T Stands for Yes, We Have No Bananas

I hate grocery shopping. Himself did the grocery shopping for his mother so when we got married, he was already trained for grocery shopping. He didn't seem to mind so that became his chore. Having difficulty walking makes a circuit around the grocery store fatiguing for Himself. He's been a good sport, but the walking takes a lot out of him.

I decided I would do the grocery shopping online. A perfect solution for me since I hate to go to the store. Point and click, point and click, and the groceries are delivered a few days later. Online shopping is fine if you don't need items right away as it seems lots of people are doing their grocery shopping online and it may take a few days before you can get a delivery time. I don't wait until I'm out of Half n'Half to put my order in so I don't mind the wait.

Shopping online is a bit different than shopping in store. Produce items are selected by the each and not by a pound or a bunch.  I ordered 6 bananas, finished the rest of my list and waited for the text the driver had arrived with the groceries.

Himself sits by the refrigerator and will put away the items that need to be refrigerated or frozen. As I go through the bags in the porch, I bring those things in first. I found the first bag with the bananas and then another bag, and another bag. Bags and bags of bananas.

Six hands of bananas! Over 40 individual bananas! Somewhere between my placing the order, and the order being shopped and shipped, bananas went from each to a hand.

The driver must have thought we needed a diet to curb "the runs" or we were running a primate center!

Fortunately, bananas can be frozen. I peeled the bananas, individually wrapped some of them whole in plastic wrap, tucked them in freezer bags and laid them in the freezer. A few bananas I cut into coins. Froze the banana slices on baking sheets in the big freezer (the sun room) and then placed the coins in small bags and into the freezer. Whew! So, who wants a smoothie?

I know some of you like to use ephemera in your art. I saved the stickers and have enough to send to two people. If you would like some banana stickers, let me know in the comments and I'll randomly draw two names. I'll announce who gets the stickers on Monday, 1. February 2021.

And to end, a favorite, audience participation number at Harry Chapin concerts. 30,000 Pounds of Bananas. You can read the lyrics here

  2. ... "trained for grocery shopping" - you made me laugh, sounds like the Pawlowsch-dog-experiment!

Oh, boy, you need some chimpanzees there, LOL (sorry, but WHAT?! 40 bananas???)
Yups, I freeze them, too, for smoothies.
Ohhh, Chiquita had such cute ads with frogs, just google "Chiquita banana ad frog" in case you don´t know already.

Oh, what a song. Hubby takes one (!) banana to work every day.
    Happy T-day!

    1. If there were 6 hands of bananas with an average of 6 or 7 bananas on them, that would be 36 to 42 total bananas. Wild, right? I didn't know about the frogs and bananas very cute. Too bad you didn't live closer, you could have taken a hand of bananas for Ingo.

  3. Oh my, that's a lot of bananas! I didn't know you could freeze them so I'm going to give it a try next time we have some going spare ...lol 😉. At least you won't need to order any more for a while - Happy T Tuesday! Hugs, Jo x

    1. Freezing bananas is best if you are going to be making smoothies or using in baking. Freezing changes the texture dramatically so if you want to eat bananas out of hand, don't freeze them.

  4. Everyone is challenged by the food ordering situation. At Whole Foods, ordering from amazon.com, broccoli is by the bunch (maybe 3 stems) but broccoli crowns are by the piece. Leeks are by the piece, green onions by the bunch. SO it goes. In some stores, the individual doing the shopping makes the decisions so it's even crazier.

  5. This is a good laugh. I love this. It is a perfect fun T day post, especially with the glass you put in the photo.(And I'll use banana stickers too). Like you, grocery shopping is not high on my list of fun things to do, but like your husband, it is my husband's favorite shopping. Unfortunately for him though, with his suppressed immune system, he hasn't really been able to go. Oh well, grin and bear it. Hope you don't get too much snow tonight. Hugs-Erika

  9. Ohh that is too funny about the bananas. I tried to sign up for "shopping on line" but I was told they are booked up and not taking any new customers. That is fine I go shopping At 6Am when the store opens and no customers there. Before freeze some of those bananas be sure to dip them in chocolate. LOL Have a great day.

