During Birthday Month (July), I had mentioned the Young One requested a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and flavored with orange. I decided I would bake one of the recipes from Ma's recipe box. Starlight Double Delight Cake.
Ma had a recipe she clipped from a magazine back in the 1950s or 1960s. The original recipe called for the flavoring to be peppermint extract. I'm not a huge fan of peppermint so I either use raspberry extract or orange extract instead. The cool thing about this cake is that it makes the frosting at the same time you're making the batter. You can find the recipe by following the link above. Oh, and when the recipe says mix on low speed, follow the directions.
When baked, cooled, and frosted, serve the cake with tea or coffee in whatever clean cup you have available.
Drop by hosts, Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog to find out what the rest of the T Stands For gang is up to. If you want to play, include in your Tuesday post a beverage or container for a beverage. Don't forget to link your blog to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's page.
This looks sooooooo good, I will be craving all day now. Good job I'm going shopping with my neighbour later on! Happy T Day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteAnd then you'll stop at the cafe and have a lovely pastry with your cappuccino. I hope we get to see pictures next week.
DeleteThis looks delicious. Is the cake moist? I love chocolate, but I usually don't like chocolate cake because it is dry.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, it's a bit dense. I'm not sure I would call it dry, but it's not really light and fluffy like a cake mix.
DeleteOoh, yes please I'd love a piece of this yummy looking cake! Orange and chocolate sounds delicious 😀. Thanks for the recipe and wishing you a Happy T Day! Take care! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeleteChocolate with orange (Grande Marnier) is one of my favorite flavor combinations
DeleteBeautifully Delightful - Big Hugs
ReplyDeleteCheers
😊
DeleteSanta woke up in your place, too? All full of this here also, help!
ReplyDeleteYup, Santa lives here year round. 😺
DeleteYum! Save me a piece, lol. ;)
ReplyDeleteToo late 😺
DeleteI read the directions because I couldn't figure out how you create the cake and frosting at the same time. It looks beautiful. I'm definitely impressed and I bet the young one appreciated all the work you put into it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the recipe (I would NEVER use anything but real butter). It was definitely a sign of the times with the Crisco. I remember my Grandmother had an entire large pamphlet of recipes put out by that company.
Then I laughed until I sneezed at the statement "in whatever clean cup you have available." Loved it. Thanks for sharing the recipe and your clean cup of tea with us for T this Tuesday, dear CJ.
BTW, you went over and above on that box of goodies. It was Christmas and my birthday all rolled into one!!!
Enjoy the goodie box.
DeleteFor every birthday my son or hubby have they have to have chocolate cake with chocolate frosting:) I love that you add a touch of other flavoring and will check out the recipe- thanks! Happy T day!
ReplyDeleteIt's a nice recipe and if you don't like peppermint, orange, or raspberry flavoring, you can just add a little extra vanilla.
Deletei liked reading about this .... interesting about the frosting. I love peppermint... anything...
ReplyDeleteyour post reminded me that when my mom died she had a good size plastic tub with all her receipes in it. I saved off a few and put them aside and placed the tub somewhere and in the move after we sold some how it got thrown out. Nice that you have your mom's recipes.
Ma clipped most of the recipes from magazines. She had a few hand-written ones and those I've kept.
Deletemom too - clipped from magazines and of course handwritten ones also
DeleteI just printed that very clever recipe. We don't like peppermint either. And "exotic" aren't available here. All I have on hand besides vanilla are lemon, almond and spiced rum (from a vacation in Puerto Rica). What do you think? I'm leaning toward the spiced rum.
ReplyDeleteHappy T-day and have a lovely week! Hugs, Eileen
You could use the vanilla and almond, but I bet the spiced rum would be fabulous!
DeleteThe cake looks scrumptious and I like the substitution of the raspberry for peppermint. I plan to head over to the recipe after commenting. Thank you. Happy T Day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading
DeleteWow ~ Yum ~ I printed the recipe to see if my daughter wants to give it a go. If she does, I'll let you know ~ Happy T day!
ReplyDeleteI hope she likes it
DeleteWhen you give out the slices of that cake, include me in! Sounds delicious. Using an early portion of the cake batter, before eggs, is an ingenious way to make the frosting.
ReplyDeletebe well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
The makes its own frosting is what I like about this cake
DeletePS -- I did a google search and found that this cake recipe won the grand prize in the 1951 Pillsbury Bake-Off!

How cool is that! Thanks, Mae
DeleteI am off to have a look at this recipe. Your cake looks delicious and I love the idea that it makes the frosting at the same time.
ReplyDeleteHappy Tea Day,
Kate
The don’t need to make or buy frosting sold me on the recipe
DeleteIt sure looks good. And I love how you get the frosting t the same time you mix the cake. I printed off the recipe to give it a try. Hope it was a happy T day and your wind isn't too nasty. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteNasty enough to knock lots of trees down around town. Power went out around 6p though the powerwall took over so we have electricity to run the well to flush the toilet. 💃🕺
DeleteOh wow...that looks so good! I can never say no to chocolate. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy T day!
It’s a pleaser
DeleteOh yumm! That looks really delicious. So I went directly to the recipe, thing I could make it, but alas, six cups of confectioners sugar is just not going to happen. They sell it here in little pots. To fill 6 cups, I would need about 24 little pots! (And it's not cheap). I have tried to make my own in my food processor, but I can't get it as fine as what you buy in the shops. Too bad...
ReplyDeleteHappy (belated) T-Day,
Hugs,
Lisca
Oh, that's too bad. The confectioner's sugar is needed because that and the cream cheese make part of the frosting.
DeleteSpeaking of which, I didn't check my birthday list. Wringing my hands. Belated Happy BDay. Hope it was wondrous.
ReplyDeleteNo worries, Sandra. It was a nice day. We did take out. I had a Key Lime Pie and no candles. At my age, we would have had to get a burn permit from the Fire Chief. 😺
DeleteOh My! That does look good! I made a banana loaf this afternoon - too many bananas going ripe! Belated Happy T Day, Chrisx
ReplyDelete😋 I made zucchini cupcakes from a garden zucchini
DeleteThat does look yummy :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Nom nom nom... I checked out the recipe and have put cream cheese on my shopping list. Thx!
