. Thanks, Sandra. Yes, I'm glad that the witness called the police. Seems not a lot of people want to get involved nowadays

  7. Wow. I am surprised the drive just drove off because that is a lot of damage. We had 3 hooligans who took a baseball bat to our mailbox several years back, and they all ended up having to pay the cost for a new mailbox. Hope you get reimbursed too. And hurrah that they caught the guy too. Looks like it'll be cold tomorrow and wet. Hopefully no snow!

    1. No snow for us, but I hope you don't get the initial burst of snow before everything turns to rain

    1. And people think there is no excitement in a rural area

  9. When I first saw the accident, I thought this was not really an intentional ball bat to the mailbox "murder," but a drunk who lost control of his car. Glad there was a witness and glad he was cited. Hope you get reimbursed for your efforts, dear.
