USPS Postage Stamp Increase

In case you haven't heard, the USPS will be increasing postage rates on July 10, 2022. First class postage will increase from 58 cents per ounce to 60 cents per ounce.

If you send a lot of holiday cards, you might want to stock up on stamps now before the rate increase.

    1. The Forever stamps are a great idea so you don't have to buy sheets of 1 fand 2 cent stamps every time there's an increase

  2. WOW! You'd think with all the price increases over the years they'd be showing a profit by now......hmmmm.... :-/

    1. USPS isn't a for profit business, but a service. Their funding doesn't come from taxpayers but from sales of stamps, delivery services. Package delivery has taken a big hit from Amazon, UPS, FedEx, DHL. The money the USPS takes in is supposed to cover their expenses: salaries, retirement, fleet maintenance, etc. With fuel costs going up, that and other expenses has to be passed on to the consumer. They could save some money, but it would mean mail wouldn't be delivered 6 days a week or closing some post offices especially in rural areas which would make it difficult for people in those areas to get mail on time. (Social Security checks). There was a big fuss about implementing cutbacks so we have to put up with postage increases.

  3. Good idea. Here it doesn't work - we have to pay the new postage whatever stamps we have. Hve a great week, Valerie

    1. It saves the post office from having to print penny or two cent stamps to make up the difference for first class postage increases.

  5. Honestly i think the postage stamp increases over the years have been modest and for me a snail mail lover well worth it.. Where it gets me is how much it cost to send a box or package.. sometimes more than the cost of whats in it...

    1. Yes, for first class mail, postage is relatively cheap especially compared to what other countries pay to send a domestic letter. I got sticker shock the other day when I mailed two small packages overseas.

  6. Everything is getting more expensive, sadly our salaries don´t rise. And they use any "excuse/explanation, yet get more money themselves (I bet).
    It´s always been this way...

    1. Yup, pure greed and we're the ones who foot the bill.

  7. Everything Scott has purchased for me from Amazon has come via USPS. I was surprised to see that they are part of the USPS problem you mentioned.

I used to complain about the high cost of postage, but I realize that I am quite lucky to have the potential for mail six days a week. I am saddened the rates have to increase, but I suspect part of the reason is in order to repurchase some of the equipment the Postmaster General DeJoy destroyed in order to delay mail during the election in 2020.

Not just social security checks, but small towns often get prescription drugs through the mail, too.

  8. I've been pleased to see the reforms Biden's enacting, though the price increases are never pleasant. Now, if he'd only get rid of trump-flunky DeJoy!

    1. Except Biden can't get rid of DeJoy. The postmaster general doesn't serve at the pleasure of the president. Otherwise, DeJoy would have been gone right after Biden was sworn in as president. There are federal laws that prevent Biden from getting rid of DeJoy. The postmaster general is appointed by a board of governors dominated by Trump appointees. Until the appointees terms run out and Biden can then fill those positions were stuck with the incompetent DeJoy
