While walking along Ogunquit Beach, I saw a crab
and another one
There seemed to be a whole lot of them. Were they washed up from the ocean or are these baby crabs hatching and making a run for the water?
It seems that Green Crabs from Europe are upsetting the eco-systems and wreaking havoc along the Maine Coast.
Kids were picking up the creatures and flinging them into the ocean as savage amusement. The parents were no better grabbing pails and buckets and scooping up the crabs. We couldn't help wonder, don't you need a license to fish/crab/clam? And more importantly, were these actual Green Crabs?
With all the commotion, the seagull had to march off in search of French fries instead of dining on succulent crab.
Amazing photos :D

DeleteSome humans have no respect for other forms of life.
ReplyDeleteThe parents were worse than the kids.
DeleteWe have green crabs in an area we fish. We've caught fish and the crabs are hanging off the bait. I haven't seen them on beaches though like you did. And you're right, I wonder if they are green crabs or something native. Hope you don't get any crazy storms today.
ReplyDeleteThe weather dudette was saying we might get some thunderstorms this afternoon.
DeleteLove Ogunquit! Perhaps the storm systems disrupted the ecosystem somewhat and brought all these crabs to shore?
ReplyDeleteI saw on an official Ogunquit Beach site, that the Green Crabs are an invasive species brought over from Europe. There were calls for volunteers on certain days/times to come help clear the beaches of these invaders. But I have no idea if the crabs I photographed are that particular invasive species.

DeleteUnfortunately I can't answer your questions for sure, but Google Lens says it's a green crab. Maybe that's why people had no respect for the crabs? (Or do they have no respect for nature in general?) Anyway, I like your photos...
ReplyDeleteIt's a pitty that the seagull didn't get a crab meal.
All the best from Austria, Traude
