T Stands for Gropius House - The Second Floor

Last Tuesday, I took you to visit the first floor of the Gropius House. This week, we shall tour the second floor.

The Master Bedroom sleeping area

Divided from the dressing area by a glass wall. This is Ise's (Mrs. Gropius) dressing table.

She was a clothing and jewelry designer. Here, some earring she made from hardware washers.

Master Bath

One of Ise's creations. Not my color, but I love the timeless silhouette of the dress

The guest room.

As I mentioned last week, the Gropius' entertained many guests such as Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, Henry Moore and Frank Lloyd Wright. Many of these guests brought artwork as a host/hostess gift. Art was all over the walls, but the only pieces I recognized were two in the guest room done by Joan Miro.

The move from Germany must have been a big upset for Gropius' 12 year old daughter, Ati. He wanted to make her a part of the design decisions when planning the house. So he asked her what kind of space did she want for her bedroom. Here is her sleeping alcove.

She wanted a sand floor, a glass ceiling so she could sleep under the stars, and her own entrance.

So, off her room, he created an outside deck with a pergola so she could sleep under the stars. The pink wall was so that sunlight wouldn't be too bright as it would have been if the wall was white.

Ati didn't get a sand floor, but the floor covering was sand colored. A concession. Opposite her desk was a daybed where she hung out with her friends. Too many people on the tour to get a picture.

Off the deck, Ati had her own metal, spiral staircase entrance. Rather scary in good weather, I wouldn't like to climb it during New England Winters.

From the deck, Ati could look down into a sun room and her mother's Japanese garden. During the Winter, Summer furniture was stored in the cellar and a ping pong table was moved into the sun room. Gropius played ping pong all Winter.

When the house was first built, there were not many trees on the property. The Gropius' would have been able to see Mt. Wachusett, the highest point in Massachusetts.

This is a photo of Ati lounging on her deck.

Ati would have to share her bathroom with any guests that were visiting.  The radiators in the bathrooms doubled as towel warmers during cold weather.

Ati's sky room over the living room.

Ati's private entrance. Gropius must have been a wonderful father to make his daughter's dream room come to life.

But like all dads, he wanted to keep a watchful eye on his daughter. Her spiral staircase entrance is just outside his office.

After visiting the Gropius House we debated going to the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, but I was getting really hungry so we decided to go find some place for lunch. Teague used to work in the area so we headed for tiny Lincoln Center as an app had told her a pizza restaurant was there. The pizza restaurant turned out to be in a gas station.

"Um, no." said the Little Princess.

So we started back towards home and came to Conrad's in Sudbury, Massachusetts. We both have traveled by this location many times. I knew it as a Mexican restaurant. Teague said it had been lots of different restaurants.

I ordered an Arnold Palmer. Teague either had a Sprite or water. I forget.

The restaurant had a bar area that was doing a brisk business and a dining area. It was a little late for lunch so not many people in the restaurant.

We each decided to start with a cup of New England clam chowder (chowdah). A perfect choice on a hot and humid day. 😉

Teague had a turkey club sandwich. I had fish and chips served with Cole slaw.

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  1. Lovely pics of the Gropius House, and it all looks so tidy - I wonder if it was like that when they were living there? Your food and drinks sound good, too, you had a wonderful trip. Happy T Day, Valerie

    1. According to the tour guide, the house was set up and decorated as it was in 1969, the year Gropius passed away.

  2. I like a big fluffy bed so those beds did not look very comfy to me, and I agree about the stairs. BUT they are really nice style. This house is fascinating. And the dress is gorgeous and still something that would work today. Thanks so much for sharing. I enjoyed the visit. Hugs-Erika

    1. Yeah, some of the furniture was not to my taste, but still a very livable design

  3. Those bedrooms didn't impress me at all, except for the art. Of course, I liked Ati's desk. Sort of a cross between Art Deco and mid-century modern. I LOVED the two Miros, and the art above Ati's desk, though. Looked a bit like a Picasso to me.

An outdoor deck or desk? Did I read wrong? Still, it was a beautiful area, and I would have loved having that as a child. Not so much as an adult, though.

I don't think I could live in the Boston area, CJ. I complain about high prices of food in Wichita, but it pales in comparison to what you paid for your lunch. BTW, I've had a LOT of shrimp scampi in my life. It's the one thing I buy if it's on the menu. However, I've NEVER had it served with tomatoes before. To me that is sacrilege.

Thanks for taking us back to the Gropious House and to Conrad's for lunch and an Arnold Palmer. The little princess didn't want to eat in a gas station? I can't POSSIBLY imagine why not (grin).

    1. Oops, my bad. Thanks for finding that typo. outdoor deck. The rooms are meant to be functional not really comfortable. I suppose if the rooms were very comfy, Gropius might not have been able to get rid of his guests. 😺Yup, it's very expensive to live on either coast. And with prices that high, not way the Little Princess would eat gas station pizza. 😉

    1. I thought Gropius' design to interpret Ati's wishes was brilliant. I would have loved to have her suite. And I loved the way he was going to keep an eye on who was coming and going to visit his daughter. 😺

  8. I want those earrings! :) And that hanging behind the bed is beautiful. I'd have had trouble deciding between your fish and her club sandwich. Those are both go-to selections for me when I'm at a restaurant :) Happy T Tuesday!

  10. Great photos of the second floor. of the house you visited. The bedrooms looked very modern in style and seemed to me to lack any homely touches.
He must have loved his daughter so much to design
her a room that gave her a unique personal entrance.
    Happy T day Wishes.

    1. I think the idea of the Bauhaus is clean with no clutter. (I need to embrace this😊) The homey touches would have been the bookcases, furniture, and all the artwork.

    1. That would be so cool, but the deck would have to be screened in. No bugs 😺

  12. More great photos from this wonderful looking house. I love spiral staircases. Your food looked good. And I do think our weather has been about the same. (Today NOAA says we have a slight chance for a tornado in the afternoon, and I did a double take. Odds are it won't happen, thankfully.) Happy (belated) T-Day! (I'm late commenting.)

    1. Never worry about being late. I'm always happy you stop by to visit.

Weather seems to be getting more violent. Things like tornadoes that were fluke for our area (like the Worcester tornado in 1953) are now happening with more frequency (Monson, MA 6/2011 and 3 tornadoes this year on the Cape!) I hope your area is spared.

  13. What a wonderful house! I just love it. Love the wall hanging in the first bedroom. And such a lovely idea to let Ati choose what she wanted. And I smiled at the spiral staircase being in view from daddy's desk. The famous artwork is amazing. To have that in your room...
Your food looks really nice. I wish we could get fish and chip here. We can get it on the coast which is a good few hours drive away.
    Sorry for the late comment.
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Hugs,
