T Stands For My Favorite Sandwich

When I was a kid my favorite sandwich was peanut butter and jelly. It was practically the only thing I ate when I was 5 years old that they called me the Peanut Butter Kid.  I hated grilled cheese sandwiches so on grilled cheese day at school, Mrs. Burns, a neighbor and the school dietitian, would have a peanut butter sandwich for me as I went through the lunch line. What me spoiled? I must have overdosed on the PB because I don't really care for it much. I will eat it if I'm too lazy to make something else or there's nothing else in the house. I learned to eat grilled cheese. Not my favorite, but it will do in a pinch.

So it may come as a surprise that as an adult my favorite sandwich is a Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo is a ham and cheese sandwich made fancy by dipping it in egg and fried like French toast. The sandwich is then dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of raspberry jam.

I was first introduced to the Monte Cristo during the late 1970s or early 1980s at a restaurant in Framingham, Massachusetts called Bumbershoots. Bumbershoots used better bread and a fancier cheese like Swiss rather than Arnold Bread and American cheese I used in my sandwich. Sadly, Bumbershoots is no longer in business.

And what happened to the Peanut Butter Kid? She overdosed on PB & J and only eats it now if there's nothing left in the house to make sandwiches with or she's too lazy to cook.

What's your favorite sandwich?

  1. Enjoy your sandwich. I like peanut butter with salt, but not jelly. As a kid my daughter was a Nutella princess, she didn't want to eat anything else. Happy T Day, Valerie

  2. Fun post-we don't eat sandwiches any more and with having to be gluten free for so many years now a sandwich is a treat with a gluten free bread-mostly a homemade hamburger with a bun is a treat for me-and I made us those with french fries over the weekend. I do also love gluten free raisin and cinnamon bread made into a peanut butter sandwich-never liked the jelly or jam even as a kid Happy T wishes Kathy

  4. What a sweet PB story and, believe it or not, I never had one!

Huargh. When I was 5 I had salami-sandwich with sweet whipped cream, that´s your Monte Christo seems to be like. Örks, I´d have to puke on the salami thingy!
Mine is now: Toast Hawaii! :-) 🍍

    1. Never hear of porkroll sandwiches here in New England. It must be a regional thing, but it sounds good.

  7. I've never had a Monte Cristo or knew how you make it. It is almost like a breakfast sandwich, isn't it? And looks good. I love PB and J and I love a grilled cheese, but no ham please. I never heard of Bumbershoots but then a lot of those good old places have gone away. Do you still have any Friendly's around? Not here. Enjoy your sandwich and happy T day CJ. Hugs-Erika

    1. I think most of the Friendly’s restaurants have closed. Too bad, they were a good place for breakfast and lunch

  8. Your sandwich sounds good! I used to enjoy a peanut butter and banana toasted sandwich (Elvis Sandwich) but unfortunately I can't eat nuts anymore due to allergies 😁. My favourite now has to be a bacon butty, so yummy ...lol 😀. Wishing you a very Happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x

  9. I grew up eating pnb & grape jelly for lunch every day, and I've always liked cheese toast and grilled cheese sandwiches. I've never heard of the Monte Cristo. The traditional club sandwich would be my favorite, I guess, but I've never made one. Or maybe chicken salad? Or tuna salad? I may not actually have a favorite lol

    Happy T Tuesday!

  12. Those are delicious! (My wrist is starting to give out, just doing the paste of the below comment. Ugh.)

Happy T-Day! (I'm leaving a generic comment for everyone this week, because I'm very sore after each day's storm clean up efforts. Tropical Storm Isaias clobbered Connecticut US August 4, 2020.)

  13. I have three favorite sandwiches: Monte Cristo, French Dip and Reuben. Your PB&J school lunches were healthier than what I ate until all through my elementary school years. I couldn't stand any of the cafeteria food. So I packed my own lunch: potato chips and mayonnaise between two slices of Wonder Bread.

Happy T-day and have a lovely week! Hugs, Eileen

    1. In Elementary school, we had pretty good hot lunches all for a quarter. The problem was you had to eat every. single. bite. or the nuns would make you sit in the cafeteria forever. Mrs. Burns knew I hated grilled cheese so whenever grilled cheese was served (usually every other Friday), she had a peanut butter sandwich ready for me. Otherwise, I'd still be sitting in the cafeteria to this day! 😺 Wonder bread was the best. One of the factories was located in the town where I grew up. Such a delicious smell driving by the factory

  14. I have never heard of a Monte Cristo but is sounds like nothing I have ever had. I don't eat sandwiches anymore since I don't eat gluten (sadly) but I loved Italian hoagies growing up.
    Happy Tea day,

  15. Peanut butter and jelly are my go to food when I don't feel like cooking. I make my own peanut butter and now my own jams. I never could get into the Monte Cristo but I am glad you have a favorite sandwich. Have a nice day.

  16. almost every day around noon i have peanut butter on toast. I don't care for traditional grilled cheese but at a place called the Taproom they have a 3 cheese with parmesan crusted sour dough that is out of this world.
    never had a montechristo

  17. In one of the Mind of a Chef series Gabrielle Hamilton, the NY chef, has a scene where she deep fries a Monte Christo sandwich, and it really looked great. She says they have to be made on Pepperidge Farm sandwich white bread! I don’t think she used the sweets. In another episode, she talks about the fried egg on a roll, another good-sounding sandwich of her earlier days. I think every sandwich mentioned in the comments so far sounds good.

  18. I thought I had been here, but guess not. Oh, my goodness, I love a Monte Crsito! I didn't even know what it was until we moved 2 years ago, and they had it on the menu at a restaurant near us! Theirs was large and very filling!!! And so sweet.
    Happy Belated T Day!
