The Friday Five Good Things

Five good things that happened this week.

1. Made Himself corned beef, an Irish soda bread, and brownies for St. Patrick's Day

2. We watched The Quiet Man on TCM

3. Texted the Eldest to see how she was doing. Most likely she'll be laid off her new job which she started 3 weeks ago. The hospital is still interested in her for the lab job.

4. The Dawn Patrol went to the grocery store during the special Senior hours of 6 - 7 AM to reconnoiter toilet paper, paper towels, and facial tissue.

5. Score!

How was your week?

  1. Your week doesn't sound bad at all. No senior shopping hours here, pity! It would make things easier! And I hate staying home, but am trying to make the best of it. Valerie

    1. As most of my weeks go, this was a pretty good one.

  2. I like how you described your trip to the grocery store. I was thinking of starting a new email chain with you, with the subject line: "All quiet on the covid front" but I didn't get to that yet. (Plus, there are no new significant developments here to mention, but the day is young.) Other than the current "situation" we're all working around, it sounds like you had a good week. I'm sorry about your Eldest facing unemployment due to this whole mess.

    1. The Eldest isn't alone in this situation, and I'm hoping the hospital job comes through for her.

  3. We're talking about doing one of those early morning runs to the grocery store. Glad you scored. We've been eating pretty well these days since people aren't so tired at night. Hope you don't get too stir crazy. Hugs-Erika

    1. I don't mind staying at home. There's lots to do. Making art, cleaning, playing on the computer. As my mother would say if you're bored, it's your own fault.😺

  4. We have those early morning openings here too and I'm so glad that you scored at the grocery store - yay! We are staying at home as much as possible and as my dad is incredibly high risk I've been shopping for my mum and dad as they have been advised to self isolate for 12 weeks. Wishing you a happy Friday and weekend! Stay safe and healthy! Hugs, Jo x

  5. The early morning 'senior' shopping is waaaaaay too early for me! So I guess I'll either miss out or make do, lol.
(Thinking about the Eldest....are the labs looking for people to help with Covid testing? Is that something she could do? Just a thought.) Hang in there! We'll make it through this! :)

    1. Yes, I'm sure most hospitals dare doing the Covid-19 testing in house. She has been trained in all dept. of the lab: chemistry, hematology, blood bank, coag/urine, and microbiology. I think the Covid test is automated and uses a special machine, but I don't think it would require a lot of training to run. She uses other machines in other dept. for test. I'm not sure what the hold up is for her being hired.

    2. I know that St. Joseph Hospital is testing here in our area. They have put in a drive thru.

  6. Wow, I was just ready to leave a comment early this morning when ONCE again I got kicked off the internet.

I was at the store yesterday and, not that I need it, there was no TP, no napkins, no diapers. Also, no canned veggies and fresh were so picked over you didn't want them. No bread or potatoes to be found, either. They limited the amount of soup, milk, and eggs you could buy, too. I was there about 11ish. Have no idea if they (or any KS store) have early shopping or not. What was on my list I couldn't get were potatoes. I bet the Irish famine has hit our country (grin). It's very obvious you had a much better week than I had. Even without the internet, I got nothing accomplished. I just stressed over not being able to be online. Other than that, I have no qualms about staying home. I'm fairly certain I won't catch the virus from my "boys." I like what your mom said about being bored, too. I like that attitude!!

I hope the eldest gets the lab job. I also hope she's safe in that job, too.

    1. I forgot to check for eggs and will need them on the next run. The only bread available was the bakery bread. All the sliced bread, including the really expensive slice bread was gone. Not even a crumb. No big deal to me. I got another bag of flour and will bake bread as it's something I like to do.

    2. Oh, and thanks for your good wishes for the Eldest.

  7. Senior hours are cropping up all over, along with limits on how much you can buy of that rare toilet paper. Hospitals may be increasing staffing, so I hope that job works out.

    1. Yeah, I told her this situation may work to her advantage as all the hospital labs will need extra hands

    3. Yeah, and now the rest of the world knows Brady's the Goat, Greatest Of All Time, and suddenly not a cheater any more. Boston knew that all the time. 😺

  9. Glad you got what you needed. Last time we were at the store a few days back there were not paper products at Staters except for paper plates. Now the thing I need to find is bread, preferably a five grain bread that we use to pick up at Aldi. We have to go down the mountain though for specific things that aren't carried up here. Our week was very low key. We were suppose to have a grandson next week because of what would have been his spring break but now that ism't happening. That's too bad about your girl just getting her job 3 weeks ago and now this. We plan on getting in the jeep today and seeing how clear the roads are and possibly heading down the mountain. So my "chef" cooked chicken in a crock pot, shredded it and made me great chicken tacos with lots of cilantro, onions, cheese, yum! Having leftovers tonight.

    1. There was no bread available except the bakery bread and I didn’t want that. I bought a bag of flour and will bake my own bread. When I went to pick up the mail this morning at the post office, I was surprised by how much traffic was roaring up and down the highway. And it wasn’t all trucks carrying goods. Hope the roads are clear and you find the things you need.