  10. You were lucky your husband shopped for you for so many years. I'm so lucky I have Scott. I couldn't afford the extra cost they want for shopping for me in the town where I live. Not sure what you are charged, but here they tell you it is 3% of your total bill that will be added for shopping for you. That may not be much to some people, but to me (based on my latest bill) it would buy at least six packs of ramen noodles that I could live on for a week.

I really enjoyed reading this banana-fa-fo-famma-ramma tale. Thankfully, I always ask Scott to get at least ONE banana sticker when he buys bananas for me (3 max each time I get them).

Thanks for sharing your incredible and humorous tale about bananas with us for T this Tuesday, along with your glass of water.

    1. The service I use has a flate rate delivery charge of $6.95. If you aren't fussy about the time window, you get get up to $3.00 off the delivery charge. Usually it means getting your groceries delivered any where from 3:30 PM to 10 PM. For a $3.00 savings, that's fine by me. Tipping the driver is optional, but I usually tip 15% of my bill. I'm grateful for them to do the chore I hate doing.

  11. Oh my- so funny but that is A LOT of bananas!! Good idea to freeze them. I do that also- for banana bread and smoothies as well. My hubby is NOT a grocery shopping kind of person, and actually unless I get sick I'm fine with doing it myself. After all, I do all the cooking as well:) Happy T day!

  12. That is SO funny! We go through about 25 bananas a week but I always freeze the ones we don't use. I liked your tip of freezing them in coin size slices. I am going to do this! It will save a lot of room vs freezing whole bananas in a bag. Enjoy those smoothies.
    Happy Tea Day,
    Kate

  14. Wow brings back memories. I saw Harry Chapin at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in the 70's ....also saw Carly Simon, Cat, Stevens, hmmm. Randy Newman there also. Anyway ... that is a lot of bananas. i am weird about bananas they have to be almost not ripe, bordering on ripe but no black marks, lol I drive my husband crazy with my weird eating habits. I had no idea you could freeze bananas. I've been throwing out so many since Mike hasn't been here to help eat them. I am snowed in and there will be no store trips for me for probably a good week. Even more snow coming ...storms lining up and next one starts Thursday and Friday. We already have about 2 feet of snow all around and it will take until mid spring to thaw no doubt, ugh. If you ever see the movie Elton that came out awhile ago some of it was filmed at the Troubadour - I was almost jumping up and down when I saw him in the movie singing ..it was great!

    1. I must have seen Harry 5 or 6 times when he came to this area. My friend, Teague, really liked him. It always amazed me with the beautiful songs he wrote, during the concerts someone would be screaming sing "Bananas" 😺

I saw something that said the Sierra's were going to get 6 feet of snow! We just got a few inches of snow today. Weather dudes are hinting about a more significant storm for Monday probably the one you are getting on Friday making it's way here.

Next time, you'll know not to throw those too ripe for you to eat bananas away. Freeze them. The freezing changes the texture so they will only be good to use in smoothies or baking.

      Stay warm and stay safe

    2. wow, fun to read how many times you saw Harry Chapin. I truly can't remember the song Bananas. Now I have to go look it up. It's amazing how much snow we have already got in the last four days or so and with freezing temps at night nothing is melting. I'm sure the other side of the lake where the sun is has already melted. I can look out over my deck towards that area and see all evergreen trees with no snow - only snow on some roofs. I'm getting a little resentful at their sunshine and melt. So I have to chill out - choose peace and throw on a jacket in the house even. I hope you don't get a lot of snow. oh yes the Sierras are really getting it and yosemite had over 100 mph winds which brought trees down on houses. Mother Nature is definitely getting irritated at California as am I.
