T Stands For Morgenmuffel

A Facebook friend had posted this meme and I learned a new vocabulary word. I studied German in college, know a few words and phrases, and can put a few simple sentences together. This word just tickled me. Say it with me. Mor-gen-muf-fel.

I excitedly told my friend, Fraue, who teaches German that I had learned a new word. She also told me that you can add Muffel to almost any word. Another German Facebook friend chimed in with Muffelkopf (grumpy head), someone who is always grumpy.

Ich bin  Morgenmuffel

I wanted to add Hier ist meine Muffeltasse. Here is my grumpy cup, but Fraue said Muffeltasse is silly.

Did you study another language in school?

Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.

  1. Ich bin ein Morgenmuffel! I always get up early, but need at least 3 coffees to get normal! At school we learnt French, Latin and ancient Greek. Later I learnt Spanish and Hebrew. In my family people spoke English, Yiddish and some German and Russian. And when I got to Germany I had to learn German. Now you know all my guilty secrets! Happy T Day, Valerie

  2. I had one semester of German in high school, but don't remember much. I think I can still count to 10 in German, but that's about it. One semester isn't enough to learn a language, except I remember we learned high German, not low (or common) German.

Gosh, I guess you couldn't call me a morgenmuffel because I'm awake when most in the states are asleep. I LOVE that Grinch mug, though. I also like the black cat that does what it wants. It's adorable. Thanks for teaching us a new word (I DO remember Ich bin) and sharing your adorable mugs with us for T this Tuesday.

I actually have YOU to thank for the teacup image I created for the 7th anniversary. I got the idea from Ink in a tea cup a few weeks back.

  4. I also took German in college and only remember a few words. But I never heard of this one either. I do love how German so logically lumps bits together to make new words, but some of them are so long. Have a great T day and hope you are not being a morganmuffel today. And not getting storms either. Hugs-Erika

    1. I'm not a Morgenmuffel now as I've had 2 cups of tea. No storms yet though some are predicted for this afternoon. Storms predicted for yesterday afternoon went around me.

  7. I'm not a morning person until I've had my vert large mug of tea. French was the foreign language we were encouraged to learn at school, which worked well when we took the caravan to France while the family were young and it really helped when we shopped in the small villages.
    Happy T day wishes.

  8. Ha- we both used other language words to introduce our posts today:):) Fun learning new words and languages. I had many years of French and a few years of Spanish which also helps me with a bit of the Italian language too. I love the "romance" languages especially. Happy T day!

  12. Morgenmuffel and muffelkopf are terrific words. I marvel at how people who speak German can make up long words as they go. They probably wonder why the rest of us find it confusing. And I wonder who arbitrates which words are legitimate and which are just silly, like Muffeltasse, which sounds pretty clever to me.

I studied French in HS and college. My mother as a bit of a snob. I would have taken Spanish because we lived much closer to Spanish speaking countries. But she insisted French was elegant and necessary. So now I live in Mexico and struggle to learn Spanish on my own.

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen

    1. French has always been considered the language of diplomacy so perhaps that influenced your mother's decision. Or she dreamt of a trip to Paris and could live that dream vicariously through you, if you got a chance to go to France.

  14. What a wonderful word! I speak reasonable German, but I didn't know this word. great! I learnt a new word!
I am definitely NOT a morning person. In fact, I don't function before midday. So I am an enormous Morgenmuffel! (Actually, I'm not grumpy, I just don't function)
Languages.... you got me here on my favorite subject. In elementary school we did Dutch and a bit of French. Then in secondary school we learnt English, German and French as well as our native Dutch. Then later in secondary school I also took latin and ancient Greek and ancient Hebrew. After that, I studied modern Hebrew as I spent time in Israel. I moved to Italy and learned to be fluent in Italian. Now I live in Spain and of course I have learnt to speak Spanish. I am conversant in all the languages I mentioned except for Latin and Hebrew. I forgot most of those and I struggle with French. I can read it but speaking is slow.
So similar to Valerie I suppose. We seem to have had similar educations.
    Happy (belated) T-Day,
    Lisca

  15. I've changed over the years. When I was very young, I used to sleep in and was a night owl. Now I'm an early bird. But either way, I needed coffee to wake up. :-) Happy belated T-Day!

  16. What a fabulous word! I studied French and German at school! I failed my French exam and took lessons at tech college and passed with a good grade - the teachers there were both brilliant! Sadly I didn't get on with the German teacher and gave it it up as soon as I could. I have used it in Germany and Austria to get by, but French is the language I use most of course! I was once mistaken for a French person! Uh! Oh! theres a reminder that I won't get to France this year!! I have since dabbled with a little bit of Italian - but I'm not very good! Love that Grinch mug! Belated Happy T Day! Chrisx
