After seeing the picture of the Turkish Van cat that looked like Quill and the fact that at a year and a half old he already weighs 13 pounds, I decided to see about having a DNA test done. I wanted to be assured he was just a big boy and not overeating. The rescue lady had said he was going to be a big boy.
A friend had her dog's DNA tested through Wisdom Panel and because of her experience, I decided to go with this company, too.
The Young One helped me wrestle the cats so we could collect saliva on a swab. The cats weren't happy about the experience though a treat afterwards helped.
The DNA results take 2 to 3 weeks and what a surprise.
Quill's Results
Western
12 % Norwegian Forest Cat. ( a big breed!)
Persian
7% British Shorthair (another big breed)
While Quill didn't have the Turkish Van breed in him, he did have the gene for the von coloring .
Calli's results were more surprising. The vet had said he thought she might have some exotic mix in her.
Western
52 % American Domestic Cat
11% Norwegian Forest Cat ( But she's so dainty!)
7% LaPerm (This makes me think of the WB cartoon cat that Pepe LePew's had a crush on. Les Mew, Les Purr)
4% Maine Coon (another large breed!)
2% European Domestic Cat
Persian
13% Persian
4% Scottish Fold
Siamese and Oriental
5% Oriental Longhair (This must be where she gets her voice. She's very vocal)
Asian
2% Khaomanee (This must be the exotic)
What their parents may have been.
Quill
Parent 1 American Domestic Cat
Parent 2 British Shorthair, Scottish Fold, European Domestic Cat, Norwegian Forest Cat
Calli
Parent 1 American Domestic Cat, La Perm Mix
Parent 2 American Domestic Cat, Persian, Norwegian Forest Cat.
So, they aren't litter mates, but were fostered together.
That's interesting! They have a lot of different DNA although they look quite similar!
ReplyDeleteThe diversity in their makeup helps lessen disease and illness from in-breeding
DeleteI'm not very familiar with cat breeds, but I find doing breed DNA tests fascinating. I did them on both of the dogs, and they both came out 40% lab, but their other 60% really makes them very different from each other, as they actually are. Maddie has fewer breeds, but her breeds very much explains her personality. Pete has a lot more breeds, but we were always curious about his body shape. Sometimes he looks lab like, but he has big ears and this big chest. Low and behold his second biggest breed is German Shorthair pointer, and that's what he has the body shape of. I bet you enjoyed doing the cats DNA as much. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun to read the personality types of the different breeds. Quill is very laid back and Calli is very much the prima donna.
DeleteSo interesting CJ!
