How to Tell Calli and Quill Apart

Quill on the left and Calli on the right.

Calli is petite and a dainty 7 pounds in weight. Quill is a big boy tipping the scale somewhere between 13 and 15 pounds.

Calli is a ghost appearing and disappearing without a sound. Quill moves like a tiger, our house tiger.

Calli is very vocal. Demands attention, but wants you to pet her with your eyes. Sometimes, she like to be held.

Quill isn't very vocal. He lets Calli do the talking for the both of them. For a large cat, he has a very, small meow unless  trying to get him into the carrier. Then he protests very loudly. He also mouths everything and can give love bites. He is missing all the teeth on his lower left jaw due to severe gingivitis when we first got him. Quill doesn't like to be picked up, but he does enjoy sitting near  and watching television or napping. Quill's fur is soft like angora and also long. He sheds like crazy.

Calli is all white She has no other markings. When she was a kitten she had a cute, little grey smudge on the top of her head. That faded away as she got older. If the light is right, you can see very, very faint, grey tabby markings. Her fur is very, very soft.

Quill has rust markings on the left side of his body, his ears and back of his head. He also has a rusty patch on his chin. He has a cat shape on his rump,  and

a ringed tail.

He has one marking on his left leg. It's shaped like a feather or a Quill because the naming convention was to name them after art/art supplies. Calli is short for calligraphy.

So that's how to tell Calli and Quill apart.

  1. I'm glad you wrote this post. I thought Calli was all white, but I wasn't certain. And really, they don't look alike, do they? Happy new week.

    1. No, they don't look alike. The rescuers weren't sure if they were true littermates. All they knew was the kittens were fostered together and traveled together from Alabama. I had their DNA tested to see if they were siblings, but they are not related. They were a bonded pair which is why we adopted both. Seemed cruel to separate them.

  3. I'm glad you didn't separate them. I'm sure they went through enough without having more trauma.

    1. Even now, three years later, they are still very skittish. Jump at all sorts of noises. That long ride from down South must have been hell.

  4. Such lovely cats and clearly very fond of each other. Our two are litter brothers and don't really like each other.

    1. Calli and Quill have their moments. Quill likes to play and is sometimes aggressive pouncing on her, biting her. Sometimes he's not phased by her loud growls or hisses, but for the most part, they get along

    1. They were close to the same size when we first got them, but then Quill had a huge growth spurt.

  6. I remember when you first got them and I asked if they came with the names Calli and Quill. So funny now, but an honest question at the time.

It was nice you adopted both together. They certainly seem to care for each other.

Talk about different. Bleubeard is social and outgoing. Squiggles, on the other hand, is MY cat and no one else ever knows he's around because he hides when someone comes in the office.

    1. Their given names from the rescue shelter were Angie and Joe. I have family member with those names so didn't want to have them for the kitties.
