T Stands for Homemade Bagels

I love bagels for breakfast especially cinnamon raisin bagels, toasted slathered in butter or with a flavored cream cheese like honey walnut.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran out of the bagels I buy. We had already been to the grocery store, and I didn't want to run out just for some bagels. What's a girl to do? She makes her own. I used this recipe and added some raisins and a tablespoon or so of cinnamon to the dough.

The recipe was easy to follow. The risen bagels looked great until they had to be boiled before baking. I should have taken process photos, but didn't. I don't know if the water was still at a boil instead of a simmer or if I left the bagels in the water too long.( I didn't think I left them in the water too long) When the bagels were removed from the bath, they deflated and didn't bake up as high as the commercial bagels though they smelled like heaven while baking and they tasted just fine and went well with my cup of tea. They were just really thin so not much bagel when split in half to butter or spread with cream cheese. I think next time, I'll skip the boil and just bake them. They'll be more like rolls, but I can still call them bagels.

Did you have better luck baking your own bagels?

    1. You're welcome. Is there a secret so they don't deflate in the hot water?

  6. It honestly never occurred to me to make my own bagels, but yours certainly turned out well. I wouldn't mind them being thinner, and since they tasted delicious that's a win :) The grinch mug is a nice touch :) Happy T Tuesday!

  9. I love bagels and cream cheese! The best ones I've had were on my American travels, it was a little bagel shop in Las Vegas - they were so good that we went there for breakfast during our stay, so yummy 😀. I've never tried to make them though so thanks for sharing the recipe! Loving the Grinch mug too! Happy T Day wishes! Hugs, Jo x

  16. I'm finally back online. Thanks for joining this week's T party. Next week we will use Inlinkz because you can remove your link and start over again if you make a mistake. Be sure to use ONLY your name in the "caption" and not your blog post, please.

Had to laugh. I don't bake. I don't want to turn the hot stove on in the summer, much less the oven. BUT, I think your bagel looks GREAT. Love the Grinch. So apropos (grin). Thanks for joining T Tuesday, dear CJ.

  17. Your bagel looks OK to me. I bet it tasted heavenly. I have never made bagels. As we don't have them here, I wouldn't know what they are supposed to look like. So yours would do fine for me. I'll just have a little nibble from yours if you don't mind....
    Have a good week,
    Lisc

  19. Chris and I used to try and make bagels. Some were okay. I think there's law that you must boil bagels before baking or you can't call them bagels. Sort of like the laws for Chanpagne.

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen
